Lady would like to talk about porcupine quills!
A face full of quills is very painful for your pet and it is ideal that they are removed quickly.
Quills are a form of straw like hair with fishhook like barbs on their ends taking hold of your pets skin tissue.
Ideally your pet is sedated making your pet more comfortable to have the quills removed.
As vets, we do not recommend the removal of the quills without examination and sedation as there can be secondary complications with improper quill removal.
1. They can be a source of infection or causes of abscesses.
2. Can migrate further into body cause damage to organs or joints.
Quills are serious and unfortunately not all pets learn from their mistakes. Try your best to refrain your pets from coming in contact with porcupines. But if they do minimize their movement, prevent them from rubbing their face and call your veterinarian as soon as possible.
Today Lady was sedated and had all the quills removed and has made a great recovery!
Try not to tango with any more porcupines!
