It’s Not Just About Riding 🏇
When you sign up for riding lessons, you’re not just learning how to sit in a saddle.
Horseback riding is a fully immersive experience that involves groundwork, horse care, and communication with your horse. Learning communication, grooming, tacking, and care all help keep your horse happy and both horse and rider safe. You’re building a relationship, not just learning to ride.

Riding is Physical 💪
Riding is a full-body workout! You need balance, core strength, flexibility, and coordination. Strength and mobility are key to riding. Riding a horse is not as simple as it looks. It takes strength and stamina to maintain good posture to stay safe and execute aids properly.

It’s Inherently Dangerous ⚠️
Let’s be real—horses are big animals, and no matter how well-trained, they are still animals with their own thoughts, instincts, and reactions. Riding can be risky, and every rider should be prepared for that reality. Horses can spook, trip, or act unexpectedly, and that’s something every rider needs to understand when stepping into the saddle. Safety is a priority, but it’s an inherently risky activity.

Horses Have Their Own Personalities 🐴
Just like people, horses have their own personalities, quirks, and moods. Some are calm and patient, perfect for beginners. Others might be more spirited or shy. A horse’s temperament can change depending on the weather, their health, or even their relationship with the rider. It’s important to understand that riding isn’t just about controlling the horse—it’s about developing a bond with an animal that has its own feelings and needs.

The Cost of a Lesson Is Not Just Paying for the Instructor’s Time 💰
When you pay for a riding lesson, you're not just covering the instructor’s time. There are hidden costs behind the scenes: the horse’s care, feeding, grooming, equipment, insurance and the labor and supplies to upkeep the riding facility. Horses need a lot of attention, and riding schools have to cover a lot of expenses just to offer a safe, comfortable environment for riders and horses alike.

It Takes More Than 30-60 Minutes a Week to Be a Great Rider ⏱
Becoming a great rider takes dedication, practice, and time. It’s not just about the hour-long lesson once a week. To really improve, you need consistent practice, extra time spent with the horse, and a commitment to learning. It’s a journey that involves patience, persistence, and sometimes even setbacks. But the rewards are worth it: the feeling of riding with confidence, control, and trust in your horse is incredibly fulfilling.

What about you? What do you wish people knew?

Coors is settling well in his winter home at Ava's ❄️✨
All of the lesson horses get leased out to select students for the winter so that they still get exercise, love and attention through the colder months!

We're not sure who's happier about this winter pair up, Ava or Coors? 🥰

Thank you to all our supporters out there 🤍 parents, family, friends...we appreciate you!

Thank you to all our supporters out there 🤍 parents, family, friends...we appreciate you!

This one is for the supporters of the game.

The spouse, parent, friend—the person that the athlete, competitor or student looks up to and respects the most.

Your job is crucial.

If you have someone who turns to you, you have a big responsibility.

Your job is to push this person to believe in themselves and keep trying, even when the cards are stacked against them and it seems the tables will never turn.

When they have little faith, you might be the one God is using to give them the glimpse of hope that keeps them going.

Sometimes that is all it takes, just that little push, to help them try just one more time.

Is tough love necessary?

Absolutely—this isn’t all butterflies and rainbows. Sometimes they need to hear things that are hard to take, but growth happens in the tough places. Just follow up with encouragement, let them know you believe in them.

Keep pushing when necessary and backing off when needed.

It isn’t your place to kill the dream God put in their heart.

Whether you are the competitor or the supporter, or both… Let’s do our best to build up and not tear down.

You’d be amazed what someone can achieve with a little confidence behind them!

As a busy season at Ride and Shine comes to an end, an ode to the horses that made it all possible 🤍 :

I am a lesson horse.
I am a horse that isn’t as recognized as the top hunter jumpers, the best western pleasure horse, or the 1D barrel horse, I am a lesson horse. I am the backbone of the foundation to do all of those things. I am a lesson horse.

I am not loved by one person. I am loved by several people. I don’t have my person, I have my people. I am a lesson horse.

I will teach your child and yourself more than just to ride. I will bring your child out of their shell. I will teach your child about life. I will be yours and their shoulder to cry on. I am a lesson horse.

I will bring my family the joy of teaching kids. I will bring my families business growth. I am so loved by my family, even if they don’t express it everyday. My family allows others to show me love and enjoy me. I am a lesson horse.

At the end of your childs’ journey on a lesson horse, they will out grow me. They will find one that jumps higher, a horse that is show quality, a horse much faster than me. But, I will never outgrow being a lesson horse. I will be the one that loved your child and helped your child grow into the rider and person they are. I am a lesson horse.

At the end of my time as a lesson horse; I will be covered in grey hair. Each grey hair came from each hour I spent as a lesson horse. I will be in a field of green grass, I will be taken care of as I was when I was a lesson horse. I will watch your child from across the pasture love her new horse. But, I will love your child more than any horse can. I will be the backbone of the business, the family, and your child. Don’t forget about me, I am a lesson horse.
