Did you know Pets can get Lice?

Did you know that dogs and cats can get lice? Though uncommon, we recently had the sweetest dog come in for a skin rash and what did we find? See for yourself, what we saw, under the microscope (see video, attached). Lice are host specific which means they are only contagious to animals of the same species; dogs to dogs, and cats to cats. Lice are transmitted through direct contact between animals or by sharing beds and/or grooming tools. Humans can not become infected with lice from dogs or cats! Phew! ☺ There are two different kinds of lice: biting and sucking. This louse is a sucking louse! Lice and nits (eggs) can be seen with the naked eye. Lice are smaller than fleas and typically accumulate around the ears and body openings. Nits (eggs) are often seen attached to the hair – little white dots. Lice have a 2-3 week life cycle spent entirely on the animal. They only survive 2-3 days off the animal. Pets regularly receiving topical flea control from their veterinarian are protected from lice.
