“Release” is just as important as the command itself.

This clip is from way back in 2013 (we’ve been training since 2002!)—but it’s still one of my favorites. My four German Shepherds are calmly holding a down, waiting for that magic release.

It’s a perfect reminder that teaching your dog how to stop a command is just as vital as teaching the command itself.

Does your dog lack 𝗦𝗘𝗟𝗳 𝗖𝗼𝗡𝗧𝗿𝗼𝗹?! Mine does! Here's an easy video exercise you can do with your pup too- practicing just that.

The important thing is to not allow him to get up and grab the distraction treats AND.... that he gets rewarded for his good calm behavior too! Hard work for an impatient young pup- because if Slim Shady can do this- your's can too:)

This video clip demonstrates "food sprinkling" and how it can help put your dogs mind in another place when stressful situations arise. It can help tremendously with reactivity, barking, anxiety ... Sprinkle before the dog escalates when he's just starting to think about it! The idea is it sends the dogs brain down a different path- a road less traveled. When dogs, just like people, get in certian thought processes, the mind automatically goes there- like into stress or reactivity. when the food is introduced, it causes them to think differently.
