This week is International Veterinary Technician Week... and the month of October is recognized as Registered Veterinary Technologist month in British Columbia.

Did you know that your local vet clinic cannot run without these people? In addition to scheduling, and keeping the doctors on their toes, they are pivotal for patient care - your family members receive the best care and attention thanks to these technologists!

Our clinic employs Registered Veterinary Technicians - members who have not only completed a 2-3 year post secondary program, and passed a national exam, but have also remained members in good standings with the Columbia Veterinary Technologists Association - BCVTA (our registering body). These members have earned their degrees and accreditation where other members of the clinic may not.

Technologists are key in the clinic doing everything from drawing laboratory samples (bloodwork and urine), running laboratory tests, organize medications to go home, monitor surgeries, scrub in as a surgical assistant, take radiographs, perform dental prophylactic treatments and assist the doctors, schedule appointments, provide client education on a variety of topics... *deep breath*... Provide nursing care for hospitalized patients, hospitalize patients including catheter placement and medications, restrain animals for diagnostic procedures, among many other skills they use daily as they follow the veterinarians direction on anything else your pet may need while with us.

Our clinic could not run without our technicians - Tanya, Kim, Stephanie, Alisa, Emma, and Kristine.
You'll see, in addition to our regular work, we also had a little fun showcasing just a few of the skills we may utilize on any given day!

1. Emma doing a beak trim
2. Steph drawing a blood sample
3. Kim monitoring surgery
4. Tanya holding an exceptionally spicy kitten
5. Alisa taking radiographs
6. Emma flushing some rabbit tear ducts
7. Steph taking vitals (she said he had a heart beat)
8. Kim feeding a hospitalized patient
9. Tanya placing an intravenous catheter
10. Alisa performing a dental prophylactic treatment
11. Steph drawing a sample from the urinary bladder
12. Emma loving a patient while in our care
13. Alisa explaining some patient care to the owner

Prescription and Medication Pick-Up Updates:

Please note that we have been overwhelmed with the number of prescriptions needing to be filled at any given time. Effective immediately, prescription refills will require 24 hours notice prior to pick up. Please plan ahead to let us know you need a refill of your pets medications!
Any prescriptions needing to be refilled (or prescriptions sent to other pharmacies) will need to be called into the clinic with a minimum of 24 hours notice. If you choose to come by the clinic wanting a refill, we will still require 24 hours notice before we can fill the prescription.
We will do our best to have your prescriptions ready as soon as possible, but we cannot guarantee anything with less than 24 hours notice. Once the prescriptions are complete and ready for pick up, you will receive a text or email letting you know they can be picked up at your earliest convenience.

There are many options when it comes to pain control and ensuring your pets days are pain free. One size does not fit all - We have a variety of medications that can be used daily, as need, or even options that last monthly or longer. We can tailor your pets needs specific to them ensuring that they remain as happy and healthy for as long as possible - this includes ensuring that we do not cause further stress on their internal organs if they need to be on medications for long term.
We have medications that can be used separately, or in conjunction with others to provide the best multi-modal analgesia for your pet. What may work for one pet, may not work for another too, hence why variety and options are always available.

Reminder, if you feel your pet is showing any sign of pain (showing pain is NOT normal!), please contact the clinic and book an appointment with our veterinarians to further discuss options and come up with a tailored plan for your pet.

Dogs are much loved members of the family - they're often social and can be much more dramatic then our feline friends when it comes to showing signs of pain.

Our canine family members can show pain in a variety of ways including:
- General vocalization or increased vocalization with certain activities including howling, whimpering or grunting
- Self mutilation like overgroooming certain areas of the body, biting or chewing at themselves
- Self protection activities like limping or avoidance
- Changes to their activity level including restlessness, reluctance to move or do certain activities, hiding, and difficulty laying (and standing) or sitting in certain positions.
- Changes to posture such as arching their back or tucking their abdomen, or hiding their paws underneath them
- Changes to their coat including it being more dull or standing up in strange spots
- Facial expressions like grimaces, flattened ears, or panting
- Previously affectionate pets may become more aggressive or have shorter tolerances

If you feel your canine friend is showing subtle signs of pain, please contact us to book an appointment and have further discussion with our veterinarians - there are things we can do to help!

We want to congratulate Kim on achieving her Veterinary Technician Specialty (VTS) in Clinical Practice (Canine/Feline). Kim graduated from Thompson Rivers University in 2014 with both a Batchelor of Science in Animal Biology, and as a Registered Veterinary Technologist. Kim’s interests are in anesthesia and analgesia (pain control), and she is always looking to improve her skills!

This VTS designation means that Kim has demonstrated a wide range of clinical disciplines including lab work, surgical assistance, nursing, anesthesia, dentistry, nutrition and client education. As mentioned, this certification involves 3 years of continuing education, work experience, case reports and a rigorous examination process!

Kim is one of ONLY 2 RVTs in BC who have achieved this designation, and one of only 6 in Canada! We are so proud and glad that she is part of the ORAH Team!

Please help us in congratulating Kim on her success!!

Did you know that veterinary technicians can specialize in certain areas much like board certified doctors and veterinarians?
This is a higher level of recognition for advanced skills and knowledge in specific disciplines. These can include Anesthesia and Analgesia, Surgery, Diagnostic Imaging, Behaviour and even Clinical Practice.
The specialty disciplines for veterinary technicians coincide with the specialty disciplines for veterinarians - for instance, the Association of Veterinary Technicians in Clinical Practice is modelled after the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners, and includes the same three specific sub-specialities (Small Animal (Canine/Feline or Feline only), Exotic Companion Animal, and Production Medicine).

The Veterinary Technician Specialist (VTS) designation is awarded internationally to individuals who achieve a certification from a North American Veterinary Technician Association (NAVTA)-approved speciality academy. There are currently 16 different specialty academies recognized with that designation.

The VTS designation means you have proven an advanced level of knowledge and skill in a chosen speciality area. It involves over 3 years of work included ensuring their continued education, schooling and work experience are appropriate with a certain number of required hours, followed by collecting case logs and case reports, and passing a rigorous examination process. Specializing is NOT easy, but it can be rewarding.

The Academy of Veterinary Technicians in Clinical Practice has credentialed veterinary technicians that provide comprehensive, multidisciplinary care. They demonstrate a wide range of clinical disciplines within their species specialty including laboratory work, surgical nursing, general nursing, anesthesia, dentistry, nutrition, and client education.
Did you know that there is only ONE credentialed VTS-Clinical Practice technician in ALL of BC, and only THREE in Canada (throughout all the sub-specialities) prior to July 1, 2024? 😉😝

You might have seen her around for the last few summers... Although not a true assistant, Sydney is our 'Jill-of-all-trades' as her knowledge grows.

Sydney is going into her third year of veterinary medicine at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine in Saskatoon. She is so happy that her dream is now becoming a reality. She is so fortunate to be apart of the Oriole Road team every spring/summer for the last three years (even though the time spent is never long enough!). She enjoys working and learning from the amazing staff at Oriole Road Animal Hospital. When not neck deep in books, Sydney loves playing sports, making cards, being with her family and surrounding herself with as many animals as she can. She has two dogs, Dutch the shy rescue dog, and Mabel the crazy chocolate lab (named after her favourite camping lakes) that keep her on her toes.
