Checking Your Pet for Ticks
Bites can often be difficult to detect. Transmission of the bacterium from the attached infected tick takes 36 - 48 hours, therefore it is important to check your pets for ticks every day, especially after they have spent time outdoors. Ticks can almost be too small to see when they first attach themselves to your pets, so check carefully. Signs of tick-borne disease may not be apparent until 7-21 days after a tick bite.
Both dogs and cats are at risk of getting ticks, so it is important to check your outdoor cats just as much as dogs.
This list from the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) outlines the process of checking your pet for ticks:
Run your fingers through your pet’s fur with gentle pressure to feel for any small bumps. Looks for ticks in the following areas:
In and around the ears
Around the eyelids
Under the collar
Under the front legs
Between the back legs
Between the toes
Around the tail
Removing a tick as soon as you spot it can reduce the chances of disease transmission.
The easiest and safest way to remove a tick is by grasping it as close as possible to the skin with fine-tipped tweezers and pulling it straight out, without squeezing the body.
NEVER try to burn a tick with a match or a candle, or cover it with petroleum jelly, nail polish, perfume or alcohol—all potentially dangerous things to do.
Call your vet if you need help
Oh yeah! That's the spot!

Look, I can use my ears to fly!
We often get asked why dogs are on two leashes during sniffy walks. We do this for every dog as we always want to ensure safety comes 1st!
The first leash is attached to a hands free waist leash. This ensures that even the walker slips during the walk or the dog pulls harder than expected they are still safety attached to us as there is a hands free component.
The second leash is a slip lead. This leash is important for any of those sneaky pups that like to try and slip their collars off.
You never know what adventures you will find on a sniffy walk!

This is why proper brushing techniques are so important! Hair can be very tricky, in this video the hair initially looks like it is brushed out. When I part the hair, however, you can not see down to the skin. A further reveal shows the coat is actually very impacted and matted at the base of the hair, close to the skin. A matted coat such as this causes pain every time the dog moves as the skin is restrained by the matt and pulled by the dog's movement. Furthermore, a matted coat is like packed down insulation in a home and does not provide the protection of a properly maintained coat. Unfortunately this can be a common occurrence. Even if you are frequently brushing your pup using the wrong technique, wrong brush or not brushing down to the base of the hair means they can still be very tangled. Unfortunately, once a dog is this matted, often, the only humane option is shaving the coat. This is something that we always try to avoid however it may be in the best interest of a badly matted dog as brushing out at this stage can cause too much pain. We are firm believers in humanity before vanity and putting the dog's welfare first. When brushing it's very important to be parting the hair and carefully brushing to the skin to ensure the entire length of coat is being brushed out, not just the top layer. Do you need help with your pups coat? Reach out! We are always very happy to help with brush recommendations as well as demonstrating the proper brushing techniques.
