The people have spoken & educational posts was the most popular request! So here goes…

Why I don’t like daily neighbourhood walks, & what I do with my dogs instead!

Let’s jump into it. I’m not a big fan of neighbourhood walks as a daily, & only form of exercise & mental stimulation for your dog. Put yourself into your dogs shoes for a minute.

Imagine your only source of outside stimulation, is your backyard & the 30 minute walk around your neighbourhood that your dog gets. Otherwise you were restricted to your house 24/7. Not only would it be boring, but you’d likely start to experience a decline in mental health.

So what are some fun & stimulating ways to keep things fun for your dog?

1. Train your dog! Go to the park, or off to the side of a local store entrance & work on building duration in some of your dogs known commands.
2. Go for hike 😍 this is my favourite option! This is physically great for both you & your dog. It also is a great option to practice recalls, as well as generalizing known commands; all while simultaneously giving your dog biological fulfillment.
3. Trail walks! This is a great alternative for those who want to give their dogs a bit “more” but may not able to accommodate a hike. Most major cities have a trail system.
4. Training for a dog sport! There are many different types of dog sports out there, & training for the precise & engagement of them can be much more stimulating for your dog’s natural instincts, than a walk around the block.
5. Trick training — Did you know there is an online platform for training your dog & earning trick titles with them? Why not learn some new ways to engage with your dog, while stimulating their 🧠 !

💡Helpful tips!

I use the app “alltrails” to find new hiking & walking trails.

✨Please✨ leave a message!!

I have gotten a lot of calls after business hours. Unless you leave a message, I don’t know whether to take your call seriously, or not.

We do prefer if you text us, to set up a phone call, as we are often busy with training clients, & their dogs! Thank you for understanding 💕

Emotion: They cause injury! They are barbaric! No dog should ever wear one!

Facts: A good quality prong, is the most ergonomic choice on the market. The alternating direction of the prongs, creates equal pressure around the neck, & does not cause torsion when there is pressure applied on the leash. The prongs are rounded & smoothed, to ensure they do not cause any skin irritation. Due to many points of contact, the amount of force required to offer leash communication, is far less than with any other collar type. Every dog can benefit from the clear communication the prong offers.

When we look at popular walking tools, we often see discrimination towards the prong. This is due to a lack of education & understanding, of how tools work, how to properly apply them, & what happens when you do apply them.

Let’s look at some popular tools, & discuss why we don’t recommend them, unless your dog has a full understanding of leash pressure.

Are you making these mistakes? Here’s what we recommend!:

1. When we allow our dogs to pull us along & sniff every little thing, it does nothing to mentally stimulate the dog. You are just creating a fit as***le. That doesn’t mean your dog can never sniff, just that it should not be the sole activity of the walk.

2. This is where structure comes in — having a heel command & teaching your dog how to walk properly on a loose leash, are essential for a stimulating walk. Have an auto sit & hold your dog accountable for it at every stop/road crossing.

3. When we are consistent, & hold our dogs accountable, it helps them continue to think & check in with the handler, versus aimlessly pulling along & completely checking out.

4. If you allow your expectations of your dogs obedience to waiver when it comes to tasks like (un)locking the door, moving through thresholds, & taking off your shoes, you are immediately setting tone for what is allowed at home. Have your dog sit calmly while you (un)lock the door & open it, take off your shoes, etc — even if takes 20 minutes.

5. After having your dog calmly go through the motions of coming home — don’t immediately throw the leash off & give full freedom. Instead, use this time to do a short place session, & help your dog understand your home is a place of a calm, not chaos.

Meet Xena!

Xena is my 2 year old Siberian Husky 🐾

She is extremely biddable, & loves to work.

Xena absolutely adores human interaction. She loves a good pet. She has always been great with kids & loves to interact with them.

Her favourite pass time is anything that involves water — a surprising trait for a husky. In the summer, she loves getting into any body of water, & if we’re home, a kiddy pool with water will suffice. It’s no surprise — she loves the snow!

Meet Gump!

Gump is my 4 year old Doberman Pinscher. He is from an excellent ethical breeder 💕🐾

Gump is my IGP/schutzhund prospect. He came to me at 18 months of age due to needing a stronger handler. He proved to himself very quickly, & become a great family pet, outside of sports work. I’ve never met such an agile dog around kids. It blows my mind, how such a big dog will skillfully manoeuvre around running children, to avoid a spill. He’s truly a once in a lifetime dog 💕

Meet Nova! (If you haven’t already lol)

This sassy little pocket rocket often joins me as a demo or distraction dog. If you’ve worked with me, you’ve probably met her.

Nova can take a second to warm up. Good luck once she does - she will act starved for affection. You will constantly hear me say - she’d climb inside my soul if she could.

She’s always ready to give 1000% & is the happiest girl you could meet!

Nova came home as a 7 week old puppy & is approaching her 4th Birthday 😊💕

Meet Coral!

Coral was my second ever foster, & I adopted her within 3 days of her coming to me. She was a wild young girl dog, with all the love to give. She was found as a stray wondering the woods — which you would never guess as she has perfect off leash recall. If you swipe to see her results, this is truly a feat.

Every trainer has their reason, & Coral is mine. When I got her she had zero training & was roughly 10 months old. She was going to break someone’s nose with her energy! I sought out local training classes, which eventually snowballed my interest into an apprenticeship. The rest is history 😊

Coral makes an excellent demo dog with her ability to be truly neutral to every dog she meets. She makes an excellent family pet, & truly enjoys her time around children (she can be caught squeezing in to sleep with them on the couch 😂🩷). Coral is also an excellent hiking partner as she is able to explore while staying close & recalls immediately when people/dogs/wildlife etc are around.

My perfect Heinz 57 💕

Meet Shadow!

He is one of my personal dogs. He is now 11 years old, & has been with me for the last 9 years! He was originally adopted from the 😊

He was an owner surrender & listed as a Beagle x GSD. Shadow did not have any training prior to adoption, & he marked in the house. This was prior to me becoming a dog trainer, & I was still able to nip the marking within 2 weeks!

All these years later, he is able to live life to the fullest as he is fully off leash trained 😊💕

It’s been a while, so for those who don’t know me personally, let me re-introduce myself!

My name is Sam, & I am the sole founder/owner/trainer at Operant K9 Training Inc!

I am a 33 year old Mom to 3 boys aged 4-12, & I have 5 personal dogs.

I was a hairstylist for almost 9 years, before I had a career ending accident. I now have permanent joint & nerve damage in my left hand.

I already had Shadow at this time, & started fostering, while I did some soul searching. I ended up getting a young hound mix that I fell in love with, & that’s how I got Coral!

She was an absolute menace to society, & was going to break someone’s nose, with her version of love. This prompted me to start absorbing any & all online information I could on dog training.

I got hungry for knowledge & started taking obedience classes with a local trainer. The obsession snowballed, & I started to look for an apprenticeship.

I found an apprenticeship & committed to it. I quickly worked my way to a kennel manager position. As this business grew, I decided I wanted more freedom, to spend time with my own dogs & my kids, so I branched out to training on my own!

Through pet training, I found the sport of IGP/Schutzhund which I train for with my Doberman, Gump.

My Malinois, Nova has also been trained with foundations for the sport. Shadow my Beagle mix, Coral my Coonhound mix, & Xena my Siberian Husky are all family pets. All 5 dogs are trained for off leash adventures!

Outside of dogs, I enjoy reading, gardening, self-care, & hiking.

Now you know a bit about me & my dogs, let’s hear a bit about you & your dogs! ⬇️
