Halifax Veterinary Hospital

Halifax Veterinary Hospital Your Other Family Doctor. The Halifax Veterinary Hospital is an accredited member of the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA).

In 1939, the Halifax Veterinary Hospital opened its doors and became the first established Animal Hospital Practice in the Halifax area. Dr. Ross Ainslie acquired the hospital in 1953, and has since been committed to offering excellence in animal health care, promoting responsible pet ownership and health-related educational opportunities for our clients. The Halifax Veterinary Hospital is one of

three (see also the Fairview Animal Hospital and the Spryfield Animal Hospital) that are owned by the Halifax Veterinary Hospital Inc. Conveniently located within the city of Halifax, our health care team offers collectively over 95 years of experience with extensive and ongoing training in all aspects of Veterinary medicine. Since 1996, we have regularly undergone evaluations by AAHA to ensure that we comply with the association’s high quality standards of care. These standards cover nearly every aspect of our hospital, including surgery, pharmacy, laboratory, exam facilities, patient care, cleanliness, client service, emergency services, diagnostic imaging, and anesthesiology. The AAHA accreditation process is rigorous and exact and only about 7 percent of Animal Hospitals in North America receive this highly valued accreditation. The professional and courteous health care team at the Halifax Veterinary Hospital provide the best possible medical, surgical and dental care for our highly-regarded patients. While we are experts in our field dedicated to giving our best every day, we are also pet owners who understand your desire to give your pets the best care. We treat all of our patients as if they were our own pets. Please take a moment to contact us today, to learn more about how our veterinary practice can serve the needs of you and your cherished pet. We look forward to being Your Other Family Doctor.

Bunny would like to make a public service announcement. She urges pet parents to continue with their tick prevention for their fur babies. Her flea/ tick medication had lapsed and her mum found a large engorged tick on her ear today! Her doctors also want to add that they have been treating a few cases of Lyme nephritis. These ticks mean business!

Did you know that you can extend the life and well-being of your cat if you get them started on a kidney-safe diet as soon as possible? We can catch kidney disease at Stage I and Stage II through bloodwork and intervene before it is life-threatening. Kidney disease is one reason why annual/biannual exams and yearly bloodwork is important for senior kitties 🐱

Did you know that Great Danes are considered senior at 5 years of age? Other breeds are considered senior between 6 and 9 years of age depending on breed. A lot can change in the golden years of your dog's life.

A typical senior appointment for dogs involves collecting a thorough history - Any weight loss? Are they drinking more? Any stiffness or lameness? Any changes in their behavior? Any coughing? Any lumps or bumps? Your veterinarian then performs a full physical exam from teeth to tail! Your veterinarian will likely discuss wellness bloodwork as early diagnosis of common older dog problems is key to having them life a happy, healthy life. Your veterinarian will also assess their diet and make recommendations based on their health, skin and coat, weight and mobility.

This week is Practice Manager Week! We wish to give a shout-out to our manager, Tara! If you’re visiting for an appointment, you likely won’t see Tara as she works behind the scenes, making sure the hospital runs as smooth as possible!

Tara has been hard at work for the past few months, prepping for our practice software update. She also deals with all of the administrative tasks, is a mediator, a problem-solver, a listener and makes clinic-life fun! She is a veterinary assistant with lots of experience in veterinary medicine and a devoted dog and cat owner.

If you happen to catch a glimpse of Tara, join us in thanking her!

This is an x-ray taken of 15 year old staff cat Maddie. Maddie has been on pet insurance for 11 years! Aside from dental problems, Maddie was in good health until 2022 - it was then she was diagnosed with osteoarthritis. Shortly after, she was diagnosed with insulin-resistant diabetes caused by a tumor.

Many folks are reluctant to get pet insurance for a young, healthy animal. As they get older, they can develop painful, chronic conditions, such as osteoarthritis pictured here as bony growths on the knee. Most animals develop osteoarthritis when they age. Pet insurance will help cover the costs of pain management for this disease!

Up until 2022, paying into pet insurance every month felt pointless. The last few years, insurance has covered thousands of dollars to help keep Maddie comfortable and her diabetes managed in her golden years.

Did you know that cats are considered to be seniors around 7 to 8 years of age?

Every year that a senior cat doesn't see their veterinarian is equivalent to a person not seeing their doctor in 7 years. A lot can change when you're a senior... and a lot can change in the golden years of your cat's life.

A typical senior appointment for cats involves collecting a thorough history - Any weight loss? Are they drinking more? Any difficulties jumping up on things or moving around? Your veterinarian then performs a full physical exam from teeth to tail! Your veterinarian will likely discuss wellness bloodwork - cats are great at hiding underlying illness and early diagnosis of common older cat problems is key to having them life a happy, healthy life. Your veterinarian will also assess their diet and make recommendations based on their health, skin and coat, weight and mobility.

November is Senior Pet Month 🐾 It is never too late to book their appointment.
