Anyone tired of the up-and-down weather patterns we’ve been having for the past couple of months? 🌦 Have you been noticing an increase in the amount of pneumonia, scours, and feet issues recently in your animals? 🤒 Well, you are not alone. With the recent variation in weather, the clinic has also been noticing an uptick in the issues mentioned above. We thought it would be a great time to briefly discuss why this happens and what you can do to prevent these issues from happening in your animals.

Enemy #1: Temperature swings 🌡
Livestock species do not like dramatic changes in weather, just like us. When this happens, it puts the animal in a “stressful” position and can weaken the immune system.
Pneumonia is a great example of this process. Most respiratory pathogens that cause disease normally live in the upper respiratory tract but are kept in-check by the animal’s immune system. If the immune system becomes weakened in any way, those normal pathogens are able to become rogue and cause respiratory disease. 🤧

Enemy #2: Moisture 💧
When the weather suddenly becomes mild and damp, there is added moisture that can decrease air quality and create wet, muddy, mucky conditions. You may be noticing on your farm that pens, barns, and animals are becoming dirtier more frequently and quickly. These conditions make it very easy for bacteria and viruses to spread from animal to animal. Many pathogens also THRIVE in these damp conditions and can replicate quickly and in large volumes. Increased pathogen load = increased chance of an animal getting infected with enough pathogen to become sick. 🦠

Since we can’t control the weather unfortunately, here are some things that you can do to be proactive and prevent your animals from becoming sick:
☀️ Provide good ventilation – having good, fresh air flow in your barn keeps the humidity down and prevents pathogens from lingering.
☀️ Maintain clean, dry bedding – although this can seem like a lot more work in damp conditions, this can have a HUGE impact on disease reduction in a herd/flock.
☀️ Vaccinating cattle – making sure your cattle are up-to-date on vaccinations for core respiratory pathogens can help reduce disease incidence and severity.
☀️ Providing adequate shelter – for animals with outside access, having a space to protect them from the outside weather and muddy areas can minimize stress and pathogen load.

Great advice. Calf care!

Great advice. Calf care!

December is finally upon us and it’s been a cold and snowy start for most places! It’s time to dust off those winter coats not only for ourselves, but for our calves too! 🥶

This week, our team and some of our producers, attended the Annual Healthy Calf Conference hosted by Veal Farmers of Ontario. Great calf care topics were discussed and it comes at a perfect time to remind us about the importance of cold weather calf care. ⛄️

Calves under a month old require special care during this time of year since they are the most susceptible to cold stress at this age. As mentioned at the calf conference: the thermoneutral zone is 10-26˚C for newborn calves and 0-23˚C for 1-month-old calves. This means that when environmental temperatures get below these ranges, calves will start using extra energy to maintain their core body temperature. 🌡

Here are some tips on how to keep your calves warm and thriving this winter:

❄️ Use calf jackets: They provide insulation and protection from the elements.
❄️ Provide lots of clean, dry bedding: Deep straw bedding is gold standard.
❄️ Provide adequate nutrition: If cold stressed, calves will require more energy from their diet.
❄️ Check that your calf housing areas are protected from wind-chill: Avoid drafty areas, position hutches so that wind isn’t blowing directly in the front and consider having windbreaks &/or heat lamps for added protection.

If you have any questions about how to optimize winter calf care at your farm, feel free to reach out to any one of the veterinarians at our clinic!😁

We are looking for a hardworking individual who works well independently, in a group setting and can take direction well. We have a part time position available at our modern dairy farm.
Hours would be a spilt shift Mon and Tuesday 7:30am-12pm (approx) and 4pm-6:30pm (aprox). Working with live animals can sometimes be unpredictable therefore the hours may slightly vary.
