Dash’s mom reached out to me for help feeling overwhelmed with his frequent, prolonged barking, difficulty settling around guests, and his tendency to ignore/avoid attempts to call him inside while out in the yard. 

Our first priority was booking a vet appointment to address any physical discomfort that may have been contributing to the behaviour. In doing so, we discovered that Dash was suffering from eczema. Treatment of his skin issues resulted in an immediate and noticeable positive change in Dash’s behaviour. 

We then began virtual sessions, focusing on fulfilling Dash’s enrichment needs, managing his environment, and reinforcing specific behaviours. Last week we were able to meet in person at my client’s home. Dash was relaxed, attentive, and engaged throughout our session - a feat that would not have been possible two months ago!

I’m so proud of Dash and his mom, and what they’ve been able to achieve in such a short time. Way to go! 🧡

Today is “Change a Pet’s Life Day” and in this pic are two ways I have changed pets lives this week.

The first, is the injured puppy I am fostering for the Oromocto and Area SPCA, she is all healed up and will go to her new forever home very soon. The second is the set of dual shock collars I bought off of facebook marketplace for the sole reason of SMASHING THEM TO TEENY TINY BITS to prevent these from ever being used on a dog ever again.

After these collars were in my possession, it got me thinking. We have all seen the videos of humans using these collars on themselves, or their friends. These videos clearly show, every single time, that these collars are unpleasant at best to extremely painful. Then I started thinking about static electricity and water. When humans do these tests on themselves, they’re always wearing shoes. I searched for one where the human was barefoot and in a puddle….as a dog might be….and I could not find one.

So, bold as I am, I got the not so bright idea to test this experiment myself. I had planned on doing it on video, just to see if there was a significant difference in what I felt from the collar at the exact same setting while wearing shoes, or standing barefoot in a puddle. When I told my friends this, they became very concerned. And, after feeling the charge from these collars on just my palm, I am telling you right now there is no way on this planet that I would EVER put this on a creature I loved, and there is no way I am putting it on my own neck and standing barefoot in water.

HOW these are still legal is beyond my comprehension. I hope one day soon they are banned in Canada, just like they are in Germany, France, Spain, England (soon), The Netherlands, Austria, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden, Wales, Quebec, Slovenia, some of Australia, Switzerland, and soon to be in Belgium.

I plan on smashing these collars soon, and yes just for fun I will video it when I do, but in the meantime I am going to get them tested to see JUST how many milliamps are coming out of them and find out what that would mean for a bare-pawed dog standing in water.
