Correct grooming techniques > assuming a haircut is needed
Groomers and haircuts are basically synonymous… however if you already follow you know I have opinions about that 😜
I often dislike haircuts because;
1. They’re often unnecessary
2. They can be very damaging
3. They’re driven by misinformation
4. They create longterm problems
1.Most pets don’t need haircuts - ever. They need grooming, but having their hair removed or cut isn’t something they need or benefit from.
2.The hair changes when it’s damaged.. it can’t function the same and the more damage, the less function, the more problems we see.
3.Haircuts are done with good intentions, why else would we do it? Unfortunately there is a lot of misinformation about grooming and it’s often made out to be very simple - it’s just dog grooming 🤷♀️ however it’s important to know how our action will effect the pet, what will the outcome be if I do this? Not just today, but a year from now.
This is why step number 1 is always assessing. How can we know what would be helpful before we know what we’re working with?
4.The focus on removing hair often leads to other aspects of grooming being overlooked, or neglected entirely. Yes the hair needs some form of care, whether it be combing/detangling, deshedding, hand stripping, or a haircut - and there’s usually a very clear and appropriate choice to meet the pets individual needs. Choosing a haircut for a pet who needs to be deshedded or hand stripped makes as much sense as trying to pull the hair out of a dog who doesn’t have pullable hair. It’s going to cause pain and other secondary problems.
WELL MAINTAINED hair will provide your pet the best, most natural form of protection - from their environment, parasites, weather and more.

Hand stripping is only possible on a certain coat type. This hair functions inherently different from other types, as it will not shed or release from the follicle independently. Therefore, it needs to be manually removed or pulled out. Then, and only then, will the new hair growth begin. This kind of hair tends to be more harsh, wiry, and vibrant in color and these qualities are increased with continued, frequent hand stripping. The wiry texture decreases matting and tangles, and increases weather resistance/water repellence, UV and overall protection. The opposite is true when this hair is cut or trimmed. Harsh hair will become soft, fuzzy, and increasingly difficult to manage, comb, or keep clean. How does this happen? If there is no new hair growth, does it not grow back? There are two main types of hair; primary, and secondary.Primary is the main hair. Containing the structure, pigment, and there is only 1 per follicle.Secondary hair is less structured, softer. It contains little pigment, is often fuzzy, and there are many per follicle surrounding the primary hair. The hair that can be pulled from the root, is the primary hair. No new hairs grow in, until the root is removed. The secondary hair, or "undercoat" as its often referred to as, will continue to shed and grow. With so many more secondary to primary hairs, this type of coat often appears to grow back very quickly when clipped down. This often results in a soft, messy coat that tangles easily, seems to grow very fast, and is difficult to manage at home and in salon. Skin issues are a common association and tend to become more frequent and severe with increased age. Not for show, for health! Aesthetics aside, this difference in function means it responds differently to being clipped or trimmed which can lead to significant skin imbalances, hair loss, and overall diminished quality of life.

Silly Saturday post 🤪
Was going to save this for a #tbt but it’s so good I couldn’t wait 😂
@kaemclaren, @shauntragohn and I went to @letsgroomshow a few years back in Niagara and I tried teaching Shauntra how to floss 😅
Are we killing it or what? 🤩

This little fluffer was so funny after his grooming session 🤪
This is Milo, and man was it tough to catch this on camera 😅 every time I’d try to film him he would stop 🛑 NO PUPPARAZZI 🛑 haha
We allow dogs to roam and check out the salon and play for some time before and after their grooming (we do not allow interaction between pets who aren’t housemates).
This lets them build confidence as they become familiar with the salon and they have a chance to let loose and have fun! We have squeaky toys and bones to help unwind after a big spa day 😌
It’s interesting seeing their personalities come out the more comfortable they become with us, much like kids!
Do you know what your pet is like at the groomers? Sleepy😴, silly 🤪, serious😐 or maybe even nervous 😳? Let us know!

All jokes aside, positive reinforcement, and positive association helps your pet to enjoy seeing us! We then become the “lady with the beef livers”, rather than the “lady that touches my feet and booty” 😅
Your pets well being, safety and comfort is our top priority! Always, guaranteed 💜
If your pet is terrified to see the groomer 😬🥵 let’s look at why, and see if we can show them it’s not so scary! Grooming shouldn’t be a traumatic, terrible experience. It should simply be something your pet does - a routine part of their life!

These are my personal dogs, Sausage and Orka. This time of the year they get itchy, and deal with some fungal issues (seasonal allergies). In order to help speed the recovery and balance them out, we spray them daily with triple oil and hydration spray, and ozone therapy bath them weekly! This way, it’s a short court of itchies that doesn’t have to last for months, or even worse years. Just a few weeks, and they’re back to doggy livin it ✅ #ivsanbernard #doggy #doglife #doggroomer #dog #doglover #doglovers #dogs #dogoftheday #dogsofinstagram #doggroomingofinstagram #dogphotography #doglove #dogmom #skin #skincare #health #pampered #fungus #seasonalallergies #allergies #summer #ozone #bath #hydrate #love #skincarespecialist #notjustagroomer #morethanagroomer #petaesthetician
