Hauling in the snow can be unavoidable at times - here are some things you can do to make sure you are staying safe!

- Clear off as much snow and ice as possible off of the the top of your truck and trailer. when snow and ice fly off the top of your truck and trailer, not only can it spook your horses - it can also cause an accident for any drivers behind you.

- Make sure to clear off all of your lights as well, to ensure that others on the road can see you and can anticipate your next move.

- Although our instinct it to close the trailer off form all of the elements, we have to ensure proper ventilation in the trailer to avoid overheating your horse.

- Don't feel pressured by other drivers. Your safety, and the safety of your horses is far more important.

Stay safe on the roads this winter! ❄

What is colic in horses? Colic is a broad term used to describe many different conditions that cause abdominal pain in horses.
The most common signs of colic in horses are: Pawing with their front feet, looking back at their flanks, curling their upper lip, rolling on the ground, kicking at the abdomen and sweating, straining to defecate, loss of appetite and depression, and a lack of bowel movements.

Although many things can cause a colic, some things that you can do to avoid it are: supply fresh water (in the winter your horse is less likely to drink very cold or nearly frozen water. Warm, tepid water encourages them to drink more.) If you are changing your horses diet, do it slowly and gradually. Too much of a change can upset the digestive system. Allow your horse to cool off before feeding them after they have been exercised heavily.

If you notice your horse is starting to colic, please call the clinic as soon as possible with the following information: which symptoms is your horse showing, how long has your horse been displaying colic symptoms, their current heart rate and respiratory rate, and their current temperature. You can call us anytime at (250) 374-1486.

What is PPID? Also commonly referred to as Cushing's Disease, PPID is when a part of the pituitary gland - which sits at the base of the equine brain and is the command center for hormones in the body - is working overtime resulting in a hormonal imbalance. This hormonal imbalance causes a variety of other health issues.

Research shows that 21% of horses and ponies 15 years of age and above are affected by PPID.

From now until October 31st, Boehringer Ingelheim is offering our existing clients free PPID testing for eligible horses. Eligible horses are chosen at the vet's discretion and must not have been diagnosed or treated previously.

Suspect that your horse has PPID? Here's what to look for:
• Change in attitude and acting more lethargic
• Delayed shedding of their seasonal coat, or not shedding at all
• Abnormal sweating
• Recurring infections
• Laminitis

If you want to learn more about PPID and testing for it, please call into the clinic or head to http://www.bicanadaequine.ca/ppid
