Home from a great show put on by Mid Western Horseman’s Society at Reach!

Today was another successful one with not only top placings but lots of good rides and more time in the saddle building confidence and connections with our horses.

Shout out to

Callie Harron & Tinsel Doll on putting it out there and doing the games classes! Bringing home ribbons and prize money their first time out. 👏

Michelle Harron & Champ trying the Horsemanship for the first time as well as Ranch Riding. Lots of great moments in each with a few homework pieces to work on! 🙌

Gord Timmerman trusted his young horse out with me at her first weekend show and we came away with 2 & 3 in Jr Pleasure and placings in halter. A big learning weekend for Missy and she has a bright future ahead! 😎

Erica Murray & Beau won the Equitation both days and they’ve worked very hard to connect in English as it’s new to them both. Such a fancy pair! They also had top placings in Ranch Riding 🤩

Jessica Mosley Cairncross & Maverick were 1st or 2nd in all their classes bringing home some nice 💰
These 2 have really got a special connection and still more goals to accomplish. 👏

Maxene Murray & Gracie didn’t make it out today but rocked their classes yesterday with 1sts in Ranch Riding & Ranch trail and top placing in Ranch Rail. Putting more pieces together each time out 🧩…an exciting future!

Duke debuted in halter today with a 1st in geldings. Still lots to work on for our riding classes but was exciting to get a 2nd placing $ for the CQHA Ranch Riding. 👌

Thanks to Lindsey Harris and Laura Todd for their help with keeping us ready to go!

Thanks to MWHS volunteers for all the hard work that goes into putting on these shows - it’s appreciated! 👏

Good day in Clinton at the MWHS show! Today was a day with lots of learning, growth, placings and personal bests!

In addition to the white board pic Erica and Beau were 7th in horsemanship (out of 20+) and we heard their names called but need to get the specifics still!

Started the day before sunrise and ended after - ready for a good sleep! 😴

We do it all again tomorrow 🍀

MWHS @ Reach - day 2 show wrap up

Mother Nature kept teasing us into thinking we could be outside but we only got a few classes done before more rain sent us in. Entries stayed strong though with 25 in Horsemanship, 18 in Ranch Riding and 14 in trail to end the day.

We had a great show but I wasn’t able to keep up with all the placings. So here’s some highlights:

Jess & Maverick - top 5 in Showmanship & Horsemanship

Erica & Beau - top 5 in Hunter Under Saddle & Equitation

Irene & Sassy - 5th in Novice horsemanship bringing home some prize money at their first show !

Lydia & Levi joined in the fun today with an 8th in Horsemanship (25 showed) and top 10 in Ranch rail & riding

Max & Delta - top placing in Ranch riding and ‘city’ trail

Max & Gracie - Top placing in Reining and Ranch riding.

Lindsey & Lilly - 6th in Novice Horsemanship at their first show. Big smiles for how far they have come!

Michelle & Champ - had some stellar moments in Ranch riding today but a bobble kept them out of the placings. I think they are “hooked” and we will see more of this team in the future with some new classes next show!

Jodi & Duke finished 5th in Ranch Riding and 2nd in ‘city’ trail (no ranch trail today). Lots of learning and lots of homework!

Always nice to catch up with friends at the Mid West shows. Thank you to the team behind the scenes who organize and run these shows. Very grateful for your hard work and dedication to keeping horse showing affordable, fun and thriving!

MWHS show at REACH - day 1

What a great day of showing! Started at 8:30 am and went till 9 pm. Lots of classes had 20+ in them. Such an amazing turnout!

Big congrats to Jessica & Maverick and Maxene & Gracie on their wins today. Jodi had a 3rd in “city trail” and 2nd in Ranch Trail. Fun to show both types today! Erica was top 5 in her classes too! As was Max with Delta. 👏

Michelle, Irene & Lindsey all conquered their nerves and entered the show ring for the first time today! All 3 came away with goals accomplished and smiles. Very proud of them!

Thanks to Laurie for her awesome help today - sure is nice having you around!

Hope to see the rain stop so we can show outside again tomorrow. Luckily we do have the big indoor here if things need to be in.

Sleepy horses and riders…good night 😴

Always fun helping these riders who really are DIY Amateurs. I only get to work with them once a month (at best) so their success is a testament to their hard work and dedication. ROCK STARS and true horsewomen! 🤩

This is the reality of horse training...preparing the horse for it's future is key. Developing riders into thinking, feeling horseman is the goal to make the relationship connection seamless for both horse and rider. And it's a never ending learning curve! Enjoy the journey...

Trainers don’t ride your (the clients) horse the same as they do their own…

In fact they can’t.

And if they do… they’re doing the horse and you as the client a disservice.

The best thing a professional can do is prepare that horse for the life, the rider, the environment they are going home to.

So if you want your horse to have a more ideal experience in training- there’s a simple answer- show up and get better. The better you get, the more ideally a trainer can ethically train your horse.

And the ethical matter here is getting the horse prepared for their journey ahead.

Early in my professional career this was one of the hardest pills to swallow.

I started and continued on this journey with horses to be the best horseman I could be and that meant riding the horse to the best of my ability.

But that did the horse and client a disservice early on.

Horses went home with a bit too much life and sensitivity for the owners capability.

A mentor called me and gave me strategic feedback as he was seeing this horses returning home. They were solid in the skills but a touch too much. We talked it over.

I wrestled for 18months with the idea of riding and working with my training horses in less than ideal ways for the sake of them being better for their owners. Dulling down their potential and ability so the human could be successful.

In my mind at the time- clients were paying me to do MY best and to give their horse the best experience possible. Fact is clients pay for us to do our best in getting the horse ready for them.

One of the greatest things I believe we can strive for in life is to be our best everyday. However, when riding horses for clients we are in a role where we have to decide to patch over that potential in a horse because it’d be too much for the owner, and that was extremely difficult for me.

My answer at the time was simply the owner needed to get better.

No doubt naive.

Over time I came to the realization that I could offer the horse the best feel I possibly could early on in their training - planting that seed of what could be - and then gradually prepare them for the less than ideal realities of life ahead. With that approach it’d then be possible for the human to tap back into that lightness and feel the horse possesses and experienced early in their training should they get to a point in their journey where they were ready for it.

At the end of the day as professionals the best thing we can do for the horses we are blessed to work with is prepare them for the life ahead.

For owners wanting their horse to have the most ideal training experience possible to suit their horse, the journey becomes improving your self just as a professional does on behalf of their own horses.

There will always be a need for trainers because the world is full of owners over-faced with too much horse.

I just hope we can all improve ourselves for the sake of our horses and inspire a few others to do the same along their journey. With that the lives of many horses will be much better.

Love this!

(𝑩𝒐𝒓𝒓𝒐𝒘𝒆𝒅 𝒇𝒓𝒐𝒎 𝒂 𝒇𝒓𝒊𝒆𝒏𝒅)

- When my instructor repeats to me: ′′Straighten your shoulders and open your chest!” He’s not just teaching me how to stand up. He's teaching me that in life we should always walk straight and face problems head on.

- When my instructor asks me to lower my legs and keep them close to the horse, he teaches me that in life we do not allow distractions and that little is enough to deviate from his path.

- When my instructor tells me "Too much hand, don't hang on to the reins! "He teaches me to give and not to take, with the greatest respect of others.

- When he yells and repeats endlessly: "Look forward in the direction you want to go!” He teaches me the importance of setting goals and never losing sight of them to achieve them.

- When I ask to move up or do more and my instructor says I'm not ready, he teaches me that in life you must always respect your rhythm and never skip the steps.

- When I fall and get back up, I learn that there are always setbacks, times when we back up, but the important thing is to get up more determined than before.

- If I hold my breath during a ride and he jokingly tells me "breathe! You are purple!” I understand that you have to let your emotions flow in order to get rid of them.

- When at the end of the course I am happy with the work done and my instructor says to me′ ′Well done, thank your teacher′′ I know he is not referring to himself but to my horse.

- Now you, you who are watching a rider pass in the saddle, keep saying that riding is not a sport because it is the horse that does everything. I agree. Horse riding is not a sport. It is a life lesson.
