I choose to be different and make no apologies
Let me tell you, being that weird therapist when I first started always got me a little upset, I knew what I was doing worked the horses responded well and showed that it had worked yet I always felt like I was trying to prove to humans that it worked.
Why because back then we lived in a society of you needed to be seen to be doing something (I thought I always was as my hands would say there was lots going on) but I mean and still to this day I even go oooh when I hear a pop but we all know that science has explained what that means, anyhow back to the subject
I was often ridiculed because I didn't have a degree, maybe seen as one of those therapists who disappear quickly but I am still hear working full-time years later and you don't stay in a job if your work isn't affective, I am sure I have a great personality but results keep you in business not your infinite charm (yeah, I know people who know me will be laughing at this point), and often those same ones who said what I did didn't work are now incorporating the stuff into their work, but I have never changed my way of working I have just adapted and gone even more woo woo
What I am trying to say is stick with the weirdness as us in the know know there is nothing weird about the work we do, and let me tell you as years have gone on, I have got softer and that doesn't mean hovering around the horse that means I work with the softness beneath my hands and wait until I know the moment, I can ask for more. Softness is often misinterpreted as a light touch but its a softness throughout our body and mind its really hard to explain but its a thing that i and the horse gets in that moment.
But just because I don't have a degree it doesn't mean I don’t have an education, in fact 10 years later I am still being educated as things change, new things are discovered some may say you only need experience but I disagree, you need both, without education the experience maybe misinterpreted without experience of many horses the education will fail. How can we tell if things are wrong if we don't have a baseline in anatomy to know where things should have been. Now anyone who knows me knows I am passionate about getting it right for the horse in fact probably annoyingly passionate or ranty I think some people would refer to the latter.
So, if you are a new therapist who may be struggling with your confidence by being a little different that’s ok, we all do and still do but believe me being a little different in a crowd has its advantages.
