Let's start with the understanding that parasites are just gross. Now that we are all on the same page, we can agree that we all would rather not have to think about them, but occasionally our fur friends pick up some internal parasites that may not be obvious whether it is roundworms, tapeworms, hook worms, or perhaps external parasites like fleas or ticks. Yesterday we found a Coccidia sporocyte in a dog's stool - she was suffering from diarrhea for a few days.

Generally speaking, worms can either do nothing obvious to your pet's appearance and be symptomless or they might cause some unthriftiness with dull coat and perhaps a bit of a potbelly. One celled organisms like Coccidia tend to cause diarrhea of varying severity as with the dog above.

If your pet has not been checked for internal parasites for 1 or more years, the Fall is always a good time to do so and to treat accordingly. It might be that we need to prescribe medication should parasites be present or we can also offer an herbal parasite cleanse. For the latter product, please call ahead as we don't normally stock this item and want to know how many to order. It is a Kelowna company so turnaround should be quick.

With Halloween coming tomorrow, be sure to keep an eye on your pets. The commotion of trick or treaters and the doorbell ringing throughout the night can make them anxious. It’s a good idea to have them microchipped and to have their proper ID tags on.

We don't actually know this poor sheep's name but have christened her Darling. Her owner who is a client here brought her in today because she was attacked by some sort of animal (domestic/wild canid or juvenile cougar) but she did sustain a lot of big gashes around her neck and throat. We cleaned them all up and gave her some antibiotics and pain medication and we'll see what happens in the next 24 hours. This doesn't mean we're doing large animals now LOL!

If they aren’t already, speak to us about getting your cat microchipped.

Did you know? Dogs can actually see in colour, just not as vividly as we do. Their colour spectrum is just a bit more limited than ours as they see in shades of brown, gray, yellow and blue. It’s called dichromatic vision, and is similar to humans who experience red- green colour blindness.

"In Flanders Fields
In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved, and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields."
