THE CDC IS REQUIRING A MICROCHIP!

A new update - all requirements to take a dog into the US have been dropped except that the dog must have been in a rabies-free or low risk country for at least 6 mos and the owner must fill out an online form before they present themselves at the border. We do not know if a new form is in the works but stay tuned - remember that Canada does still require a rabies vaccination when you return to the country.

Addendum: The export form that was original required to be signed by a licensed veterinarian in Canada as well as a CFIA veterinarian now only requires a vet signature. There is also a rabies vaccination form that must be signed by a licensed vet in Canada.

Excellent news - the CFIA abs the CDC reached an agreement for dogs crossing into the US. The CFIA vets do not need to sign off on the export papers. Once the proper documents have been obtained they are valid for the duration of the dog's rabies vaccine so 1 or 3 yrs depending on the product used. The dogs still require an ISO approved microchip and as the owner there are import forms that need to be completed. Go to the CFIA web page for complete details. We have a good supply of microchips and are happy to get you in to have that inserted and a rabies booster administered.

This is a long but crucial read for people looking to take their dog to the US

UPDATE OF TRAVELING TO THE UNITED STATES WITH A DOG

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has been working with the US Center for Disease Control (CDC) ever since the CDC announced that there would be new requirements for dogs entering the US beginning August 1, 2024. One of the required documents needs to be endorsed by a veterinarian employed by the CFIA. We have been made aware that, as of this time, the CFIA WILL NOT be providing any endorsements for export documents for dogs traveling to the US because it is in active discussions with the CDC in an attempt to streamline the process for Canadians entering the US with their dogs. The CFIA hopes to be able to provide an update later in July as to the progress they are making in this matter. The CDC is implementing these changes to reduce the spread of rabies.
Dog owners can work with their vet to prepare the changes that are coming by:
• Ensure your dog has an ISO-compliant microchip
o If your dog does not have an ISO-compliant microchip, contact a Canadian licensed veterinarian to make an appointment to implant an ISO-compliant microchip
• Have a copy of a Canadian veterinary record (for example, a vaccination certificate, health certificate, invoice or purchase records, etc.) from at least 6 months to 1 year (at latest) prior to the travel date
o For example, if you plan to travel to the U.S. with your dog on September 1, 2024, your Canadian veterinary record must be from September 1, 2023 to March 1, 2024
• Ensure your dog's ISO-compliant microchip number is accurately recorded on all veterinary records and documentation
• Ensure your dog's rabies vaccine is up to date
o Although rabies vaccination is not currently a mandatory requirement by the CDC or the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) for personal pet dogs that have been in Canada for the past 6 months, the CFIA is still finalizing the process for Canadian dogs travelling to the U.S. and it could become required or be required in certain situations
o Dogs are also subject to individual State requirements – many of which require rabies vaccination
o Rabies vaccination is required by most Canadian Provinces/Territories and is a requirement by the CFIA for dogs entering Canada
o In order for the rabies vaccination to be considered valid by the CDC, it must be done after the ISO-compliant microchip has been implanted. If your dog is due for rabies vaccination, ensure they have an ISO-compliant microchip implanted before vaccinating. If your dog has never been microchipped this may require your dog have a booster on its rabies vaccine at the time a microchip is implanted.

Update regarding Pet Travel Requirements between the US and Canada: The CFIA has released interim guidance for dogs travelling to the United States, but we still do not have a full directive.
The CFIA is working with the CDC to finalize the process and documents needed for dogs travelling from Canada to the U.S. Further guidance from the CFIA will be provided as soon as it becomes available.
In the meantime: We know this:
As of August 1, 2024, all dogs entering the U.S. must:
*be at least 6 months of age
*have an International Organization for Standardization (ISO)-compliant microchip
appear healthy upon arrival
*have a CDC Dog Import Form receipt (this form will only be made available by the
CDC on July 15, 2024, and must be submitted through the CDC website)
*have additional documentation, which varies depending on where the dog has been
in the past 6 months before entering the U.S., and the dog's rabies vaccination status (this is the part we are still awaiting more information on).

It is International Chihuahua Day - it is funny how such a small dog can scare so many people! We love our chichi patients - they range from snuggle bugs to land sharks but they have personality plus - some nicer than others. Small dogs rock. We would love to see pictures of your chihuahuas.

IF YOU TAKE YOUR DOG INTO THE UNITED STATES PLEASE READ

Attention to pet owners traveling to the United States with your dogs. As of August 1, 2024 the United States will be stepping up the health requirements to bring your dog into the US. The dog must be at least 6 months old, have a rabies vaccine, be microchipped and they must have been examined by a veterinarian within 30 days of travel. You will be required to complete a CDC Dog Import Form as well as having your vet complete a health form. There are further restrictions and requirements in place for dogs that have been in a high-risk country for rabies anytime within the 6 months prior to being presented to the border.

We hopes this helps - pets don't stare at the sun so extra precautions are not necessary. You can certainly opt to keep your pet indoors but extreme measures are not needed.

Hello friends!

The total solar eclipse is just around the corner, and just about everyone is ready to see the once in a lifetime event. We are seeing some mixed information about pet/wildlife safety.

Contrary to what some may read, the sun itself is not any more dangerous during the eclipse. The reason protective eye wear is recommended for humans (who wish to observe the eclipse) is because many of us will be staring directly at the sun that day, which is something we typically avoid.

For our pets, and outdoor wildlife, that day will be similar to any other day. Our pets don’t stare at the sun, so there is no need to keep them indoors on April 08 for any extended period of time. They may notice the change in temperature, but it is unlikely they will exhibit any unusual behaviour.

The eclipse can be more unsettling for birds. The dimming of the sky can mimic behaviour at dusk and during early storm formation, so some birds may demonstrate a wind-down behaviour and there may be less activity in the sky during the peak eclipse. Once the sky returns to normal, so does their behaviour.

If you are purchasing eclipse glasses, please make sure they meet these criteria. For additional information about the eclipse please see:
https://science.nasa.gov/eclipses/safety/

For a list of approved solar-viewing goggles please see:

https://eclipse.aas.org/eye-safety/viewers-filters

It is not safe to watch the eclipse through the lens of your smartphone - it can damage both your phone camera and your eyes. Try this instead:

Safe watching our friends!

Happy International Womens Day - we have the most amazing group of women working here. We all have our strengths and weaknesses, we all come together having followed different paths and have vastly different stories. We are a family - we work hard together, we sometimes we disagree, sometimes we are not always as kind to each other as we should be but at the end we will always support each other and have each others back. Thanks to these women for being in our lives - we are proud to call each other friend. Women - don't tear each other down - hold each other up and we can do anything.
