Read on: βThe reality of a career as a positive reinforcement dog trainer is widely misunderstood. I think itβs important to talk about the emotional and mental load we carry and how societal expectations are impacting not only case outcomes, but the well-being of trainers everywhere.
Our field is unregulated. We fight against ingrained myths that exacerbate behavior problems and client expectations that training can βfixβ a dog, βsaveβ a dog, or that there is any guarantee of an outcome.
The insatiable desire for instant gratification is a constant battle we fight. The fact that dogs are living, sentient beings who ultimately deserve, desire, and need autonomy and authority over themselves to be behaviorally healthy, safe, and function in a human world is a premise that most struggle to truly grasp.
But when youβre a positive reinforcement dog trainer and you understand canine ethology, learning theory, and behavior change principles, your eyes are opened to the blindness of society forever.
You can do everything right, equip people with the knowledge, skills, guidance, support, and resources they need to be successful with their dogs and still lose.
It still wonβt always be enough.
You canβt save or fix or help them all. You have to be willing to endure the darkest of days, over and over and over again, just for the opportunity to continue to be light for the ones who are open and willing to receive it β¨
Yes, we have the best job in the world. But also yes, that job sometimes includes spending your lunch break crying and breathing and recentering so you can put on a strong face and continue to do the work your heart desires. β
Two years in the making. π½πΆ
Integration of another animal into the home doesn't always go as you dreamed. Dill and Fennel have not had any animosity towards each other, but they aren't the dog and cat couple either.
In our new home, they have started to share this window. Squirrels and birds abound, and it just warms my heart to see them enjoying themselves close to each other.
Relaxing outside can be challenging for dogs that are... let's call them "nature enthusiasts" πΏππ
To help them, we can pair "relaxing" with a target (a towel or a mat). Start inside, randomly tossing fairly low value treats on the target while you watch TV or do some desk work. Your dog will start to hang out there more frequently, and for longer periods of time, and VERY LIKELY, start to relax while waiting. The more you do this, the more that target becomes a cue to "relax".
Then, the magic! We bring that target outside and again randomly toss treats. Quickly your dog will figure out that they can chill outside just as much as they can inside.
It can also be helpful to pair outside relaxing time with a long lasting chewable/lickable treat, which is a naturally calming activity.

If you burn, your dog burns. π₯π₯π₯ I know first hand how draining being the guardian and main caretaker of a reactive/anxious dog can be. There are a lot of emotional ups and downs that come with dogs that struggle to live within human society. There are tears, panic attacks, doubts, anger, despair... too much to carry for the lifetime of that animal. When we reach the limits of our emotional bucket (and sometimes physical bucket too), we can no longer take care of ourselves, which means we can no longer provide the care our animal needs. So here is your reminder: TAKE BREAKS FROM TRAINING YOUR DOG! It IS possible. You may need to do some preparatory work before being able to take a break, but its not only worth it, but necessary for success in the long term. Find friends, family, and/or trusted professionals that can take the weight for a few hours, or a day or two. Maybe just relax your expectations for that day; go back to avoidance/management of the issue rather than training. Nail trims don't gave to be stressful for your pup! With cooperative care, your dog can participate actively and enjoy the process. Here's 3 quick tips you can start with now! 1οΈβ£ Take it slow! π Start with gentle touches on the least sensitive spot, and gradually move towards the paw pads and nails. 2οΈβ£ Use lots of treats! π§π₯ Make nail trim time special. You'll get an eager participant. 3οΈβ£ Respect signals to stop π. The majority of aggression that occurs during grooming and handling happens because we pushed past what our dog is comfortable with. Imagine you're at the dentist, and when you raised your hand to say stop, they responded by pinning you down and saying "you need to get used to this". π± No thank you!
