Welcome to The Cat Clinic
Owned by one of the few board certified feline veterinary specialist in Ontario, The Cat Clinic is a full functioning animal hospital in Hamilton specifically for feline patients. Established in 1978, the veterinarians and staff at The Cat Clinic understand the special bond you share with your cat and we strive for compassionate high quality care. We've been around a lon

g time and our whole team is dedicated to staying up to date on current knowledge and techniques in feline medicine. At our hospital we encourage client participation in the decision making process and treat every patient as an individual with dignity and compassion, as if they were our own. Our hospital is equipped to provide your pet with routine medical care which includes Physical examination, laser therapy, digital radiography, ultrasound, dentistry and surgery as well as many other important services and emergency care should the need arise. Please feel free to visit the services section of our website for a more detailed listing. We are active in both community and national charity work supporting cats and their needs. Dr. O'Brien has volunteered her time to go all over the country championing Cat Healthy by creating awareness of responsible cat ownership. Locally we are the founders of the street cat program, this project partners with the hbspca to run a spay/neuter trap and release program for the local feral cats. This helps to control the feline populations, promotes keeping healthier cats and decreases fighting. We often have strays we have “cleaned up” that are in our hospital looking for a new home as well as providing care for several rescues. We also work with The Living Rock, an organization helping “youth at risk” by providing routine veterinary care for their pets. The Cat Clinic welcomes new clients, emergencies, second opinions, transfers and of course our regular clients.

Dealing With Pet Grief
It is always a sad day when you have to make the decision to euthanize (put to sleep) your furry friend. The relationship we have with our pets is unique. We get unconditional love and affection from our animals along with a variety of shenanigans. It is not an easy decision to make, and picking the optimal moment is hard, really hard. People who do not have pets often do not understand the extent of grief related to the passing of an animal.

As the temperature rises with the onset of summer in the Northern Hemisphere, this is a good time to review a few heat safety recommendations to keep your feline friends safe and comfortable.

The following are some guidelines for addressing this important issue. As always, your veterinarian is your best source of guidance if you have any questions or concerns about these recommendations or the well-being of your cat.

1) Help to maintain hydration by assuring that fresh water is available at all times. Providing a running water source like a fountain may encourage some cats to drink more. Make sure that water is always available both indoors and outdoors for those cats that are allowed outside.

2) Provide shaded areas for cats that are allowed outside. These may take the form of tress, umbrellas, sun sails, and/or indoor places to which a cat has access.

3) Provide ice cubes for your cat to play with and cool down while doing so.

4) Use cooling mats (available for purchase online and through other outlets). You can also make a cool space for cats to hang out in by wrapping ice packs in blankets.

5) Keep cats indoors (if possible) in air-conditioned areas when extreme heat is forecast.

6) Check sheds, garages, greenhouses, barns, and other outbuildings to make sure there are no places in which cats can become trapped.

7) Use pet-safe sunscreen on the ear tips and nose of cats with light colored fur to help prevent skin cancer.

8) Know the signs of heat stroke, which can become life-threatening very quickly. These include:
a. Weakness/collapse
b. Excessive panting
c. Drooling
d. Vomiting
e. Diarrhea

If you notice any of these, immediately place your cat in a cool area with a draft, gently wet her fur with cool (not very cold) water, and contact your veterinarian immediately.

Taking these easy steps and knowing what to watch out for can help assure that your cat is comfortable and safe during times of extreme heat.

Stay cool out there!

Losing a pet is a hard thing for anyone to go through. Grief is a very personal thing and people will react differently. Recognising this will help you manage, or support someone else, through this difficult time. It is important to take care and accept the need to mourn. Doing something special to honour the memory of your companion can help the grieving process. ❤️ 🐈

If you or someone you know is struggling, please reach out for help. Your veterinary practice or doctor’s surgery should also be able to provide you with some information.

As a predator, being digitigrade helps cats approach their prey silently. Since cats are prey themselves, speed is also critical. I find it funny though that as silent as cats can be, they also have the ability to sound like horses galloping down a hallway in the middle of the night when you're trying to sleep.

Easy access to key resources helps prevent conflict in multi-cat households 🐈‍⬛🐈‍⬛. This includes food and water bowls, litter trays, scratching surfaces, resting areas, and playtime/toys:

😺Food - Cats are lone feeders, so it’s best to prepare food and feed cats out of sight of each other to prevent competition over food. Try offering food separately and in their usual place if your cats are fed together or ad-lib.

😺Water - Offer several water stations on each level of your home. One water station per cat, plus a spare is advised. Keep water bowls filled to the top and place them away from corners so your cats can access them from 360° and feel safe when they drink.

😺Litter trays - A minimum of one tray per cat plus a spare is advised. Spread trays out in quiet locations throughout your home. Some cats will ambush each other when hooded trays are used, so try offering open trays too. Scoop each tray out twice daily, and empty them every 1-2 weeks. Cats prefer to urinate and defecate in different areas and don’t like using soiled trays, so good litter tray hygiene is essential in multi-cat households.

😺Resting areas - Elevated resting/perching areas are good as these allow cats to observe their surroundings and sleep from a place of safety. Enclosed beds can provide an additional sense of security, just remember to offer beds with more than one entry/exit point in multi-cat households (to enable easy escape).

😺 Scratching surfaces - All cats need to scratch! Offer one scratching surface plus a spare in different areas of the home. Place scratching surfaces near where your cats sleep (so they can stretch and scratch after resting) and on the edge of their territory i.e. near doors/stairs to encourage use. Each cat will have their scratching preference, so you may need to try different surfaces/designs to establish what they like.

😺Playtime - Playing mimics hunting behaviours, so it’s best to play with each cat individually as cats are solitary hunters. Wand toys are great for interactive play. Scheduling regular playtimes can help reduce anxiety or boredom, which is good for all cats, but especially important for indoor-only cats or those living in multi-cat households.

*Avoid getting another cat if there is already conflict between the cats in your home. Contact your vet if you are worried about your cat's behaviour. Referal to a clinical animal behaviourist who specialises in cats may be beneficial. ❤️🐈‍⬛

There are behaviors your cat displays that you may not like, such as furniture scratching. Instead of viewing this as a destructive behavior and getting mad at your cat, redirect the behavior to a more appropriate object such as a claw-appealing scratching post. Remember, every behavior serves a purpose, even the behaviors you don't like. Identify what the cat gets from the behavior so you can create a better solution.
