Did you know?
It is very important to keep your pets protected all year round. Kingston has become increasingly bad for ticks over the last few years. Ticks are even hanging out in your yards, not just wooded areas.

CASE OF THE WEEK!
Little Cleo has a skin condition that is called Eosinophilic granuloma complex.
The exact cause in cats is unknown. Some research studies suggest that, in most cases, a form of allergic response (hypersensitivity reaction) may be involved and is more likely in cases that are recurrent. Other studies suggest that the condition may at least be partially genetic or inherited.
The lesions may also develop in the mouth, especially along the gums and palate, or on other areas of the body. They usually appear as bald patches with raised areas of reddened skin. Common sites are the hind legs and the stomach. The lesions can be large and may be itchy, as cats frequently lick and bite at the affected areas.
Treatments for this include:
-Flea and insect control (Insect bites can trigger an exaggerated immune response in affected cats, causing or worsening clinical signs)
-Elimination diet trials or hypoallergenic diets (suggesting an underlying food allergy as the cause)
-Corticosteroids are the most common to control the symptoms. In some cases, they will need to be on steroids long term.

Cleo lives a happy life on medication and comes for bloodwork every 6 months to ensure that her organs are handling the long term medications well.

Potpourri, both in liquid and dry forms, needs to be used with caution around pets. The liquid variety is used around heat, which, if consumed, can result in burns from the corrosive chemicals. Cats are more susceptible to this form of poisoning, so watch for pawing at the mouth, vomiting, lethargy, difficulty swallowing, and abdominal pain. While the dry variety of potpourri may seem less risky, if ingested, chemical burns are still possible. Gastrointestinal upset and obstruction are also possible.
