UPDATE: OUR PHONES ARE NOW WORKING.
ATTENTION:
Our phone lines are currently down due to a storm last night.
Our text and email is available should you need to get in touch. SmartVet is also available.
Thank you for your patience and understanding!
It's hot π₯΅...who's sweating?
Not your dogs!
Dogs have sweat glands between their toe pads but they cannot sweat to cool down like humans do.
Heatstroke is a severe threat to our canine friends, especially the brachycephalic breeds and they require immediate veterinary care.
When itβs hot and humid avoid exercising your dog, always supply fresh drinking water and shade, never leave your pet in the car.
Enjoy that sunshine safely! π

"The Hammerhead Worm"
Although not a typical parasite for us this worm has been hitting the news recently and Dr. Scott Weese has a great write up about it!
Check it out!
https://www.wormsandgermsblog.com/2024/04/articles/miscellaneous/hammerhead-flatwormsare-there-animal-health-risks/
Another tapeworm species:
Echinococcus Multilocularis is a microscopic tapeworm. It is a parasite of foxes and coyotes, affecting up to 25% of the population in Southwestern Ontario, which has recently been found to be able to infect dogs, cats and HUMANS.
This parasite is small unlike the rest of its family, but FIERCE. π
Dogs and cats become infected by eating an infected rodent (dead or alive), such as mice, rabbits, and squirrels. Side effects in our pets are minimal to none, so it is easily missed. They do not produce βrice-likeβ segments in their stool. They DO shed the eggs in their stool causing a serious threat to humans if they are accidentally ingested.
What happens if a person gets infected with Echniococcus?
It causes cysts to form within the lungs and liver of humans. These cysts can grow so large that they are problematic for organ function, meaning echinococcosis is one of the MOST SERIOUS known zoonotic diseases.
So, what can you do?
β’ Just as you have been doing a lot lately, ALWAYS wash your hands after handling stool and before you eat or prepare food.
β’ If your pet eats dead things, or if you know there are coyotes or foxes around your house, DEWORM, DEWORM, DEWORM! π with a prevention that lists Echinococcus Multiocularis protection on the label. We can't stress this enough!
Thankfully, you can easily deworm your pets to eliminate the parasite and eggs being shed in their stool!
β’ It is also important to pick up after your pet outside, especially if you have children who may not be as good at keeping their hands off their faces.
DID YOU KNOW you can purchase one deworming product to cover all of the parasites we have covered?! How awesome is that?
One chewable tablet administered once per month!
It is as easy as giving a treat! π
For more info:
https://kinvet.com/pet-health-resources/pet-health-articles/articles/?rid=17273
If you have any questions about this, or any other parasite, give us a call and we can discuss the risks that may affect your own family.
What is long, white and produces βrice-likeβ segments when passed in stool? π€
οΏ½You got it! Tapeworms! οΏ½
Tapeworms also have hook-like mouth parts but they donβt use them to suck blood, they use them to anchor themselves to the intestinal wall.
Did you know that ONE of those βrice likeβ segments can contain up to 20 tapeworm eggs? EW! π€’
πΎHow do your pets become infected with tapeworms?
It is through the ingestion of an intermediate host!
In order for tapeworms to become infective they must initially pass through an intermediate host, such as a FLEA. In response to a flea bite, your pets bite themselves (to itch), ingesting the infected flea and the tapeworm then has the ability to mature in the intestine.
πΎCan I get tapeworm from my dog or cat?
No, but you and your children can get it from ingesting an infected flea. Flea control is KEY to managing and preventing tapeworms.
Thankfully, they are easily treated and prevented with a monthly deworming regime. π
There are a few species of tapeworms:
Dipylidium species as described above.
Taenia species requires the intermediate host to be a rodent (mouse, rabbit) not a flea.
Echinococcus species we will cover tomorrow π

Whipworms get their name for the WHIP-LIKE tail they have. Cool eh? π¬
They are another intestinal parasite that live in the cecum and large intestines of dogs and cause SEVERE irritation. They may be small but they are mighty! πͺ
A dog with whipworms experiences watery, bloody diarrhea, weight loss and overall weakness. π©
πEggs shed in the stool are extremely hardy, they remain infective in the environment for up to 5 years and can reinfect your dog within 10 days of being laid!!! SAY WHAT?!
Can you get whipworms? οΏ½
Thankfully the answer is NO, they are specific to dogs.
Can whipworms infect your cat?
There are species that can infect your cats, however, it is less common due to the cleaning regime of a cat. If they do become infected they donβt show many signs and numbers are quite low. Although, uncommon still a possibility.

Next up...
HOOKWORMS!
Hookworms get their name from the tiny hook-like mouth parts they use to attach themselves to the intestinal wall! OUCH! π©
These blood suckers consume large amounts of blood causing the possibility of anemia in our pets. YIKES! π¬
A dog may become infected when it accidentally swallows hookworm larvae, often by grooming its feet, or from sniffing f***s or contaminated soil.
Can I get hookworm? π€
No, BUT the hookworm larvae can bury themselves in your skin (through bare feet on contaminated soil or sand). They are itchy but die within a few weeks. Gross.
What can you do to protect your pet? Deworm your pet regularly and clean up after them appropriately!
Check out this article to learn all about hookworms!

Happy Monday!
It's time to learn about worms! How exciting?!
First up...
ROUNDWORMS! EW!
Roundworms are parasites that live freely in the intestine, feeding off of partially digested intestinal contents.
How can my pet get roundworms?
πΎSimply by sniffing or licking infected f***s, eating an infected rodent, such as a mouse and they are often passed on from "Mom" to newborn puppies and kittens!
This is why we recommend a deworming schedule for every new puppy or kitten.
Can I get roundworm from my pet?
πΎYes, humans are considered an βaccidental hostβ. The most common source of human infection is by ingesting eggs that have come from soil contaminated with dog or cat f***s. Roundworm eggs shed in the stool are not immediately infective. The stool must sit for 4 weeks before the eggs become infective larvae.
SO, it is VERY important to clean up after your dog or cat ASAP (including the litter box) and dispose of it appropriately.
Once roundworm larvae enter the environment they are hardy and can survive for long periods of time.
Practise good hygiene and wash your hands after handling any kind of f***s!
Be safe, and deworm your pets! One product can cover many of the intestinal parasites we are concerned about!

Heartworm season is upon us! π
How does my pet become infected with heartworm?
From a MOSQUITO! π¦
Heartworm is a LETHAL blood borne parasite transmitted by mosquitoes. When an infected mosquito bites your pet they transmit the infective larvae into their bloodstream, where they travel around the body for 6 months before maturing into adultsβ¦6 MONTHS! WOW! π
Once matured, the adult heartworms live in the heart, pulmonary arteries and surrounding vessels. They feed, then mate and produce millions of βbabiesβ.
Did you know 1 female heartworm can live as long as 5 years!! π₯Ί
These adult worms can block blood vessels, causing decreased blood flow, and wear on the heart and lungs. The lifecycle of heartworm is so long that once a pet is diagnosed, it is usually infested with worms.
Treatment is risky, costly and the quality of life of your pet is hindered.
So, what can you do?
That monthly dewormer you are using to cover all those intestinal parasites can also prevent heartworm! WOOHOO!
πͺ We can also perform a simple blood test to ensure your dog does not have heartworm disease.
Can you get heartworm from your dog? No! π
Can other pets get heartworm from your dog? No! π
Pets can only be infected by an infected mosquito!
As always, please give us a call should you have any questions!

Happy Monday!
We have had an overwhelming response for Frankie β€οΈ
Thank you all so much.
π We are pleased to say he has found a wonderful home!!
Now, our staff will begin our goodbyes π₯Ή we are going to miss our daily cuddles, head bumps and kisses β€οΈ
Ok friends, we need your help! π©΅
This smiling, handsome, complete LOVE bug is Frankie π and he is in need of a loving home!
A sweet couple found Frankie locally as a stray, in fairly rough shape and brought him to us to help fix him up π₯Ή.
He has spent the last few weeks recuperating at the clinic but he has never lost that smile π₯°!
He is now vaccinated, microchipped, neutered, FIV & FeLV negative and has been dewormed.
He has one eye - a genetic anomaly. It does not appear to bother him in the slightest.
He came to us full of mats, and burrs so his haircut is a little funky but in time it will grow into his gorgeous, long, orange locks! π
Frankie is roughly 2 years old, loves to cuddle and if you aren't giving him enough attention he will meow and let you know...or jump up on your keyboard while you are trying to work to make sure you know he is there π.
He is afraid of dogs (otherwise he would certainly have been an awesome clinic cat π). He loves to be around people and being inside has not bothered him.
He has been around other cats and did very well.
He has stolen the hearts of all of our staff. β€οΈ
If you think Frankie is a good fit for you please contact us at 519-396-2071 or email us at [email protected]
Please share! π©΅

It's October ππ and it's going to be fun! All month long we are looking for donations to support the Hearts to Paws program. 𧑠Donations may include new or gently used pet sweaters, dog booties, collars, blankets and leashes. These donations will help support pets in need. They will be made in to kits and sent to shelters in need. "Since 2017, Merck Animal Health has been providing pet sweaters to vulnerable communities across country β especially working with shelters that allow families without homes (including their pets) to stay together within their walls. In 2022, the Heart to Paws program expanded to include other pet care items such as leashes, dog booties, collars and blankets. Canadians were also invited to contribute by donating new or gently used items at participating veterinary clinics." Strider has made his donation π§‘π₯°!
