In 2019 Common Roots Urban Farm moved to BiHi Park at bottom of Bayers Road and joined MetroWorks, an organization committed to supporting people in overcome obstacles and realize their employment and educational goals. Common Roots Urban Farm is a hybrid garden. More than just a community garden, the farm includes a market garden, community plots, spots to sit and relax. In the coming years we hope to expand, growing community farms in every district.
Our History:
For seven years, Common Roots grew at the corner of Bell Rd. and Robie St., where Queen Elizabeth High School used to be located. This location was an interim land use through Partners for Care, a registered charity that supports the patients of Capital Health and came to an end in 2018.
This site grew 200 community garden plots, a productive veggie and flower farm, common gardens, a food forest, a therapeutic garden and a childrenβs garden with programming involving school groups, individuals, businesses, community organization and newcomers to Nova Scotia and inspired many in showing the community, food and landscapes we can grow together. Our goal was, and continues to be, to contribute to a Nova Scotia that is able to boast socially and ecologically productive landscapes. We plan to achieve this through increasing our food production and our ability to prepare healthy food. By granting citizens access to restorative landscapes such as CRUF, we hope to further promote health and wellness within HRM. CRUF quickly became known as a unique and productive green space where all of our citizens are welcome. Members of the community can participate and contribute to the garden on a casual or dedicated basis, and we are committed to the benefits we can provide for under-serviced areas within HRM. We welcome all to come and share their knowledge, ideas and opinions.
