Everyone's favorite rubber ducky, the Cubaris pink racing ducky! Instead of a dark mid-section, the pink duckies (a color morph from the standard duckies) have a pink'ish/orange mid-section.
If you have standard duckies in your collection, it's quite probable that you'll eventually see some pink racers amongst your colony!

I just completed a crested gecko terrarium build (video) which will have my bioactive dream team to keep it clean (isopods and springtails). I'll also take you on a small tour of my other terrariums housing tree frogs and more geckos. All my terrariums are bioactive (all have pods and springtails).

This male Porcellio Magnificus is almost 2" long!
Felt like a little tank crawling on my finger.
Magnificus is a suitable name for this magnificent species.
For such a large species, they have a dainty appetite.
The majority of the time I find them hanging out on moss within their enclosure.

My isopods have disappeared!? Where are they and where did they go?

Fact: Isopods will avoid bright light and will hide in dark places. You will find your isopods under bark, logs, moss, and within the soil. If you only have a few isopods and want them to congregate to a spot where you can check up on them you can leave a slice of raw potato or apple on top of the soil overnight. When you lift it in the morning you may find your isopods underneath.

I keep all my isopods within a completely dark room about 23hrs of the day, only turning the light on when I'm feeding and checking in on them.

Species in the photo is called Merulanella Scarlet, I'm told that it's a variant of the Tricolor.

There are over 10,000 species of isopod worldwide, with around 4,500 species found in marine environments, mostly on the seabed, 500 species in freshwater, and another 5,000 species on land. The fossil record of isopods dates back to the Carboniferous period (in the Pennsylvanian epoch), at least 300 million years ago, when isopods lived in shallow seas.

The species in the photo is a land-dwelling isopod, one of my Porcellio Werneri, from Greece. Some call them the UFO of isopods due to their coloring and wide saucer-like shape. One of my favorite species.

Where's the clown car?

Armadillidium Klugii Montenegro "Clown"

This colorful species has a beautiful pattern of yellow and white dots on its shell with a red outer skirt. This pattern has given them the nickname "Clown" isopods.

The giant terrestrial isopod, Porcellio Hoffmannseggi.
A male seen here in the center of the image is longer but narrower than females, you can see an adult female in the bottom right, They enjoy hanging out under bark and on top of damp sphagnum moss.

Some of the smallest isopods "Trichorhina tomentosa" dawrf tropical woodlouse.

Not the easiest species to photograph, but I managed to get one or 2 decent shots... they are so tiny!

Dwarfs are some of the best isopods to keep in terrariums because 1) they make amazing clean-up crews 2) they reproduce by cloning themselves! 3) they won't bite your small amphibians and reptiles

Can you see the baby (mancae) that is in the process of molting?

Answer: The one closest to "mom". Isopods typically shed the front part of their exoskeleton first, then their back end. Sometimes they shed front first but always shed in 2 half sections.

These are my Cubaris Amber
Origin: Thailand

Always fun to see new mancae!!

This is what a complete diet looks like for isopods.
- Dry leaves
- Bark
- Old dry wood
- Moss (sphagnum/forest moss)
- Dried fish or fish flakes (or both)
- Yummm isopod food or other high protein powdered mixed format
- Veggies (sweet potatoes, carrots, zucchini, cucumber or Chinese cabbage
- A source of calcium ie: cuttlebone that is always readily available
Give your pods enough food so that it all get's eaten within 2-3 days.
Mix it up, some pods prefer certain things more than others.

KEEP THEM HAPPY AND FEED THEM WELL!

There is beauty even in death...
From time to time I see an animal from my colony parish. I set them aside to see if/and how their coloration changes over time. All of the following specimens have perished months ago. Notice the Porcellio bolivari (yellow isopod) almost looks like it's still alive. Many isopods lose their coloring shortly after they pass, either they turn a reddish color with some dark tinges, others turn grey with spots.

These 3 species are, Porcellio Bolivari, Porcellio Laevis Dairy Cow and Porcellio Magnificus.

If you are interested in what isopods eat, along with decaying leaves, wood, and animal waste, in this video I share my dry powder "Yummm" recipe.

My pods and springtails love it and I'm sure yours will too!

I supplement Yummm with chopped-up veggies like carrots, sweet potatoes, zucchini, or cucumber and always give them access to a calcium source like cuttlebone.

I'm no chef, and you don't need to be one to make this healthy recipe. Hope you enjoy the video :-)

Making your own isopod food is not only rewarding, it could also healthier than some store-bought options.Feel free to experiment with the recipe to see what...

HOW DO ISOPODS BREATHE?

Isopods are designed to breathe through a delicate exchange of gasses through the pleopodal lungs they have in their bodies.

Terrestrial isopods retained their gills despite evolution. Isopods have adapted to using six sets of pleopodal lungs that are connected to gills situated at openings along each of their pairs of legs. The breathing process itself requires that the gills be kept moist as it helps with gas exchange during respiration.

One of my Armadillidium Vulgare "Magic Potion" taking a stroll. Looks like it's got a black eye, but it's only a dark marking. It does have black eyes btw
It has yellow and black markings on a white body. A fun species that is active during all hours of the day.

What is an isopod???

Isopoda is an order of crustaceans that includes woodlice and their relatives. Isopods live in the sea, in freshwater, or on land. All have rigid, segmented exoskeletons, two pairs of antennae, seven pairs of jointed limbs on the thorax, and five pairs of branching appendages on the abdomen that are used in respiration.

I just finished a new terrarium build which will house 2 female crested geckos, a Dalmatian and a fancy.
I converted a wall-unit I wasn't using anymore into a Jurassic themed terrarium. Now.... my dilemma, which species of isopods to add? I'm leaning towards something a little more fancy than the Porcellio Laevis. I'm thinking perhaps Orange Expansus, Rubber Duckies, Zebras or Kluugi. Looking for recommendations. Thanks!
