The best thing I’ve ever heard about dogs and resource guarding is for people to stop taking away food from puppies. Think of it like you are sitting in a restaurant eating your favourite meal and someone comes up to your table and takes away your plate. I think you would have some choice words for that person, right? So I’m sitting here protecting our little visitor Jean while she has a chew through the thunderstorm. Roque and Tundra eat much faster than Odin and Jean so I will keep them away so they can eat their chews in peace.
Help your dogs grow confidence with their resources so they don’t have to feel protective of their food. If you want your dog to give up food, then practice food switching. Trade them for some food of equal value and grow it to trading for lesser value food but always makes sure it’s a good deal for the dog! My guys also go in their crates to eat for dual purpose: to increase value of the crate and also to protect them from each other, so no stealing takes place. You may not always be able to do this, but the more often you can prevent stealing, the better! Maybe even toss a treat down so your puppy gets a double boost of confidence.

Welcome to Hakuna Matata Pet Services Page! I am Tammy Stewart, a Pro Dog Trainer through absoluteDogs. I started digging into how to help my own dog, Roque (the German Shepherd) who is nervous and reactive. Since I receive a lot of bad advice with him, I decided I wanted to help other people who are frustrated and feel alone with their reactive dogs. My second passion is scent because scent helped to boost his confidence and really helped us bond as a team. All three dogs love scent and it’s a lot of fun for all of us! While I love competing in the SDDA, I think that we also need to remember to have fun with our dogs. I’m putting together fun scent challenges between trials so we can just enjoy playing together with our dogs and not take it too seriously all the time.

Confidence Building

Even though Odin came to me as a super confident puppy from his amazing breeder, I also want him to stay that way, so this is novel to him. I try to always change it up with different items, even different containers, sometimes in a box or a pool or even just on the floor. Also a great game to provide enrichment when it’s too cold or rainy outside.

Multi-dog cardboard chaos and noisy box!

Funder is a great game for the concept of proximity. If your dogs recall is a little lack lustre or your dog doesn’t focus on you as much as you would like, then proximity is the concept for you! Note: if your dog is taller than you, simply throw the treat past your side so your is still running close to you as they go past. Ask me for other great ways to build proximity with your dog!

If anyone has a nervous nelly dog like the German Shepherd here, cardboard chaos is a great game to build confidence and optimism. We started out with just a few boxes but have built up to this craziness. Just throw some treats into the pile and let them go! Or if you feed kibble, this is a great way to give your dog his dinner through a game. On a freezing rain day this is a great way to entertain my crazy dogs. To up the ante, I have added bubble wrap, their dog beds are in there and sometimes I put some fitness equipment in there or stack the boxes into a tower to make it more challenging. Add anything you like, just make sure it’s always different!
