BREAKING NEWS ...Due to a 865% increase in Property taxes, the Rescue is closed to all further intakes. The rescue property was initially taxed residentially at $737.56 per year which was manageable for us. A month ago we were informed that we are classed as commercial by MPAC and that they did a reassessment that included previous years. As a result we owe $6,360.86 for our property taxes which needs to be paid by November 22, 2024. Also, the rescue had to pay the township $5,000.00 just one month ago to apply for permanent rezoning of the land so that we can operate the rescue. In the last two months, we will have given Melancthon Township $11,360.86. All this so that we can continue saving the stray, injured and abandoned cats in our town. We at a loss to find this money as we have many sick cats that need surgeries that will have to be placed on hold.
THIS POST IS NOT INTENDED TO SPEAK NEGATIVELY ABOUT MELANCTHON TOWNSHIP. WE APOLOGIZE FOR THIS POST CREATING ANY NEGATIVITY TO OUR TOWNSHIP. THE TOWN STAFF HAVE BEEN VERY HELPFUL THIS POST IS TO MAKE AWARENESS OF OUR FINANCIAL SITUATION AND THAT WE ARE UNABLE TO TAKE IN ANY CATS AT THIS TIME.
Please note the township has given suggestions and feel bad about the situation but it is MPAC that declares our tax amount. We will be filling a request for reassessment in November when the application window is open.
In order that we can raise the money, we are holding a 10 Dollar challenge fundraiser and are asking for donations of door prizes so that we can start the contest on Sunday September 29th and will post the prizes on our page. Tickets for the draw are $10.00 each. Stay tuned for details about the 10 dollar challenge fundraiser this Sunday.
If you are able to donate towards the fundraiser to pay our tax increase, please send an e-transfer to [email protected] . We will also enter you into the 10 Dollar Challenge draw.
We will be having an Open House at the rescue on Sunday October 6th from 11 am to 3 pm and the winners will be drawn at the rescue at 3 pm.
In the meantime please call Alliston Humane Society, Cats Anonymous, Georgian Triangle Humane Society, Orangeville SPCA, Upper Credit Humane Society, North Halton Kitten Rescue, Arthur Animal Rescue, Audrey Peacock or Karens Kittens for all your found cats and kittens.
Thank you for your help and understanding while we navigate through this and continue to care for all existing residents of the rescue. Please fell free to call the rescue at 519 278 0707 if you would like to speak to us about our situation.
