I’m proud to share this amazing initiative from MSAR - Service Dogs (Manitoba Search and Rescue) and Courageous Companions, this incredible organization has changed my life. I am fortunate to be a two-time service dog handler through their programs, and I can’t say enough about the transformative impact these dogs have had on my life.
I’m so grateful for the love, support, and incredible dogs I’ve received from Courageous Companions. If you’re a veteran or first responder in the Edmonton or Winnipeg area, I encourage you to take this opportunity!
NOT A VETERAN OR FIRST RESPONDER?
If you're not a veteran or first responder but are interested in obtaining a service dog, there are still great options available depending on your location and needs.
Here’s some helpful information:
For Manitoba or Out-of-Province Residents
MSAR - Service Dogs (Manitoba Search and Rescue) has programs designed to assist the general public in acquiring service dogs. These programs cater to a variety of needs, including but not limited to:
- PTSD
- Mobility support
- Autism support
- Seizure alert
To learn more about MSAR’s programs for the general public, visit their website or contact them directly to discuss eligibility and next steps.
For the Edmonton Area
Holdfast K9 offers service dog training programs for the general public. They work with individuals to train their dogs (or provide already-trained dogs) to meet specific needs. Whether you're looking for a service dog for medical alert, psychiatric support, or mobility assistance, they can help guide you through the process.
Steps to Getting a Service Dog
1. Determine Your Needs:
Identify the type of support you require from a service dog (e.g., physical assistance, mental health support).
2. Contact a Reputable Organization:
Research organizations like MSAR, Courageous Companions or Holdfast K9 to see which program best suits your location and requirements.
3. Application and Assessment:
Most organizations have an application process to assess your eligibility and ensure a service dog is the right fit for you.
4. Training and Placement:
Depending on the program, you may either work with a pre-trained service dog or train your own dog with professional guidance.
5. Certification
While not all provinces mandate certification, some programs provide proof of training for added legitimacy. (Alberta requires certification)
Other Options:
If you're outside these areas, reach out to local dog training schools or service dog programs in your region. Many organizations across Canada are dedicated to helping individuals in need, regardless of their status as a veteran or first responder.
A service dog can make a world of difference in improving independence and quality of life—don’t hesitate to explore your options!
