Dogs do not have the ability to sweat like us in order to cool themselves down (they can slightly sweat from the glands in their paw pads) and rely on panting in order to expel excess heat.

It's our job as owners to be on top of signs of heat stroke (hyperthermia) in our dogs when being active in the sun and high temperatures. Here in BC our summers can reach upwards of 35C+ and during these times you need to be extra cautious of this condition as it can be fatal if not treated properly.

The STARTING signs of Heat Stroke include (start cooling your dog immediately)
🔥Excessive panting with stressed expression
🔥Excessive drooling
🔥Gums (mucous membranes) are bright red
🔥Increased heart rate

Progressing Symptoms include (seek Veterinary help immediately)
🔥Disorientation
🔥Rectal Temperature above 40.6C (105F)
🔥Collapsing
🔥White/Pale gums (indicator of going into or being in shock)
🔥Vomiting and/or Diarrhea

The final stages of heat stroke if left untreated are coma and stopping breathing (begin CPR and transport to Vet immediately)

🚨 WHAT TO DO IN THIS EMERGENCY 🚨
1. Move your dog into a shaded area or more ideal and air conditioned home or vehicle.

2. Place your dog in a cool tub of water or run cool water over him. Use the hose if you are outside. DO NOT use ice water.

3. Apply a cool source (frozen vegetables or an ice pack) on your dog's head to lower heat in their brain.

4. Do not limit drinking water. Encourage your dog to drink cool (again not icy) water.

5. Gently massage their limbs in order to help circulation and minimize effects of shock.

6. Take temp every 5 minutes. If it is not going down as you try these methods, immediately get them to a Vet. Checking every 5 minutes is crucial to ensure 1) your methods are working and 2) to ensure you do not send them into HYPOthermia from being in cold water for too long etc.

7. If cooling methods ARE working and the re**al temperature is going down, monitor closely for the next 24hrs - but please still arrange a Vet visit. Ensure your dog is staying adequately hydrated!

Please ensure your dog isn't over doing it in the sun for long periods, is taking adequate breaks (also from playing in the water!) and has access to either air conditioning or shaded areas and fresh drinking water. Also remember to check surfaces before walking your dog to avoid paw burns.

This was very much needed in our town and I am thankful this now exists!

⚠️ PHASES EMERGENCY VET CLINIC IN KAMLOOPS WILL HAVE RATTLE SNAKE ANTIVENIN 🐍 Please share with your dog friends across the Okanagan!

It's that time of year again - Rattlesnake Season.

With the warm weather and beautiful sunny afternoons, these incredible little creatures are back out basking on all of the amazing trails we have in our region. Take caution with your pups when out exploring, and make sure you are monitoring them closely to ensure they don't surprise one of these little scaled friends or start to bother at them. If the worst does happen though, and they do get a bite, please call your veterinarian ASAP.

Phases Veterinary Emergency Hospital will be carrying Rattler Antivenin, taking over this responsibility from Neighbourhood Veterinary Hospital, to ensure that all pets have access to this product at any hour. We are currently the only clinic in the Kamloops region to work with Antivenin. This product, which we have to specially import through the Canadian Centre for Veterinary Biologics, helps to increase the speed and success of treatment for victims of rattlesnake bites.

The inspiration for this meal was chasing after a snotty-nosed spicy toddler whose goal on earth is to never let me actually finish a warm coffee again and needing 20 minutes of peace from the dogs to not lose my damn mind, thank you and goodnight 🙇🏻‍♀️😅

Raw Turkey (60/30/10 blend)
Cucumber Slices and a Plain Greek Yogurt Paw with Berries (toddler waste) sprinkled with Freeze Dried Egg Powder
Organ Meal Topper by Blend of grass-fed and local beef liver, kidney and heart (which made a heart that I didn't notice until I did this post! 💜)
And a few of the little organic and local Goat Kefir and Cranberry drops from

Rudysbarkary

Good luck this week everyone, I know I'll need it running these 3 plus a sick little human! 🥴

Reminder that one picture does not showcase the entire diet my dogs are fed and some meals or snacks shown are not nutritionally balanced by themselves and are not the only thing fed in a day. The supplements I give to achieve nutritional needs vary depending on ingredients I am feeding at the time and each dog is different!

It's an unfortunately fairly successful marketing tactic but.....I can promise you that expensive "dental kibble" is not doing what they say it's doing....as per you know, science 👀 (the irony of one of the kibble companies having the word "science" in their brand name hurts Lol)

HIGH CARB DIETS FUEL INFLAMMATION AND DENTAL CARIES IN DOGS....
Multiple studies show dry food is more inflammatory than raw dog food, but why? Is it the poor quality fats, chemical preservatives, mycotoxins, AGEs or because it's high in cheap, ultra processed, rapidly digested carbohydrate filler?

Emily Stein, PhD, did a piece recently for popular vet magazine Vet360, entitled "The importance of the oral microbiome in promoting and maintaining dental health" .

She says:

"The fastest way to cause inflammation is to start feeding the microbiome with sugars and carbohydrates. These dietary ingredients feed pathogens directly or indirectly, which then grow out of control and persistently activate the immune system."

This isn't surprising. Google "high carbohydrate diets inflammation" you'll quickly get the picture.

Interesting (though I wonder how many vets thought so too).

And she goes on:

"In our studies, we see significant levels of Porphyromonas species, Tannerella forsythia, and other pathogens associated with dental disease in dogs that eat foods with rice, corn, potato, sweet potato, and other fillers."

Fillers! Imagine!!

The oral pathogens really piqued my interest though. Another quick Google reveals high carb diets are strongly linked to dental caries as the bad bacteria love 'em.

One of the reasons why 80% of dry and canned fed dogs have dental disease by 3yrs of age I guess. Lack of abrasion being the other.

02/23/2024

🌱 Parsley (specifically CURLY parsley preferred for dogs) is naturally rich in vitamins and minerals, particularly vitamin K, vitamin C, and iron. In addition to its culinary uses, parsley has been traditionally used as a natural remedy for a variety of ailments, including digestive problems, bad breath, and urinary tract infections.

Some incredible benefits 💚Curly Parsley💚 can have for your woofer include:

► It’s loaded with chlorophyll, which helps detoxify and replenish the blood and has antioxidants.

► It is a natural source of fiber and can help contribute to keeping your dog's digestive system running smoothly. It helps to reduce bloating and gas while allowing the body to absorb nutrients more efficiently.

► It naturally helps to reduce bacteria in the mouth that can cause bad breath.

► Rich in vitamin C and antioxidants, boosting the immune system and promoting a healthy skin and coat. The vitamin A helps keep your dog's skin in good condition while the omega 3 fatty acids help to promote a smooth, healthy coat.

► Contains natural anti-inflammatories which will help reduce any inflammation or itching due to allergies.

► High levels of Vitamin A, C, and K as well as folate, iron, and magnesium. These vitamins and minerals help boost immunity and aid in the production of red blood cells which helps keep your dog healthy.

► Naturally high levels of magnesium can help relax nerves, allowing some anxious dogs to feel less on edge. Additionally, the Vitamin C found in parsley has also been known to help reduce stress and anxiety as it helps regulate cortisol levels in the body, while also boosting overall immunity.

Not only is Parsley easy to grow both outdoors and inside to add a boost to your dog's bowl year round but it's also very affordable from your local farmers market in season as well as the grocery store. You can chop and freeze fresh for later use and can use dried parsley as well.

I do not suggest feeding herbs with the purpose to achieve minimum requirements of vitamins or minerals in diets but I absolutely encourage you to explore safe and beneficial herbs such as this one as a nutritional addition/topper to your dog's meals! 🐶

Pictured is a very realistic, sloppy and typical 6am breakfast for Steven before I head to work (Ground Turkey and Duck w/ bone, organs and seasonal but minimal fruit/veg plus joint support, wild salmon oil and sprinkled with parsley).

Always remember that it doesn't need to be "instagram worthy" to be healthy for your dog!! 🤗

02/16/2024

I have not posted about it yet but last week it was revealed that a lawsuit has been filed due to proof being found that Hill's Pet Food (the brand sold at veterinary clinics as "prescription" kibble, which is another scam for another day, and also have a pet store non-prescription line at some stores) and two Veterinarians had FABRICATED the FDA report that caused mass panic and turmoil for pet owners claiming that "Grain-Free Diets caused DCM (Dilated Cardiomyopathy)" or heart failure and death in dogs.

Professionals who have chosen to extend their canine nutrition education BEYOND the traditional standard put out by the people employed by the company that lied about this, have known since the report came out that it was false and a complete fear tactic to trick owners back into buying their processed and extremely carb/cheap ingredient kibble with a ridiculous price tag on it. Sadly, because we CARE about our dogs, it worked and myself and many of the knowledgeable people in my industry have been battling the argument to the public ever since and it has been exhausting.

It's ground breaking that a major influential billion dollar company such as Hill's that has their dirty little paws in pretty much everything may actually be held accountable for what they did and I hope it actually comes in the near future and pet owners and smaller pet food businesses that were affected get the apology and TRUTH they deserve. We can only hope!

I will speak more on this lawsuit eventually as more comes out but for now I will remind all of my followers that being a dog owner in a day and age where you can't trust most of the information or products marketed as being great for your beloved dog there is always one thing you CAN trust for guidance.....

And it's you! You and your common sense, actually but YOU none the less! ⭐🤗

As adults with basic knowledge of how to feed ourselves and our human children/family you know at your core that the answer to longevity and health for ANY species is not crunchy little brown tasteless pellets that have had so much goodness cooked out of them the product can make it through an apocalypse (that is then sprayed with the synthetic form of the nutrients they took out...) 🤯.

The trust for our pets is back towards Nature.
In Whole Foods.
In Feeding Variety.
In them ENJOYING the food.
In letting them "Eat the Rainbow".
and in knowing that it's not true that you need a degree to know how to feed your dog properly despite what the big companies tell you!

It's not hard, you just need to find the right place to start....and that's usually your farmers market, garden, local farmer or butcher or the human grocery store!

Looking forward to helping many owners gain confidence in feeding their dogs in a way they trust and feel good about in Spring 2024 💖

Hands down, this is the most economical & powerful shelf in today's grocery store for your dog!

This little shelf holds the key🗝️ to not only make your dog healthier, but, according to the world's most cited microbiologist, Dr. Tim Spector, it will also give your dog the nutritional tools to live longer.

The more diverse your pet's microbiome🦠, the longer they will live, say microbiologists.

According to the data from the world's largest citizen science microbiome project, consuming 30 to 40 different plants a week yields the most optimal microbiome!

"Eating 30 different plants a week can boost the diversity and health of your gut microbiome. And in turn, it may affect many other aspects of your health. If 30 sounds like a lot, you'll be pleased to hear it's not just fruits and veggies that count. You can include grains, nuts, seeds, herbs, and spices, too." - ZOE

And it's no different for dogs or cats, according to the microbiologists around the world.

Next time your in the grocery store, and feeling strapped for cash to buy fresh food, check out the meat & veggie REDUCED PRICE selections. Your pet's microbiome will thank you.

Tomorrow's "5 mins Science Friday" facebook live, Dr. Karen Becker & I will debunk some of the top food myths and fears that websites still erroneously promote so you can choose fresh foods confidently, without the stress of what's toxic to pets and what's not.

Grieving is a ride I never wanted to be on and one I feel I am constantly internally begging to get off of....but never will.

I have been doing "better". I have been able to stay and pet a golden retriever without feeling a lump in my throat. I have been able to look back on memories and talk to some people about Mayson and was able to keep it together and smile instead of losing the ability to feel like I can hold myself up (most times).

I still have those painful moments throughout my day and am reminded of you in every single thing I do, because you were my world and the reason I am who I am today, but I'm starting to notice less feelings of severe pain and slowly more happy reminiscing feeling of missing him.

Months ago, I tried to bring Mayson's stuff out of the shed to sort it out and look at it but that took me 4 months to even walk to the shed. Then when I did it, opening the box that had his smell, his fur and his things he wore on our adventures put me right back to the day I lost him. Again.

Another 2 months after that, today, I decided I was able to wash the items including two of Mayson's things. I held on to the container before dumping it in for a stupid amount of time. Took a breath, dumped it in and on the day went. I feel like I am washing away my last physical forms of him.

Then it happened this morning.
I didn't see it coming so it hit me extra hard.
The laundry was done. Didn't want to look at the items so in the bin to sort later. Opened the lint trap to empty out of habit and then there it was.

I have not been able to hold his soft golden fur in my hands in 568 days and the lint trap was full of his golden fur and it took my breath away. Crying into a ball of laundry lint is probably one of my lower points of life but this is just torture. I know this is part of the healing process, all the up and down, the steps forward and the backsides but on the days it really comes out of no where it feels debilitating in the moment.

I woke up happy and excited after great news of my other dog's health yesterday and wanted to take them for an exciting run and now I feel like this heaviness makes my heart feel like lead and it's too much for me to get up and this is where I'll be mentally stuck for a while again 😔

I share the good and bad of my grief journey because I know so many of you are dealing with the same and this post is just to tell you you're all not alone. I'm here too and wish I wasn't every second.

I decided to enroll in a Pet Grief Counselor course and would love to support others before and during this time as it's something we all have to go through as dog owners ❤️‍🩹

I miss you my boy. It's a terrible feeling to feel like the only comfort I could get for this empty and heavy feeling is from you and that's the whole other cruel side of this journey.
I love you Schmoo, forever the best dog I will ever have the privilege of loving.

Did you get out with your Dog today???? 🐾

ↆ Caption from my recent TikTok ↆ

I am not feeling well, have way too much going on, work at an extremely busy dog facility during the week, have so many people to reply to, need to clean my house badly, have a cracked rib and have a 3 year old feral toddler.

It is almost 830pm.
It's cold, windy and dark outside
and it's my first chance to sit down on my only toddler-free night of the week.....
but do you know who doesn't care?

🤪STEVEN🤪
My 2 year old Blind and psychotic mastiff mix waiting for me at home!

Do *I* want to be spending 2 hours freezing running outside beyond my typical bed time with him when I could be lazy and cozy at home? NOPE 🙃

But let's talk about why that doesn't matter and why I'm out here anyway (and why you probably should be too!)

It is so common in my industry that
many dogs are deemed poorly behaved
and owners struggle when a HUGE part
of the puzzle is that they are just not
having their basic physical needs met.

Dogs like Stevie, that are insanely
energetic and while they are friendly,
they can and often do show negative
behaviours when exercise needs are
not being met such as...

- Excessive Barking
- Leash/Barrier (fence, gate, window) Reactivity
- Destruction of Household items
- Trouble Seeking
(seeking stimulation themselves such as digging)
- Separation Anxiety
- Depression
and unfortunately much much more!

When I make his needs a priority, Stevie is a great dog and easily manageable around my senior dogs and toddler on our acre property.

When I fall short on meeting his needs (which happens to all of us) he becomes destructive of my daughter's toys, constantly pesters my senior dogs, jumps up on doors and people and will excessively bark outside. It is easy to call him an annoying or misbehaving dog when in reality, he is seeking stimulation where he can because *I* have not kept my promise as an owner to meet his needs.

Remind yourself on the days that are a little extra busy or you're a little extra tired that you got your dog(s) knowing that they are beings with needs and that you are their everything and getting a dog is a promise to give them the life they deserve ❤️

If you are struggling with this, there are options to have their needs met through help as well! Some dogs are great candidates for dog walkers, off leash hikers (Stevie goes with a professional for a huge off leash hike on my really busy days and it's a LIFE SAVER!) and even dog daycare!

Check your local area to see what is available!

For my Kamloops BC friends, I couldn't recommend Mama Meg's Doggy Adventures enough and she does the hard work that is tiring out Steven up on the beautiful local trails with a big fun social pack for me on the days that it can feel like too much!

I know so many of you are dealing with the heaviness of loss over the holidays just like myself. I understand how debilitating this feels and the constant back and forth of happy reminiscing during holiday joy and absolute heartbreak. Today (Dec.24th) would have been Mayson's 10th birthday and it has been very, very difficult to navigate the holiday season especially without him.

Just a reminder that it's okay to hurt, it's okay to make time and space to openly or privately miss and grieve them. It's okay to feel lonely like no one else misses them like you do. It's okay that you are not radiating Christmas joy because things are still just....different without them. It's okay to cry and be sad.

I saw this quote this week and it helped me this year...

"It's okay to not be feeling very twinkly this year. Don't put pressure on yourself, just embrace each bright and glittering moment if and when it comes."

For those that need extra support there is a BC grief support free hotline as well as hosts online pet loss support groups for people just like you and I 💛
I will add this direct link below for easy access.
BC Bereavement Helpline

Please share for your friends and family that may need this as well because you never know who is struggling 🩷

Go easy on yourself during the hard days that you are absolutely allowed to have, no matter what other happy moments are going on around us. Through my traumatic loss I feel the new year (and my boys memory) has been calling me towards a new branch of care regarding end of life transitions and dog loss support and I'm looking forward to adding something like this as a service when my office is open in 2024.

Happy Holidays to everyone and Happy 10th birthday to my boy who I miss an increasingly incredible amount every second of every day. Throw some paws up there today bubba 🥹💛🎂

Every holiday season there are many exciting looking treats and chews marketed to include our dog we love so much in our holiday celebrations. However, the majority of these cheap treats are "gifts" that are actually wrapped up veterinary bills and long term health damage.

I could type a never ending list of products and brands I would not trust for my own dogs to eat but for now we will start with my top 2 of my Naughty List!

Helping to Prevent Senior Dog Slip and Falls 🐾

Many of us have slippery floors in our house and they are harder for our older dogs to maneuver as they age. Wood floors, tile and linoleum can be challenging for them and increases the risk of a slip and fall which can lead to serious injury for a senior dog. Even repeated “little” slips here and there can make significant changes over time.

Everybody has a different rules of their house but a lot of older dogs are getting up and down on some type of furniture a few times per day. Sometimes we don't notice that over time it's getting harder for them to get up and also harder to get down and that can be a recipe for disaster on their joints.

A runner, rug, yoga mats and/or foam tiles in high traffic and accident prone areas (top and bottom of the stairs and/or even grips on individual stairs, hallways, where they eat and drink) and especially spots where they get on and off furniture can make a big difference for your dog and help prevent injury from slip and falls.

New rugs and runners can be expensive but I have had lots of success with discounted $5-25 new yoga mats at Dollaramas and Winners/Home Sense and have used lots of the interlocking foam tiles from Walmart in a packs of 4 for $16!

If you have a smaller dog or higher furniture then a step stool or ramp should also be added. It shouldn’t be a big deal to have a bit of an eye sore like colored yoga mats around the house or a second hand 80's print ottoman as a step by the couch because it’s more than worth it to make things easier on them! 🥰

Senior dog safety over home decor preferences! 💜

Please consider the effects technology can have on our dogs who are so beyond our own level of perception! The things causing your pets stress and discomfort can be less obvious than the scented plug ins and fake scented detergents that we can see and smell. Consider things like this if you have a highly anxious dog or have sudden symptoms like above!!!!

PSA: We adopted our dog, Rowdy, from the shelter 5 years ago. He was already an adult dog, so we estimate he is about 11 or 12 years old at this point. I love this dog. He is the sweetest soul and my BFF. For the past week or so he hasn’t been acting like himself. He licked a raw spot on his foot. He was panting constantly. He was pacing. Sunday morning, the pacing and panting got so bad, and I was REALLY nervous that there was something seriously wrong with him. For 45 minutes, he panted like crazy and constantly paced back and forth. He was keeping his tail tucked down all the time. His ears were pinned back. He would not settle down and he wouldn’t eat. We tried everything. I ended up giving him a trazadone that he takes sometimes when he goes to the groomer. It seemed to take a little bit of the edge off, but not much. He still wouldn’t eat and still wouldn’t settle. I took off work on Monday so I could take him to the vet. We did bloodwork and x-rays. Knowing he is a senior dog, I was trying to prepare myself for the worst case scenario. I was glad to see his bloodwork was great except for some elevated liver enzymes. The x-rays showed he was a little backed up but no major issues. He got an anti-nausea injection and some Gabapentin to help with some tenderness in his back and to hopefully help keep him calm. When we got home, he was ok for a little bit, but eventually started pacing and panting again. We walked around the neighborhood for a long time and he used the bathroom a lot. He seemed pretty happy about that and was in good spirits until we got home and he refused to come back in the house. Every time I took him out that evening, he would hunker down like he didn’t want to come back in the house. When my vet called and I gave her the update, she suggested there may be some new electronic device in the house that was emitting a high frequency noise that is hurting his ears. We had just put new smart outlets in the house about a week ago. His pacing and panting were worse when the lamps were on, so I unplugged all the smart outlets. He stopped panting, stopped pacing, and ate his food. His tail was even up and wagging again. When I plugged the smart outlets all back in and asked Alexa to turn on the lamps, he immediately started panting and pacing again. My husband used an app to test the frequency of the smart outlets. It was off the charts. We've left the outlets unplugged for two days and have confirmed that it is definitely the smart outlets that are causing his stress and discomfort. He's back to being a totally normal dog now. I really thought this was the end for Rowdy based on the way he was acting. I am so thankful for Dr. Newell at BoonesCreek AnimalHospital for figuring out this simple solution. If your pets are exhibiting similar symptoms, you may want to consider checking your electronics first. I cannot express how relieved I am that he is ok now. 😭♥️🐶
