This is a heartworm larva in a dog’s blood - a great start to our day 🙁
This dog was a rescue brought in from Texas. Initial heartworm tests (2) were negative. It can take up to 9 months for a dog infected with heartworm to have a positive result on a test. These dogs must be retested to make sure they aren’t incubating heartworm on their arrival as this girl was. She has started treatment and we hope she does well. Unfortunately she had been here for over a year before we discovered this.
Lyme Season is officially open - our first clinical case of 2023. I think our pets should be on tick prevention year round. 😞🪳
