Reactive dog tips!

Right now, meeting those dogs by being dragged towards them is damaging their chances of ever changing.
You aren't being rude by not allowing that.
You're actually helping !
If that cycle continues, it rarely gets better and can get a whole lot worse.

You aren't spoiling their fun, well....actually you might be but that's ok for now.

Use that distance.
Have a much higher reward than you may have been using (esp if little progress has been made).

If they don't want that food.... they are very likely too close.
Or that food isn't what they would sprint to the moon and back for.

Playing with them is another good option.
Reward with play !
For some dogs that is a key area often overlooked.

Look into pattern games and U turns.
Some of those techniques are on this page..... feel free to scroll back.

Don't give up.

You really can do this !

Reward calm behavior and ones you wanted repeated.

Reward calm behavior and ones you wanted repeated.

"Yeah....I don't believe it"
To be fair, I didn't either.
This is one of those "hints and tips" that everyone searches for.
It also goes hand in hand with "reward what you want to see more of".

Want a dog to not jump when they are beside you?
Reward four feet on the ground.

Want your dog to be calmer?
Catch those times when your dog is naturally calmer and reward.

Are there pitfalls with this?
Of course !
Dogs that become excited by food, this needs more carefully implemented.

If you don't believe this will work...try it.

Try giving them a reward or two or four when you notice them resting (not sleeping) just when they are naturally doing nothing.

They may get up and investigate if you have more....but watch what happens when they start to "figure it out".
It can take a few weeks for some.

How do you know it's working?

Watch them start to choose calm.
They’ll lie down more. Stay close by more. Settle more easily

We are also giving them clarity with what we want, while following the golden rule of dog training.......

One thing is for sure!
When you start to see these signals, it opens your eyes.
Fully.
So how do dogs show they just aren't interested or need a break from interacting with another dog?
This shows some fairly common ways.
If we ignore these "no thanks" signals, it can cause issues for some.

I've said it before....no one likes a pest, and dogs are no different.

That dog that just won't give up?
Even when your dog may be desperately signaling their little heart out.
We have to intervene.

Are we "interfering" with their natural communication?
Yes we are, because that communication given is not being received.
If ever there was a time to advocate and intervene.....that is the time.

Over arousal/over stimulation is a very big cause of dogs not receiving clear communication well.

So we have to step in when the other dog "just doesn't get it".
