As some of you may have seen, Bear Creek Park has put a "swim at your own risk" advisory up after concerns of algae blooms. Blue green algae can cause Cyanobacterial Hepatotoxicosis in dogs which is an acute and often fatal condition caused by swimming in or drinking from water containing toxins. Cyanobacteria are photosynthetic, prokaryotic organisms that exist in fresh, brackish, and salt waters.
Clinical signs include vomiting, diarrhea, weakness, collapse. Other signs may include anorexia, anxiety, nervousness, seizures. If you have been to this park recently and your pet starts showing any of these symptoms please book an appointment with your vet.

Tips to keep your dogs cool with the hot weather coming up!

Keep your pet well hydrated and avoid walks during the hot hours of the day.
Hot pavement can burn your pups feet, check the pavement with the back of your hand before taking them for a walk.
Cool, wet towels can help your fur babies cool down after walks.
Let your pups rest during the hot hours of the day to keep them cool longer.

Happy summer!

Learning is the most fun when you are in a beautiful place! Dr. Tannis McCarthy traveled to Nashville a couple weeks ago for the DVM360 Fetch Conference. She was able to attend a variety of sessions to learn more about current dermatology, cardiology, and dentistry practices, as well as behavioral abnormalities and treatment options. Continued education is key to help provide best practice medicine for our clients.

With the cold weather arriving, here are some tips to help keep your pets safe during cold temperatures!
- Animals are drawn to the smell & sweet taste of chemicals in car antifreeze, which can be fatal to pets - keep pets away from patches of discoloured snow
- Bang on your hood and check under the car before driving away; feral and outdoor cats often seek shelter within wheel wells and under the hood near engines
- Make sure your pets have proper shelter from the elements, or if possible, bring them inside during extreme cold temperatures
- Invest in paw protectants, pet booties, or slather petroleum jelly on paws to protect feet from harsh salt and de-icing chemicals outside
- Know the signs and contact your vet immediately if you suspect pet hypothermia. Symptoms include shivering, lethargy, cold skin, decreased heart rate, trouble walking or breathing, and dilated pupils.

3 safe ways to ring in the new year safely with your pets!

1. Be wary of fireworks . As groups gather and set off fireworks, it can be stressful for your pets and may cause them to want to flee. Having a safe space for your pet in a room with familiar items can help keep them calm. Having the TV or radio on can help drown out the loud noises.

2. Ensuring your pet has some form of identification. An ID tag, uptodate microchip info, or tattoo can ensure the safe return if the off chance of your pet running away.

3. Keep your pets away from food and alcohol. Grapes, onions, garlic, chocolate, and fatty foods can be toxic to your pets.

Have a happy new years and stay safe! 🐾

https://www.canada.ca/en/public-health/services/public-health-notices/2023/outbreak-salmonella-infections-under-investigation.html

An outbreak of extensively drug-resistant salmonella has been linked to raw pet food and contact with cattle in six provinces.

If you choose to feed your pet raw pet food, the following tips may help reduce the risk of a Salmonella infection:
- Always wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water after feeding, playing, handling or cleaning up after pets.
- Wash and sanitize any containers, utensils and surfaces that have come into contact with raw pet food before using them again. This includes food and water bowls, countertops, microwaves and refrigerators.
- Use dedicated dishes and utensils to serve your pet and wash them separately from other dishes and utensils.
- Store all pet food and treats away from where human food is stored or prepared and away from reach of young children. Pick up treats and food bowls when your pet is done with them.
- Raw pet food may need to be stored frozen or refrigerated. If thawing raw food:
- Keep your pet's food away from human food
- Place it in a sealed, clean container that will hold any remnants that may leak out
- Thaw only as much as needed
- Thaw on the bottom shelf of the refrigerator
- Do not re-freeze food after thawing
- Don't allow your dog to lick your face, mouth, or open wounds.

PHAC does not recommend feeding raw pet food to pets, especially in households with young children or individuals who have a compromised immune system, as they are at greater risk for more serious illness.

An outbreak of Salmonella infections linked to an outbreak in the United States is under investigation.

Mission Creek Animal Hospital

Nestled in the Mission area of beautiful Kelowna, British Columbia, is the friendly and innovative Mission Creek Animal Hospital. We strive to be your first and best source of health care information for your pet.

Mission Creek Animal Hospital, a small animal veterinary practice, was opened in January 1999, by Dr. Bruce Baptie. The clinic design and philosophy is the culmination of over 30 years of experience in veterinary medicine. The practice goal is to create an environment where our clients and their pets can feel comfortable and relaxed. Effective client communication is a top priority. The entire health care team works hard to help our clients feel confident and informed to make the best health care decisions for their pets. Every member of our staff participates in continuing education programs to ensure that we integrate new ideas and research with our years of clinical experience.
