Can you guess the condition?

If you guessed GDV you would be correct

GDV (gastric dilation volvulus) is a condition where the stomach of a dog twists.

Dogs at high risk of GDV are large, deep chested dogs such as great danes, german shepherds and mastiffs. Medium sized dogs can also be affected.

If left untreated, it can be fatal within hours.

Having a gastropexy performed at they time of spay or neuter surgery should be considered with larger breed dogs. This is a surgical procedure that involves attaching the stomach to the abdominal wall to prevent GDV from occurring.

Other precautions that can be taken are:
-Feeding smaller meals throughout the day rather than one large one
-Slow eating
-Exercising your dog (running, walks, swimming etc) several hours after they have eaten
-Combining kibble with wet food
-Managing anxiety or fear (staying calm)

If you have questions about preventative gastropexy, our doctors would be happy to have you in for a consultation.

We can be reached at (905) 521-9404 to schedule an appointment

Be cautious of the plants you bring into your home

as beautiful as they can be, not all plants are safe around pets. Plant toxicity can cause issues ranging from digestive upset, to seizures and in some cases, death.

some of the more common plants that are toxic to pets include but are not limited to:

Lilies - Peace and calla lilies contain insoluble oxalate crystals that cause minor signs, such as tissue irritation to the mouth, tongue, pharynx, and esophagus – this results in minor drooling. The more dangerous, potentially fatal lilies are true lilies, and these include tiger, day, Asiatic, Easter and rose lilies – all of which are highly toxic to cats! Even small ingestions (such as 2-3 petals or leaves) can result in severe kidney failure.

Autumn Crocus - can cause severe vomiting, gastrointestinal bleeding, liver and kidney damage, and respiratory failure.

Azalea - Can cause vomiting, diarrhea and excessive drooling. Large ingestions may result in more serious signs including heart rate and rhythm abnormalities and neurologic abnormalities.

Cyclamen - If ingested, can cause severe vomiting.

Kalanchoe - can cause vomiting, diarrhea and heart arrhythmias.

Oleander - can cause severe vomiting, slow the heart rate and possibly even cause death.

Dieffenbachia -can cause intense oral irritation, drooling, nausea, vomiting and difficulty swallowing.

Daffodils- can cause severe vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and even possible cardiac arrhythmias or respiratory depression.

Lily of the Valley can cause vomiting, diarrhea, a drop in heart rate, severe cardiac arrhythmias, and possibly seizures.

Sago Palm- can cause vomiting, bloody stools, damage to the stomach lining, severe liver failure and, in some cases, death.

Tulips and Hyacinths - can result in tissue irritation to the mouth and esophagus, vomiting, or even diarrhea, depending on the amount consumed. as well as more severe symptoms such as an increase in heart rate and changes in respiration.

Should your pet be on flea and tick prevention all year round?
With the colder temperatures and winter coming, many people opt to take their pets off of prevention until the spring.
While fleas and ticks may not be as prevalent during the winter months, they are quite resilient and still pose a risk to our pets.

Did you know it only has to be 4 degrees celcius for ticks to be active and feeding? With the milder winters we have been having, ticks will be out at least a few days EVERY month!

Ticks carry a variety of diseases including Lyme disease and fleas are very uncomfortable for your pets and for you. Keeping your pet on prevention all year is a safe and effective method to ensure they are not affected by these pests.

Call us at (905) 521-9404 to pick up your preventions....

With Rabies in the news recently, now is a good time to check that your dogs & cats vaccines are up to date. Rabies can be spread in a number of ways; is transmissible between animals and people; and is almost always fatal.

Bats are a common carrier of Rabies and contact with them should be avoided. If you are interested in learning more about bats and Rabies exposure, Dr. Scott Weese of the Ontario Veterinary College has posted a very informative article on this topic on the Worms and Germs blog.

Fall is an important time for parasite protection. We see flea infestations peak in the fall and blacklegged (deer) ticks are out looking for a host when its 4° C and above, no matter the season. In Southwestern Ontario, October and November are high risk months to encounter blacklegged ticks. Blacklegged ticks can transmit the bacteria that causes Lyme disease and Anaplasmosis to you and your pet. Let’s keep your pet protected from ticks and the diseases they can carry.

AT DOWNTOWN ANIMAL HOSPITAL WE HAVE HAD 12 DOGS TEST POSITIVE FOR LYME DISEASE AND 5 DOG TEST POSITIVE FOR ANAPLASMOSIS IN 2024.

Your pet may be due to receive their next dose of Flea & Tick protection.
If you need additional doses, or if you have any questions, please call us at 905-521-9404!
