Great example of one of my favorite games to teach reliable recall - Ping Pong 🏓🐕

This cute boy tends to be a little overenthusiastic when greeting guests at the door so we are working on a more desirable sequence 🐾
The "place" command is a great way to give your dog a task to focus on when guests come to the door, rather than a free for all of barking and jumping up. This command gives the dog a chance to calm down and process that a guest is here resulting in a controlled greeting.

One of our favorite ways to exercise Sybil is with her "go find" cue where we can have her search for a person or object. Here she is searching for my husband Khristian. We had lots of fun practicing this skill yesterday as a super engaging way to tire her mentally and physically.
This is specifically perfect for Sybil as a Weimaraner as they were bred to track and hunt large game. Ensuring your dog gets access to breed specific activities is so beneficial when fulfilling their needs 💕
We had been playing the search game a few times before I took this video, so both my scent and Khristian's were all over the area she's exploring. You can see her follow different trails that we had gone down before figuring out the exact way he went.
It's so cool to see the specific moment at the end of the video where she catches onto the correct direction of the scent trail right before finding Khristian 🐾

Feels like -20 today 🥶 So engaging indoor activities are essential!
Here I've made a snuffle box out of a clementine box and some flyers... Crumpling up Sybil's breakfast in the paper, then stuffing the box will allow her to forage and shred in a safe and acceptable way. This is an especially fun activity for a dog who enjoys nose work. It is paramount to meet our dog's particular needs when providing enrichment to their lives. With a Weimaraner like Sybil, engaging mental activity is only fair, they are endurance dogs with such a large mental capacity.
We provide at least two forms of enrichment activities every single day as part of our normal routine. This keeps Sybil's problem solving and independent play at a top level, while effectively tiring her out.
A bit of confidence building and socialization at Hampton Riding Centre this morning. Sybil and I sat in on my sister’s riding lesson! What a fun time to watch the horses do some flat work and work on engagement in such a stimulating environment. 🐎🩷🐾
When approaching a situation like this, I started with basic obedience outside of the barn, and slowly worked our way into watching the horses from a distance before sitting in the arena. This way I could assess how comfortable Sybil was with the situation and how enthusiastic she was engaging with me. As well, my rate of reinforcement was very high in the beginning to make sure she was seeing value in her neutral responses. But as she became more familiar with the situation I decreased to a more intermittent level of reinforcement. A high value reward, enthusiastic praise and pets are all very important in this situation. As well, if you dog likes preforming tasks such as “touch”, “paw on”, “middle” asking them to do so can be a reinforcer as well.
Sybil was around horses as a puppy and we have spent the last six months re-introducing her to these gentle giants. This type of exposure is not something to rush and requires a very strong relationship between dog and handler. #horsesanddogs #barndog #dogtraining #socialization #positivereinforcement #rewardtrainingworks #relationshipdogtraining #weimaraner #dog #dogtrainer
A small musing on the importance of food motivation and what it can really indicate when working with your dog.

Here we’re working on an elevated paw on both front and back end (though back end is lower as we haven’t done this for a bit), her front pivot and an elevated front body while transitioning from stand to sit. When I taught an intro to agility, confidence building class, exercises similar to this were pretty standard. Not only do exercises like this build confidence, they’re also great physical conditioners as the dog uses a lot of stabilizing muscles they may not use otherwise in everyday exercise.
This had been a typical thing for Sybil and I to practice but we’ve taken a little break from more novel training in the last couple months. I’ve felt a desire to restart our novelty training because we both enjoy it so much. Enjoy us getting back at it with the little clip from this evening! 🤍🐾 #dogtraining #weimaraner #tricktraining #tripawd #dog
Today we had a spur of the moment visit to my family friend's farm for the first time in nearly 2 years. They have horses, goats, chickens and dogs along with all of the young cousins we brought along to enjoy the fun. Sybil did have an introduction to all of these animals two summers ago when she was under a year old in a more controlled way, but has not been around such a crowd of different animals in her adulthood. I was beyond proud of her as the bit of consistent work we have put in the last month re-introducing her to horses via Rockwood park really paid off. She was completely comfortable, confident and trustworthy in the environment! As you can see in this video, she even tried to initiate play with one of the sweet goats 🐐
Socializing and progressively proofing good behavior is essential to set your dog up for success in the most wild of circumstances. Also, give them time to fully mature before giving them full responsibility to handle new situations with success 😌

Our visit to Rockwood park today 🐴🌳 The horses were happy to come very close to visit which gave me a natural training moment I was happy to catch on camera. Sybil has not been this close to horses for nearly two years! I was not at all surprised that she was a bit apprehensive when she was first face to face with the horse you see in this video. We must be understanding with our dogs when they display a bit of apprehension towards new or novelty events. This builds on our relationship and the dog’s confidence.
Boundary game is a super versatile exercise to have in your back pocket. The rules of boundary game are simple once you have proofed the exercise… hang out on your bed and you will be fed. This morning as a breakfast ditching the bowl activity, Sybil and I went to a local cafe so I could work and she could have mental stimulation in real time. #dogtraining #boundarygames #sciencebased #ditchthebowl #positivereinforcement #weimaraner #tripawd #cafedog
A “quick” chat about socialization. This is a mammoth of a topic in the dog world and I could truly talk about it for hours. In this video I touch on a few important things to remember when it comes to creating a well socialized dog.
I briefly touch on some of the following topics, but if you would be interested in a more in-depth video on anything I have listed below let me know!
-how to go about proper socialization
-exposure vs overstimulation
-how to avoid creating leash reactivity or reactivity due to frustration/overexcitement
-adolescent fear period
-desocialization and difficult times of year
-relationship building and confidence building
Or feel free to reach out to me today if I have struck a chord and your dog could use some help with improving their social skills. #dogtraining #socialization #desensitization #overstimulation #exposuretherapy #puppy #sciencebased #sciencebasedtraining #positivereinforcement
