We are seeing cases of fog fever in some parts of the province, here is a reminder of what it is, and how it can be avoided:

Fog fever is a pneumonia that occurs when cattle are moved from a dry, poor quality pasture to a lush green pasture.

The cause is the rapid increase in the availability of the amino acid tryptophan when the rumen bacteria are not adapted to it.
This causes an increase in the production of 3-methylindole, which is absorbed into the blood and circulates around the body. 3-methylindole is harmful to the tissue lining the lungs, so as more 3 methylindole is circulated through the blood, more damage is done to the lungs.

Signs can begin as early as 12 hours after cattle were given access to the lush forage, but most often are seen 4-10 days after the forage change. You may see cattle breathing rapidly with a reluctance to move, standing with their head & neck extended and lowered, with flared nostrils. Cattle may wheeze, have an expiratory grunt, and may have froth flowing out of the nostrils. Coughing is not a clinical sign.

Prevention: do not give cattle unlimited access to lush pasture after grazing poor quality pasture. Adaptation (for 10 days) by limit grazing is advisable. It is also thought that an ionophore may help reduce the severity, this should be fed 1 week before turnout, and continued for 10 days after turnout.

🎶 I’ve been everywhere man, I’ve been everywhere 🎶
Our grass sampling continues and we’ve travelled north to south, east to west for the second time this summer. The grass is in very different shape across the province, mostly due to moisture, some pastures are scary and others looks wonderful.
Here’s hoping you have all the grass you need. If you have questions about quality and what supplementation you may need, give us a shout!

A new study out of UC Davis shows that lab grown meat may not be the environmental savior many people were hoping for. Nothing beats natural!

Fresh research out of the University of California, Davis suggests the global warming potential of cultured meat could be between four and 25 times higher than regular beef if a highly refined growth medium is used in its production.

Calves born to vitamin deficient cows have a harder time mounting an immune response, putting them at higher risk of neonatal diarrhea and respiratory disease.
Did you know vitamin quality decreases over time? Particularly during calving, it's important to provide a fresh, high quality vitamin supplement.
