We touched base on recall, stay, no jumping and lay down.

It's HOT! And that means Fido may be spending a lot of time in the water. But do you know about the dangers of water toxicity?

Water toxicity happens when a dog just doesn't know when to call it quits. Water play - fetch in the lake, biting the spraying hose, lots of swimming- can result in the accidental ingestion of too much water. And although lots of water on a hot summer day can seem like a good thing, the problem of toxicity arises when the dog simply swallows far more than they should, leading to a severe imbalance of electrolytes.

What you might see : changes in personality, "drunken" behaviour, wobbly gait, collapse. Often a dog will continue to play even as these symptoms are emerging, so it's important to know when to tell Fido that he's had enough.

This is a condition that can lead to death if not treated promptly. If your dog has been playing excessively with water and is displaying any of the signs of water toxicity it is necessary to seek immediate veterinary care.

So in summary : a moderate amount of water play...great! Fun! But like a lot of things in life, there is sometimes too much of a good thing. Know when enough is enough and play again another day :)
