How cute is this little man🥰 Mr Yogi had to come in last week due to getting some Spear grass stuck in his ear. Yogi was one of many cases this year that we have had to remove spear grass. Unfortunately, this obnoxious w**d can cause a lot of pain in our fur babies. The most common places to check is the ears and in between the toes. Thankfully Dr. Woodward was able to successfully remove them from Yogi’s ear! ❤️

We hope you all had a wonderful long weekend in the sun! Our doors are OPEN for our regular hours this week. We are also OPEN this Saturday August 10th, Dr. Woodward will be in the clinic 9am-4pm. Our locum veterinarian, Dr. Janis Hooge, is also in to support our wonderful clients this week.

Recently one of our technicians noticed that her own dog, Duke had an accumulation of tartar on one of his molars. She brought him in for an examination with Dr Marco Veenis and he noticed a *tiny* red dot on the tooth in question.

A red dot seen on a tooth can be an indication that the pulp is exposed. The pulp cavity of a tooth is where all the nerves and blood supply and nutrients are located, thus keeping that tooth healthy and alive. Therefore if you see anything similar to this in your pet, it is safe to assume they are in pain and discomfort.

Thankfully Dr Veenis was able to get Duke in for a dental procedure and remove this painful tooth.

The REASON for why Duke sadly fractured his tooth was because he was given bones to chew on. We know that bones or antlers or circular raw hide bones etc seem like a fun item to give your dog, however these are very hard on their teeth and can, and sadly often do lead to broken or fractured teeth.

If you notice your dog chewing on one side of their mouth or staring at their water bowl or pawing/rubbing at a specific side of their mouth, all of these can be an indication of tooth or teeth issues.

Our technician has been informed that moving forward she is not to give her dog ANY bones to chew on. Sadly the tooth he lost due to a fracture was a major tooth that helps to crunch and break down food. Moving forward his mom knows not to give any bones in hopes of preserving the remaining teeth he has.

First photo - Duke teeth pre surgery

Second photo - the tooth in question is actually on the bottom of that photo. Our dental procedures are placed upside down (therefore the “lower/bottom” of that photo is actually Duke’s upper jaw). If you look closely you might be able to see that little red region on his tooth. That is the sensitive pulp cavity exposed

Third photo - the extracted tooth now removed

Fourth photo - his tooth removed, you can even see the (now dark red/black appearing) pulp cavity that was exposed.

Duke has recovered very well!

Mr Jasper (Diva boy) is enjoying this heat wave the right way😎🌞

This is a reminder to keep your pets inside where it is cooler and where there is hopefully A/C! These temperatures can be life threatening. It’s important to note if you plan on walking your pups, do so in the early morning or late late evening when temperatures come down a bit. Avoid pavement or asphalt! Even our outdoor kitties sometimes need a break from the outdoors. Have plenty of fresh water bowls around your home! And please as a pet owner do not bring your pets in your car while running errands!!! Our cars can heat up to WELL above temperatures! We hope you all enjoy this heat in a safe manner and stay cool! 😎

Happy Thursday! We wanted to remind everyone for the May Long Weekend that we are OPEN this Saturday May 18th. Dr. Woodward will be in clinic from 9am-4pm. We will be CLOSED Sunday May 19th and Monday May 20th for Victoria Day. We apologize for the inconvenience, if any emergencies occur during that time please contact Fairfield Animal Hospital at (250)860-6550. We hope you all enjoy your long weekend.

Another reminder: even though this weekends weather is cooler than last weekend, it is still warm and muggy. Please leave your pets at home, especially your shorter nosed fur babies (brachycephalic breeds) as they are not able to efficiently cool themselves and they can, and do, over heat very quickly.

Have a wonderful upcoming long weekend everyone!

The weather is warming up fast in Kelowna. And with that we wanted to remind everyone how cautious we should be with taking our pets places with us. Do not bring your pets into the car while you are running errands. The cars can heat up extremely quickly and cause our pets immense distress. Leaving our pets in the car can cause life threatening issues. It is best to leave our pets at home inside a cool home with lots of fresh water. When exercising our pets it’s best to do in the early morning or late evening when temperatures are cooler and the sun isn’t out yet. Try to take them on walks along a creek/river or a shaded place, and to carry water on you not just for you but for your furry friend.
