PET SAFETY REMINDER: Remember that asphalt (and concrete) gets HOT during the summer and can cause burns to pets’ feet. On a 77-degree day asphalt temps have measured as high as 125 degrees – and on an 87-degree day as high as 143 degrees (it’s already 88 today in central Iowa and temps are climbing, so even more dangerous)! Skin destruction can occur in as little as 1 minute on a 125-degree surface. To keep your pet safe, press the back of your hand firmly against the asphalt (or concrete) for 7 seconds before walking your dog on it. If it’s not comfortable for you, it could potentially harm your pup. Even better, walk your dog in the grass to not even risk paw damage.

🌠The more you know:

Dental diseases in dogs are quite common. By age 3, over 80% of dogs have some form of dental disease (a.k.a. periodontal disease)…This can cause serious consequences, affecting the teeth, gums and structures that support and surround a dog’s teeth.

Maintaining good dog dental care is very important in preventing:
tooth loss
bad breath (halitosis)
oral pain and discomfort
worsening dental disease
organ damage

The culprit: Tartar

Plaque that stays on the teeth hardens into tartar. Tartar below the gumline causes inflammation and not only damages the structures supporting the teeth but also causes infection. When dental disease reaches this stage, dogs can experience serious dental problems and pain.

Signs of dental disease in dogs include:
Broken teeth
Loose teeth
Bad breath
Painful and bleeding mouth
Refusal or inability to eat and drink
Drooling

I want to thank you all for your show of love and support during my Dad's journey. Your expressed compassion and kind words really helped to give me the strength to provide him with the support he needed and deserved during his final days. Dad was an amazing story teller and while it took me a week to be able to face writing his obituary, I couldn't share our final good bye without sharing a look into this amazing man ... thank you all so very much!
