𝗪𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐑𝐀𝐀𝐇𝐏 𝐂𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐝𝐚? It's the Registry of Allied Animal Health Practitioners Canada.⁣ ⁣ 𝗪𝐡𝐲? Non-vet provided animal care is not regulated. In other words, there is no organization ensuring that someone who says they has certain skills has met a certain level of education. ⁣ ⁣ RAAHP is a voluntary registry but it gives registrants a means to show they have met particular education standards and carry insurance.⁣ ⁣ As an 𝐀𝐧𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐥 𝐏𝐡𝐲𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐩𝐢𝐬𝐭 (which is what I've registered as under RAAHP), I had to provide proof of my physiotherapy degree, proof of my canine rehab diploma and proof of insurance to practice on animals.⁣ ⁣ 𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐨𝐰𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐯𝐞𝐭𝐬 𝐮𝐬𝐞 𝐑𝐀𝐀𝐇𝐏? They can search for a registered provider OR check to see if someone they are considering working with is qualified (but absence from the list doesn't mean they aren't qualified).⁣ ⁣ #raahpcanada #ygk #kingston

"I've felt them all over and I can't figure out if they have pain" A systematic approach ensures we don't miss things when assessing your dog. What am I looking for when I'm evaluating a back? 1. Muscle tone/bulk ➡️ do they have normal muscle here? 2. Joint play ➡️ are the joints stiff or is there movement? 3. Is there heat ➡️ localized in one area? 4. Is there pain ➡️ a muscle twitch or dropping away? 5. Is there a side to side difference ➡️ where? And apparently Maggie loves it...any questions? #caninerehab #dogsofkingston #kingstonontario #YGK

Somewhere along the way laser and underwater treadmill became synonymous with canine rehab. The rest was treated as not necessary or even a frill. But that leaves a lot of problems without solutions.⁣ ⁣ Maizy had TPLO surgery for a torn cruciate ligament. Yes, she has laser, but these are the other things we did:⁣ ⁣ ✅️ Education - activities to limit/change, how to use hot/cold, flooring, safe exercise progression⁣ ⁣ ✅️ Manual/hands-on therapies - massage, joint mobilizations, stretching⁣ ⁣ ✅️ Exercise prescription - when to make exercises harder or easier, changing exercises when Maizy wouldn't participate with certain ones⁣ ⁣ ✅️ Troubleshooting - Maizy's recovery wasn't straight forward. Her owners needed an ear to help translate what the vet surgeon said at times. We had to adjust the program when Maizy strained her hip flexor. ⁣ ⁣ ❌️ Oops...guess we forgot to put Maizy in water!⁣ ⁣ #caninerehab #tplo #kingstonontario

I get it...surgery is expensive! But does surgery become MORE expensive when function doesn't return after "the problem" is fixed?⁣ ⁣ We KNOW rehab and physio is important after surgery. Human orthopedic surgeons expect it. No ifs. No ands. No buts. ⁣ ⁣ But we doesn't it usually not happen at all for our dogs? Usually there are 2 reasons:⁣ ⁣ 1. An owner is already in the red from paying for the surgery.⁣ ⁣ And⁣ ⁣ 2. No one ever told the owner they should seek it out.⁣ ⁣ And the research absolutely backs up point #2! If the vet team said it was important, most owners would find a way!⁣ ⁣ And on the flip side...what good is a repaired leg that the dog won't use?⁣ ⁣ #caninerehab #tplo #KingstonDog
