Congratulations to Tiggy Hackett on winning our draw for a complimentary Senior Blood Panel!

Thank you to everyone who entered our Senior Month draw! We love to see all the annual exams and preventative care our clients take for their senior pets💛

Baseline bloodwork and early disease prevention care can help ensure your pet can stay happy, healthy, and comfortable longer! Annual bloodwork can help us catch early signs of disease by evaluating the kidney, liver, and thyroid function, as well as red and white blood cell counts. Allowing us to act quicker with treatment by identifying underlying health concerns.

🦷 TARTAR TUESDAY 🦷

How do you know if your pet has periodontal disease?

Later stages of periodontal disease your pet may have signs including

Bad breath

Swollen and red gums

Poor appetite or becomes picky

Not chewing food or swallowing

But to detect peridontal disease early regular veterinary dental cleanings under anesthesia “COHAT” where your pets mouth is evaluated and radiographed to identify any pockets, bone loss or other disease involving the tooth root or surrounding bone.

We like to think of it like an iceberg. The surface compared to what is underneath could show a different story.

This is a very clear example of a dog with Stage 4 POD, the radiograph shows significant bone loss.
We encourage early periodontal disease detection - this patient will feel like a brand new dog after going home. ❤

🦷Tartar Tuesday🦷

What is periodontal disease?

Periodontal disease is a preventable disease that is
caused by bacteria hidden under the gumline. This
can lead to bone loss, gum recession, mobility and
painful teeth. There is stages 0-4 of periodontal
disease, and without a proper oral exam by a
Veterinarian this disease can go unnoticed for many
years until the disease has reached a later stage often
resulting in painful, costly procedures such as oral
surgery and extractions. Periodontal disease can have
a systemic affect on the body.

This is 8 year old blue heeler with stage 2 POD.
You can appreciate the calculus and gingivitis (inflammed gumline).
This patient got a full COHAT which will prevent progression into painful dental disease and maintain her oral health going forward!

🎃 Happy Halloween from Valleyview Vet Clinic! Sheldon is here to show off his pumpkin he made but also to share some pet safety Halloween tips and tricks for this spooky fun filled night! 🎃

1. Keep Treats Out of Paws’ Reach 🛑
While the treats might look yummy remember, chocolate and artificial sweeteners like xylitol are toxic for pets. Make sure all candy is stored securely!

2. Keep Pets Indoors 🏡
With lots of activity, loud noises, and doorbells ringing, it’s best to keep pets indoors. If you have a nervous pet a quiet, secure room to prevent accidental escapes might be best!

3. Double-Check ID Tags
In case of an accidental escape ensure your pet is wearing their ID tag, and that your microchip info is up to date. If you have any questions about microchipping your pet for future, feel free to reach out to us.

4. Watch for Signs of Anxiety 🐾
Keep an eye out for signs of stress like whining, pacing, or hiding. If you know your pet gets anxious try creating a comfy safe space for them. Calming music or white-noise machines can help drown out the sounds of trick or treaters and late night fireworks. For dogs, frozen Kong toys or safe chews can provide enrichment and distraction.

5. Walk Early 🚶‍♀️
For dog owners, consider taking your evening walk a bit earlier to avoid running into any spooky distractions. While we might think the costumes are cute and fun, our furry friends might not feel the same.

Let’s keep this holiday fun and safe for everyone, pets included! 🐶🐱🧡 Sheldon will be spending the evening showing off his best tricks for his favourite pet friendly treats with his mom, Sydney! 👻
