Here's your courtesy of students from an Ottawa elementary school who were given an assignment to create new, animal-friendly versions of well known metaphors and similes. We're smiling over here at the KHS because these students did great work and because, well, some of them are laugh-out-loud funny. Thanks to teacher Christopher Neale and his class at Rockcliffe Park for all the work.

😸 A huge thank you to our wonderful foster, Stacy, who has been giving Jaz the care and attention she deserves! Jaz came to KHS as a surrender back in November, and thanks to Stacy, she's been in the best hands since December. From helping Jaz through her constipation to supporting her through dental surgery, Stacy has gone above and beyond for this sweet girl. We are so grateful for all the love and care you’ve given Jaz, Stacy. You truly make a difference in her life! ❤️ Thank you for being part of the KHS family and helping our animals find their way to happiness and health! 🌟

- Jaz does well with children and will be very motherly to them. She will be the child’s best friend as long as they respect her space 🐾
- Jaz does get overstimulated at times, therefore it is very important to read her cues when she shows she’s had enough 🛑

- Jaz LOVES to chat, you will never feel lonely with this girl around! 📣
- Jaz is on medication “as needed” if she doesn’t have regular bowel movements 💩

We are overjoyed to share that not only has Breanna T given Penny and Mavis their forever home after they spent over a year here at the Kingston Humane Society. But her kindness didn't stop there!

This week we will be looking at the 𝑲𝑯𝑺 𝑭𝒐𝒔𝒕𝒆𝒓 𝑷𝒓𝒐𝒈𝒓𝒂𝒎:

The KHS's Foster Program is designed to provide temporary homes for animals in need, mainly cats and dogs. However, while we can no longer accept small animals, we do have 6 lovely rabbits in foster care still waiting for their forever homes.

The program often places pregnant cats, orphaned kittens, and animals requiring socialization or medical care into foster homes. The time commitment for fostering varies; for instance, pregnant cats may need fostering for a couple months, bottle fed kittens need to be fed every two-four hours for several weeks, while adult cats or dogs might only need a few days or a few weeks of care. Each animal is different, as are our foster families.

The KHS offers guidance, veterinary support, and all of the items necessary to care for the animals, throughout the fostering period. Our goal is to ensure foster families have the necessary resources and information at their fingertips. Ideally, foster animals should have a dedicated space in the home, especially for mothers with litters.

We currently have 100 amazing foster families taking care of 109 animals.

Tiny is a 7 month old puppy who was surrendered to the shelter in January. She has been up for adoption for a month now, and still hasn't found her forever home. 😭

- Tiny is still working on being social with strangers, as she can be a bit shy to start!

🐾We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to Maya for opening her home and heart to Sophia. Sophia was surrendered to KHS in December 2024, and with Maya's kindness and compassion, she was given a second chance. Foster homes like Maya's are vital in helping us provide the care and attention these animals need, and we are so grateful for her dedication to Sophia's well-being. 🐰 Meet Kirby! 🐰 Hi! I'm Kirby, a 2-year-old friendly, large rabbit. I love keeping myself and my space clean, which you can tell by my pristine white fur. I enjoy spending time with my people, but I also appreciate my alone time. Working for my food in stacking cups is one of my favorite activities because I'm pretty smart, you know. I love being outside, playing with my toys, and grooming my stuffed animals. If I really like you, I'll give you kisses too! I have a few dislikes, such as slippery floors and being held. My ideal home would be a quiet, large free-roam carpeted area where I can be part of the action with my people. I'm good with quiet, small dogs, but I haven't been around other rabbits or cats. I would need proper bonding to see how I get along with another rabbit. I'm also good with older children who understand rabbits and know when to leave me alone. My temperament is very loving, quiet, and laid-back, though I do get the occasional nighttime zoomies! I'm curious and settle into new environments almost immediately, especially with rabbit-savvy people. When my foster mom went on vacation, I didn't hide and flopped right away. I currently free roam on several carpets in a large space with covered beds, boxes, and chairs to sit under or in. My favorite foods include romaine lettuce, parsley, cilantro, bell peppers, and bananas as a special treat. I eat vegetables twice a day with kibble and always have unlimited hay and water. I'd love to explore new foods in my new home. I have a few special needs: I prefer walking on carpet and runners but will slumber on cool tile floors if there's a carpet nearby. I benefit from Oxbow 100% Western Timothy Hay and love to playfully show you that I'm the boss by growling and lunging. I've developed good litter box manners and would likely do well with a friend. AFter 182 days, Sven the St. Bernard finally found his forever home.

Sven goes home

On May 29th, 2024, Sven arrived at the KHS. He was young and healthy but very nervous; especially in his kennel. Our animal care team is the best in the business and we knew, given time, they could get him ready for adoption. Over the next few months the ward attendants, the veterinary team, the dog walkers and the admin team all showed patience, consistency and compassion. They followed the plan to a "T" and 182 days later, Sven found his family. We'll miss his love of treats, his "time outs" when the walk had gone on long enough, we'll even miss all that slobber...but we couldn't be happier. And yes, we're crying but they're happy tears. Have a great life big fella.
