If I can change one person's mind about giving blind (or any disabled) dogs a chance then I've made my boy proud.
💛🌈 I've been missing him (Mayson) extra for the last two weeks and this summer I'll have been without him for 2 whole years.
⚠️ If you truly believe dogs like Steven are better off being put out of their (non-existent) misery then I suppose you're entitled to your ✨wrong✨ opinion but do know we won't be listening to it! ✌🏻

Snow fall now also brings emotional heaviness because some of my favorite memories of my boy are from our winter walks. Every day was the best day of your life but you always had extra hops on the deep snow days!
One of those days I miss you so much it hurts out of the blue. I hope it snows somewhere in heaven for the snow-fiends like you. Miss you so much Mayson my wild all weather adventure boy 💛❄️

Did you get out with your Dog today???? 🐾
ↆ Caption from my recent TikTok ↆ
I am not feeling well, have way too much going on, work at an extremely busy dog facility during the week, have so many people to reply to, need to clean my house badly, have a cracked rib and have a 3 year old feral toddler.
It is almost 830pm.
It's cold, windy and dark outside
and it's my first chance to sit down on my only toddler-free night of the week.....
but do you know who doesn't care?
🤪STEVEN🤪
My 2 year old Blind and psychotic mastiff mix waiting for me at home!
Do *I* want to be spending 2 hours freezing running outside beyond my typical bed time with him when I could be lazy and cozy at home? NOPE 🙃
But let's talk about why that doesn't matter and why I'm out here anyway (and why you probably should be too!)
It is so common in my industry that
many dogs are deemed poorly behaved
and owners struggle when a HUGE part
of the puzzle is that they are just not
having their basic physical needs met.
Dogs like Stevie, that are insanely
energetic and while they are friendly,
they can and often do show negative
behaviours when exercise needs are
not being met such as...
- Excessive Barking
- Leash/Barrier (fence, gate, window) Reactivity
- Destruction of Household items
- Trouble Seeking
(seeking stimulation themselves such as digging)
- Separation Anxiety
- Depression
and unfortunately much much more!
When I make his needs a priority, Stevie is a great dog and easily manageable around my senior dogs and toddler on our acre property.
When I fall short on meeting his needs (which happens to all of us) he becomes destructive of my daughter's toys, constantly pesters my senior dogs, jumps up on doors and people and will excessively bark outside. It is easy to call him an annoying or misbehaving dog when in reality, he is seeking stimulation where he can because *I* have not kept my promise as an owner to meet his needs.

Happy Saturday Everyone! ☀️🐶
Thank you to all my clients (and those waiting to be clients!!) for your patience and understanding during the last year while I have struggled very much to navigate this chapter of pet loss and grief. I very much lost my purpose when I lost my boy last July and that trauma took me by surprise and changed a lot about myself personally and as a dog professional.
Thank you endlessly to those that have stuck by me on this page, continued to follow and sent kind words of support 🩵
Some know that I have been working at a local wonderful dog facility in Kamloops as a change of pace for almost a year now. I very much enjoy being a part of this business and will be integrating my Woofer Wellness services back (in person and also online/phone consultations) towards the end of the year or early 2024 😊
Please stay tuned for new business announcements in the near future, I will post here and also send out emails to my website subscribers (sign up below!) ✉️

A laugh for your day!
Stevie back with some ASMR 😂 also...he kind of likes cheese.
I am so proud to announce that I am officially certified as a Canine Health Canada Canine First Aid Instructor! ⛑️
Keeping our dogs safe in an emergency is a skill ALL owners should feel confident with and I am thrilled that this is something I can teach my clients ❤️
It's not IF your dog has a medical emergency, it's WHEN. Are you prepared?
I will be posting a VIRTUAL 2 day seminar in July and will be organizing some in person ones around Kamloops BC this summer 🐾
If you're interested in a spot, have a group you'd like to get certified and/or are interested in hosting a day, please send me a woof at [email protected]
Stay Safe this Summer ❤️🩹
Did you see that Twitch? 👀 Look closely!
While many people think this means your dog has a itchy spot, it's actually an indicator of a muscle spasm! 💥
In Murphy's case, it was accompanied by a small under the skin adhesion which is a "knot" in the muscle fibers.
To break down the adhesion and help release the tight muscle, I used Circle C-strokes to break up the tightened fibers.
To do this, place two fingers over the spot and gently but with some light pressure, move your two fingers in a 360 degree motion until you feel a release, then do the same in the other direction. After a couple times of this, there should be no more skin twitching when going over the area. Ensure you are only doing the C-Stroke for a max of 30 seconds, then giving a break.
This technique is part of a Myofasical (contractile muscle tissue and connective tissue) Release Massage which includes the facial (connective tissue below the skin) layers, bands, ligaments and tendons.
Any kind of tissue irritation effects the entire Myofasical system and can restrict movements, in this case, it restricted the movements of his Latissimus Dorsi muscle along his back.
He's feeling much more comfortable now after his full body massage ❤️
Mobile children, snacks and dogs!
When your baby starts to get around on their own, they often have a snack in tow. They throw it, they drop it and sometimes they even offer it to the dog! This can create a dog that follows your baby around and takes opportunity to steal snacks as they are offered up or dropped.
For most people this is just an easy way to clean up the mess, however, your dog should be able to understand that kid snacks are off limits until being told they can have them.
"Leave it" is the perfect cue for this scenerio and I practice with using one of Everleighs snack cups and her usual little star shaped snacks.
The important part of this video is that I am not using the kid snacks as her reward, I am rewarding her with HER appropriate treats (beef liver). I do not say "leave it" then release her to eat those snacks. "Leave it" means you do not get it. Allowing her to eat the snacks I am dropping is just telling her she can still have them after she waits. Instead, this teaches her kid food is off limits and when she doesn't steal it, she still gets rewarded with her favorite treat.
There is nothing wrong with your dog cleaning up if that's what you let them do, but it should not be a free for all around the house or around the high chair. Your dog should be able to "leave it" until told otherwise!
Impulse control takes a lot of practice but is so important to create a dog that doesn't rush for falling food or steal from your baby!
Quick clip from our social this afternoon ☺️
Marley (9), Mayson (.8.) and Ripley (7), are slowly becoming adjusted to Stevie (9 weeks) and have had many positive interactions with him! Now that he is older and learning from the big dogs he is much more enjoyable for them to have around. You guys were curious as to what their interactions look like but honestly, it's not much at this point. We have heavily supervised play sessions that are kept short and sweet and involve a ton of praise, food reward and tool guidance (Stevie has a slip lead on for control and Ripley has a muzzle on as a safety precaution).
There's a lot to unpack in this 5 minute clip! But here are some noticable points you can look for in the video! Let me know if you catch more! 👀
****Stevie is completely blind so he DOES NOT pick up on regular visual 'back-off' signals such as teeth bearing, raised hackles, stiff tail, hard stare, etc that a dog might due to increase distance. Mayson and Ripley are also blind****
1:36 Marley does a shake off - stress release
1:41 Ripley ears back - unsure of Stevie being around
1:42 Audible growl from Ripley
1:42 Stevie response by getting low, ears back and does a lip lick which are all appeasing signals trying to diffuse the tension he feels
1:59 Marley 'back off' bark and lip lick - nervous of Stevie's energy
2:46 Marley whale eye with a warning bark - nervous as Stevie quickly runs up behind her
2:51 Ripley warning bark
2:52 Stevie responds with a lip lick - feels Ripley's warning
2:54 Stevie does a shake off - stress release
3:19 Stevie licking Ripley's face which is another appeasing signal to try and diffuse tension, tail curious/appeasing wag
3:21 Ripley turns head away and gives warning bark letting Stevie know it's too much
3:39 Ripley audible growl
3:43 Stevie doing appeasing signals - licking face, slow tail wag, low to ground
3:49 Stevie shake off - stress release
3:58 Stevie lip lick - nervous he is under the group
4:33 Ripley l
