UPDATE! Joe (aka Same Old Story) is on his way to PEI thanks to New Start Standardbreds- Maritimes Community and some amazing donors who assisted with his bail from a kill pen in Oklahoma and transportation costs. Joe has some injuries and ailments that need tending but he's already looking much better after a few weeks of groceries and TLC. Joe is also an important reminder that selling retired racehorses to Amish communities only defers their path to the slaughter pipeline (and means years of toil and suffering until they outlive their usefulness). These horses do everything that is asked of them - and they deserve a better fate. We must call on the racehorse industries to implement programs/services/incentives that provide rehoming and/or retirements for horses once their careers have ended.

We are so grateful to North Mountain Animal Sanctuary for agreeing to provide Fern with her forever home at the end of the summer. While we love her and try to shower her with attention, there is no substitute for having a fellow pig companion like Sugar Bear. These animals are so smart and so active and inquisitive, the need for stimulation and same-species interaction cannot be over-stated. So excited to see the Pet Care coloring books brought to Cuba shared with local children! Thank you so much Indira Rionda for bringing Animal Welfare education to Cuban schools - this important work will have an indelible impact on the future of dogs and cats in . Thank you to everyone who donated for our Cuban and mission, we were able to deliver more than $3000 CAD worth of medicine, flea and tick treatment, and food and treats to Tania Amaro who cares for more than 120 animals in her home in Cardenas - many of whom have special needs.

Friends - many of you may have already heard about the horrific torture of a wolf in Wyoming at the hands of Cody Robert’s - there is a petition circulating to demand he face felony charges (he got a $250 fine). Meta won’t let me share the link (ugh) but please head to www.change.org and search his name in the petitions and sign …. Lawmakers need to send a message this type of behavior will not be tolerated. Thanks to the West Prince Veterinary Hospital and some very generous donors, we were able to secure an additional 40 cat and dog flea/tick and 36 deworming treatments at cost! This brings the total flea/tick treatments for to nearly 90!

Thank you to Colin Scales and Katie (shown) and everyone at Blue Ribbon Pet Supply for donating $800 worth of flea and tick meds for dogs in Cuba! That’s enough to treat almost 50 dogs!!! Colin also donated the suitcase this will be filled with supplies for a rescue in Veradero!

Animal education is key to helping make change and these books (and stacks of crayons) are sure to be a big hit with local children!

Calling on my animal loving friends for a little assistance. Heading to Cuba later this month with a care package for the local animal rescue in Varadero. Supply shortages are severe right now so I’m bringing flea and tick medication (just look at this guys ears - arrived at rescue this week), dermatitis medication, vitamins, puppy milk replacer, gauze, antiseptics, sardines, rice, dog food and cat food. I’m working with a local pet store and vet clinic to try and purchase as much flea/tick and other med products at cost (stay tuned) and so I’m reaching out to see if we can raise funds to fill an entire suitcase (suitcase will be left behind for a whelping box). If you are interested in helping donations can be etransfered to [email protected] - please put Cuba in the subject box. I will continue to share information as more partnerships come on board. For those looking for more information on the needs in this area, you can join the private group Stray Dogs and Cats in Veradero. The selflessness of these local heroes, both private citizens and local vets will amaze you. With very little resources (including relying entirely on donations for medical supplies to spay and neuter as well as care for hundreds of animals) their efforts and impacts are amazing. They also assist with air transport to help rehome as many animals as possible to forever homes. Stay tuned for more updates.

UPDATE: When Plan A falls apart - Plan B takes effect! :D The filly from the livestock sale is now at Storybook Adventures! She's underweight, covered in rain rot and terrified of human contact - but with some time and patience we were able to get a lead on her and pet her head and neck this morning ... she's got a long road ahead of her ... but she is safe!

Our sweet Shyanne is going to make someone a wonderful trail partner/companion. She is so smart and willing - learns very quickly and loves attention. Shyanne is a 12 yr old, 15 hh, Standardbred/pony mix. She is barefoot, goes out alone or with a group, has no vices and is an easy keeper. Shyanne is also gaited - she will move between the pace and the trot (and a smooth rack gait in between)... the more fitness she has the easier it is for her to remain in the trot if that is your preference - but she is a smooth comfortable ride. She also steps easily into the canter (and has begun some light canter training). While Shyanne is 'green' broke, she is uncomplicated, no spook and aims to please. Her adoption fee is $750. Anyone interested in adopting a horse is asked to fill out the form pinned to the top of our page and send a DM to touch base!
