Last look of the mountains in Transylvania as we made our way back to Bucharest on Sunday to catch our flight the next morning.

I am home now, with a heart full of love and memories that I will carry forever. I have made new friends, I have tried new foods, I have learned new words. I am content.

Spinning today. We managed to merge my suspended spindle techniques with Romanian hand spinning techniques for beautiful first singles. These amazing ladies picked up spindles and twirled them deftly as if they have been spinning their entire lives.

Arad in the morning at St. Mary’s Church, followed by a walking tour of Arad and the farmer’s market where I got to try local sheep cheese and speak about wool production with a local sheep farmer. We were also invited into a private home to view their private textile collection. Such an honour to share that experience. Rounding out the day was a drive through the Carpathian Mountains to get to our next stop at Sibiu.

“I help you close your suitcase Mum!” Mollie really doesn’t like it when I leave. She will be loved lots while I go off on this amazing adventure with Lisa ! And yes, there is a spindle ticked away in my bag for spinning in Romania.

Seemingly small choices can lead to huge changes in your life. Being a life-long spinner and fibre enthusiast led me to meet an amazing woman named Lisa Graves . We have been good friends for several years now. Lisa’s life changed when she chose to upload a TikTok video of her weaving on a table loom. That video went viral and she was invited to Romania to teach weaving in a country that is rapidly losing their textile heritage, and follow her newly discovered Romanian heritage. There was an opportunity for a spinner to join her in her travels, and she asked me. My life changed when I said yes.

Had the pleasure and joy of working with a new spinner on Saturday. We worked on woollen long draw and you can see the difference between her morning skein (white) on the right, and her afternoon skein on the left. Big improvements with a little focus and practice! So proud of her!

Sunday farm things. After years of not having an herb garden in, I finally got the essentials planted in containers for ease of weeding and controlling spread (I’m looking at you, mint). Pictured here is my rosemary. Love cooking with fresh home grown herbs and drying them for winter use.

Several years ago I fumbled two open dye jars onto some dry merino and stellina fibre. Eggplant purple and ice green. So angry at my clumsiness! Threw it all into my old slow cooker and walked away for a while. Let it dry. Slubby spun and knitted it this spring into a 3-ply chunky-ish winter hat. It is so warm!

Wondering what the five day spinning workshop in Haliburton looks like? These photos are from 2019 and showcase a little of what the new spinners accomplished. Looking forward to seeing new spinners this summer - we still have a couple of spaces! Wendy Bateman will be assisting in the mornings so there will be lots of info! https://flemingcollege.ca/continuing-education/courses/spinning.
