Learned anxiety occurs when a dog does not live a structured, fulfilled life, resulting in an anxious state of mind.
Listed below are a few common signs of anxiety in dogs.
Excessive ➡️ panting, pacing, licking, drooling, barking & whining can all be signs of anxiety. Reactivity to humans, & other animals can also be an indication of anxiety.
Anxious behaviours seen in dogs, are often due to a lack of ✨consistency✨ in handling. Dogs having too much freedom, & owners who humanize their dogs 👀
Dogs thrive best off of confident, calm leadership, as well as consistency, & structure.
When we look at dogs that start acting anxious as adults, (who haven’t had traumatic experiences, & aren’t genetically inclined) it is often times due to a lack of boundaries, & clarity in handling.
If you create a clear communication system with your dog, & implement structure & boundaries, there is a high probability, you will see anxious behaviours diminish.
Imagine this; you land on an island. You don’t speak the local language, you don’t have a map, & you have no clue about the local culture. You would likely feel anxious with all the unknowns.
Now, imagine if someone took the time, to teach you a method of communication, to guide you around, & taught you how to behave, to fit in with the local culture. You’d feel a lot more relaxed, no?
With that in mind — go train your dog! 🐶

Education & Training around the neighbourhood were popular choices when it came to my poll the other day. Here is Miss Milly on a training walk!
A couple of things I do that help make a walk go smoothly!:
1) I have a cue for stops & turns. This helps the dog know there is a change coming & to pay closer attention to speed/direction.
2) I praise in a low tone voice for duration. This will help keep excitement levels down, while reinforcing the behaviour I like.
3) I use an excitement & a high pitch voice when I want speed in a command. This helps engage the dog, & create good emotion towards the action we are doing. This is particularly important for recalls!
4) I am confident in what I am asking. This may sound silly, but subconsciously believing in yourself, will exude confidence externally. If I believe the only option for my dog, is to do what I am asking, my tone & body language will portray this.
5) I am black & white in my handling. This makes expectations very clear to the dog. Dogs are not good at grey areas, or generalizing. It’s important we make things very clear, & to generalize behaviours in all environments.
