This is a very underutilized training method for socialization. There is this idea out there that socialization means you have to have your dog meet and interact with every person and dog that you come across. Dogs also have to learn how to NOT do these things.

We have to remember that not every person that we pass by wants to interact with every dog nor may not even like dogs. The same goes with dogs.

My dog, Joplin, is the perfect example of why I have been teaching this with her. She is ridiculously friendly with people and LOVES saying hi to established human friends, saying hi to strangers and making new human friendships every chance that we get. This is great, and typically what we want to have in our dog, but there must be boundaries to it. And I will be very honest, sometimes I am incredibly tired after work and I don't want to interact with people. I just want to enjoy my time and my walk with Joplin. Is this a bit selfish of me? Yep. But it is the reality of our kinds of lifestyles that we have today and it is ok for us humans to establish boundaries too. 🚫

I am happy to say that Joplin also loves, and will ask, to just sit down and watch the people and cars go by. Dogs see all kinds of things while doing this - Large, loud transport trucks. Vehicles towing rattling trailers. Bicycles, scooters, wheelchairs and motorcycles. People carrying umbrellas and wearing hats. People of different skin colours. Men, women and children. Other dogs and animals. We forget that these are all things (and many more) that dogs can react to if they have never seen them before. And dogs do react to these things. πŸ‘³β€β™€οΈπŸ‘²πŸ‘ΆπŸ¦πŸ•πŸˆπŸš‘πŸš²πŸ›΄

Plus, just sitting beside each other, or even with your dog in your lap, is a beautiful bonding activity. Never take these moments for granted. πŸ₯°

Sweet little Judd. 😍 As you can see from his raised right paw that he is cautiously unsure about approaching me. Judd is a rescue and has experienced some hardships in his life, so he is very anxious about people and is reactive in some situations.

Despite this, Judd has come a long way with me. Instead of having a worried facial expression, he now shows me a cute softening to his face. πŸ₯° I've really started to see this in the last few weeks. I'm so proud of him for letting go of some of his fear. πŸ€—

Introducing 9 month old Midnight❗

I was honoured to look after Midnight on Sunday. This girl is an absolute sweet cuddle bug. πŸ₯°

We had a fabulous time together and I think we both thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. It was a last minute request as her family had an urgent situation come up, so I hope I get to see Midnight again sometime. 🀞

Families with reactive dogs, this is a FANTASTIC way of gauging your dog's behaviour and what your response should be.

I was just having a discussion with a client last week on what suggestions they should give their dog's sitter while they are away about their dog's reactivity. We had discussed that it is ok to just turn around and go the other way when their dog is beginning to react to another dog. Trying to force the dog to deal with the situation is just going to back-fire and make everyone upset and frustrated. No good will come from that.

It terms of this graphic, it would be keeping their dog in the green to yellow zone and not forcing it into the red zone. Sometimes there is no other available option to avoid a trigger, but we should do our best to do so whenever possible.

Families without a reactive dog, please keep this in mind when you see a dog beginning to react as it comes near you. You can do your part to support a reactive dog by just calmly walking by, keeping your dog to yourself. This is not the time to allow your friendly dog to try to say hi or to get in the other dog's space. The reactive dog deserves to have it's own space to feel safe. No judgement nor advice is necessary.

Just like humans, canines have their own feelings and act according to those feelings. They also have their own way of communicating their feelings and humans must respect the difference.

🐾

TRAFFIC LIGHTS AND REACTIVITY

Before trying to work on improving reactivity, consider what colour your dog’s emotional state is in.

The belief or expectation that by continually exposing reactive dogs to triggers will make them get over it, is setting dogs up to fail.

Generally, a dog that is reacting to something does not feel safe – they are in survival mode – a mode where learning and appropriate responses simply cannot take place.

Neurotransmitters like adrenaline and cortisol flood the brain causing automatic responses intended for survival. This red zone is certainly not the time or the place to try to change behaviour.

We need to start working with a brain that is calm, relaxed, focused and feels safe – the green zone, where learning can take place.

A calm nervous system is essential to learn a new way to respond.

To recognise which colour an emotional state is, we need to become more adept at recognising and interpreting our dog’s body language.

Being aware of body language enables us to intervene before our dogs’ emotions – the β€œtraffic light” changes colour.

Always start in the green zone, this is where we can really help our dogs to learn strategies to cope with triggers.

Keep working in the green - reinforcing, proofing and building confidence.

Once behaviours are established in the green, we can try moving into the amber zone by allowing our dogs to notice and be aware of distractions, but at a sufficient distance where they still feel safe and are able to focus. This is where we can make distractions or triggers feel far less threatening.

Stay out of the red as much as you can. Avoiding this is not always possible – life happens / the unexpected happens and we have no control over this.

In this case get as much distance as possible between your dog and the trigger.

We can’t teach our dogs to feel safe, but we can help them feel safe by managing the environment, taking small achievable steps, being aware of body language and intervening when their emotional traffic light is about to change colour.

A question I am often asked is, "Do you train dogs?" ❓

I walk all kinds of dogs and I specialize in large/reactive/aggressive dogs. I am not a certified trainer and I do not provide formal training services. If you need a formal trainer I am always very happy to refer you to one, as I know two fantastic certified CPDT dog trainers,

While I don't provide formal training services I can help you with the basics, particularly with leash walking and leash manners.

If you have a reactive or an aggressive dog I have good knowledge of canine behaviour and anticipating stress and triggers. I can effectively and safely manage (on most occasions) your dog's behaviours when they are triggered.

Can you train my dog out of their reactivity or aggression? Generally speaking, no I can't. Reactivity and aggression can be very complex behaviours, and assessing and working toward learning new behaviours requires the knowledge and skills that a certified trainer has. As mentioned, I can manage the behaviours. Over time, a dog may be able to learn better coping strategies. If you want to commit to working with a trainer to assess and work towards behaviour change, I am happy to refer you.

What I can do is work with you to identify stressors and triggers and strategies to try to avoid those triggers or do the best you can do to manage your dog's behaviour. My dog can be reactive so I understand how frustrating and embarrassing it can be and we can talk about that.

What I can also do is implement the strategies that your trainer has assisted you with, provided that said strategies are ethical and are as least intrusive as possible.

What I need from you is your complete honesty to the best of your understanding about your dog's behaviour. Safety is very important - for me and the public. It is irresponsible to knowingly withhold information about your dog's level of reactivity or aggression. This level may not prevent you from receiving my services, but I will definitely terminate all services if I discover that my or public safety is at risk because of withheld information.

I hope this info is helpful.

I am tremendously proud to announce Canine Cuddles n' Care's 10th anniversary! πŸŽ‰

July 7th, 2014 was the day that Canine Cuddles n' Care was officially registered with the government as a business. βœ…

I can't say enough thank you's to my clients in Grimsby, Beamsville, Winona and Stoney Creek. Thank you for over 9 years of your business, loyalty and friendship. You made me a successful business and remained supportive and loyal during the years of the pandemic. You supported my decision to move out of the Niagara area and wished me well. I miss you all so much. πŸ’•

Thank you to my clients in Harriston, Palmerston, Clifford, Listowel, Atwood and Mount Forest. Thank you for your business, loyalty and kindness. You have no idea just how much that means to me. A special thank you to the very first few clients that gave me a chance and hired me as your professional dog walker. Being the new girl and new business in a very small town is not easy. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. ❀

Thank you to the many other professional dog walkers, trainers, kennels, groomers and veterinarian clinics that I have built supportive relationships with along the way. I am proud to work along side of you in the canine industry. πŸ™Œ

Thank you to all of my many followers, long time and new. I appreciate the support on social media, which plays a very significant role in having a successful business. πŸ’–

Restarting my business in a very small town is much harder than I thought it would be, but I will continue to work my ass off to be the best that I can be. That's just who I am. πŸ’ͺ

Cheers πŸ₯‚ and thank you for sharing this special day with me. πŸ™

Most sincerely,
Chantelle
