Last week and couple of friends sent me a story from an Instagram influencer asking for advice on arthritis for her dog. Her vet used the term "age appropriate arthritis" which I'd never heard used before with dogs!

There are so many false beliefs about dog arthritis out there! We need to dispel them! Want to help?

🤔𝘈𝘭𝘭 𝘥𝘰𝘨𝘴 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘴𝘱𝘪𝘯𝘢𝘭 𝘪𝘯𝘫𝘶𝘳𝘪𝘦𝘴 𝘯𝘦𝘦𝘥 𝘴𝘶𝘳𝘨𝘦𝘳𝘺 𝘳𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵? 𝗡𝗢𝗣𝗘!

Sarah MacKeigan, Physiotherapist and Owner of Upward Dog Rehab & Wellness wrote this great review article on the topic of non-surgical management of dogs with disc herniations. (She's also Canadian!)

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗶𝗴 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗮𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀? Recovery without surgery happens more often than we often are told (nearly 100% for dogs with deep pain perception and about 50% for dogs without deep pain perception) and that many owners aren't given much (if any) guidance on home care measures. This includes bladder and bowel care, skin care and rehabilitation.

While urgent decompressive surgery is often presented as the most favorable treatment option for recovery, it may not be the most accessible and may not even be needed. 😮 There is evidence!

As we learn more about intervertebral disc disease (IVDD) we learn that there is much more to learn.

🙏 I am thankful for the opportunity to share my knowledge, experience, and the best practices and research on conservative management of IVDD in the October edition newsletter for the Animal Physical Therapy Special Interest Group (APTSIG) of the Academy of Orthopaedic Physical Therapy.

It's my hope that in writing and sharing this that more pet parents, rehabbers, and veterinarians learn of the options available for treatment and care of dogs with disc injuries. 🙏

🐾𝗪𝗲𝗹𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗡𝗮𝗹𝗮 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝗮𝘄𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗹𝘆 𝗙𝗶𝘁 𝗣𝗮𝗰𝗸! 🐾 Nala is a 2 year old Bernese Mountain Dog.

We started working with Nala back in the summer time. She'd been to the vet a few times and was limping on one of her front legs. Rest and anti-inflammatories weren't really making any difference. Why? No inflammation! What?!

We are happy to report that Nala has long since returned to daycare with her friends and is soundly walking on all four legs!

Shout out to Banshee who relaxed right into her assessment and treatment today! She's been treated a few times but is usually pretty tense. Today she took treats and happily chewed her treat while she had laser and bodywork done! Way to go Banshee!!!
