Why steam hay in winter?❄️

When the days get shorter and weather starts to turn, many horses are stabled exposing them to dust and other allergens found in stables and barns.

You may have noticed your horse coughing or a snotty nose. 🐴 This calls for action because prevention is always better than a cure.

Haygain steaming is the only method proven to reduce up to 99% , mould, dust and other respirable particles found in hay.💚

All of the horses at Joe Stockdale's yard enjoy the benefits of steamed hay. Joe is also a fan of our ComfortStall flooring and Forager Slow Feeder.💚

Looks can be deceiving when it comes to stall flooring systems. 👀

Haygain’s ComfortStall, for example, looks like another flooring product from the surface and when viewed shortly after installation. Both feature a single piece top cover that is sealed to the stall wall. 🐴

But Grand Prix dressage rider and training facility owner Lauren Sprieser found out the hard way that the flooring systems do not perform the same at all. Read the full blog here on why Lauren chose ComfortStall 💚 https://www.haygain.ca/blogs/news-and-events/horse-stall-flooring-looks-can-be-deceiving

Can I steam my horse’s hay even though it’s freezing outside? 🌬️

Yes!

Haygain Hay Steamers attain their pathogen and mold-killing temperatures even in freezing weather. ♨️

Cold weather steaming does require a few precautions…

❄️Keep the chest and, especially, the steam generator inside, in a heated area, if possible.
❄️Prevent freezing by draining any residual water from the hoses, fittings and chest, after use. Dry off the spikes, manifold and chest after use.
❄️Be aware that colder outside and water temperatures require longer steaming times.
❄️Descale your boiler regularly to ensure peak performance in all weather.

For more details, check out this article on maintaining your steaming equipment in cold weather.

Throughout December Haygain have been donating a portion of all sales to World Horse Welfare. 🎁

The donations will go towards rescuing, rehabilitating and rehoming horses in need. 🐴 World Horse Welfare receive no government funding, they rely solely on donations and legacy's to keep their centres running.

Maintaining the public’s trust in our enjoyment of horses is a big picture priority for our friends at World Horse Welfare. 💚 Across many industries, this is called “social license to operate,” aka “SLO.” A peer-reviewed scientific paper, published in the journal “Animal,” spells out the public perception risks faced by the equestrian world and suggests trust-building actions that have worked for other industries. 🐴

We salute World Horse Welfare’s forward-thinking approach and their use of scientific research to identify the challenges and propose solutions. To support this effort and the organization’s wide scope of wonderful work, Haygain is donating a portion of all sales to World Horse Welfare throughout December. 🎁

Equine obesity is one of the many horse health challenges World Horse Welfare deals with regularly. That was the case for Bombay and his three yard mates. They came into the organization’s care when their owner became unable to care for them. 🐴

At World Horse Welfare’s rescue and rehoming center in Aderdeenshire, the ponies were put on a carefully managed nutrition plan. Bombay, a 5-year-old Cob, weighed an astonishing 610 kg (1,345 pounds) and needed to lose the equivalent of two full-grown adult humans to reach a healthy weight.🏋️

A restricted, low-calorie forage-based diet, alongside initially very gentle exercise, gradually returned the ponies to a healthy weight.

Haygain is proud to support World Horse Welfare’s work by donating a portion of all December sales to the organization.💚 This includes sales of Hay Steamers and the Forager Slow Feeder, both of which can help your horse maintain healthy weight. Steaming hay supports a forage-based diet – without the respiratory risks found in hay. And the Forager extends horses’ mealtimes, so even those getting less food can enjoy more hours munching away!

Our friends at World Horse Welfare help much more than horses. In Haiti, the organization partnered with a local charity to share knowledge with residents who rely on their horses, donkeys and mules for their livelihoods. 🌍

“Before, I was afraid of my horse,” said one participating owner. “I didn’t want to get close to it. During the training the agent showed me how to interact with it, how to convince it to be my friend. Today, the animal is much more profitable, because before I didn’t know how to take care of it.”🐴

In every context, a healthy horse performs better and enjoys a better life. Haygain is proud to support World Horse Welfare’s work. Every purchase made in December will spur a donation to this remarkable organization.💚
