Warm weather means water adventures!

Here at K-9 Getaway, we are blessed to be on the mountain with a beautiful hidden gem just a few minutes down the road. I am looking forward to a summer full of days like this !

I am here to remind you of a few summer safety tips!!
👉 don't let your pup drink to much salt water and equally make sure they get enough to drink and stay hydrated !
👉 make sure their paws don't get burnt by walking on hot pavement for long periods
👉 make sure you have your flea and tick preventatives! Them buggers are bad this year
👉 be careful not to over work your pup in the heat, heatstroke happens fast and under the radar !

And most importantly, get out and enjoy the beautiful weather with your 4 legged companions
Life is to short to say no to that beach trip

I will admit, I'm not very good at posting to this page but I am still creating and renovating, and the main focus is your pups, not social media unfortunately. There just isn't enough time in one day to do it all!
So here's a big photo dump of all the fun times happening up on the mountain the last bit !

Scroll thru and find your pups !

2 pup yards complete 😍
Starting the 3rd one this weekend and I'm so excited. This 3rd yard will be entirely secluded for our beloved reactive pups that need their own space to be able to enjoy themselves. I cant wait for you all to benefit from this with your fur babies ❤️

Our dogs are individual, free thinking beings.

We need to respect this rather than focussing on "control" and "obedience".

By working with dogs to increase their confidence in making the right choices and recognising their individual preferences and personalities we can live in true harmony together.

It's been a busy week up here on the mountain getting ready for all our different opportunities for our community pups.
Here is a sneak peak at our layout, outside and some of the inside. I'm still working on the extra training/playroom of the left wing of the barn.

The rest of the fencing (teal blops) will be up this week.
Aside from boarding and training,
💚💚💚I am partnering with Sniffspot, which means you will be able to rent out a section of the yard and come with your dog for some off leash time. Friendly or reactive, one or multiple, you will be able to come relax with your family. If you haven't heard, check them out! More details coming this week.💚💚💚

💥Boarding and Dayboard details coming this week

As spring rolls in, it's important to remember all nature's critters who will be reappearing !

A little word about porcupines!

Porcupines are a part of life in Nova Scotia, but there are a few old wives tales about these gentle creatures that just won't go away. So today we're going to dispel a few myths!

Most popular myths about porcupines and quills:

1) A porcupine can aim and shoot quills.

Porcupines CANNOT shoot their quills. Contact has to happen, either with the porcupine itself ( alive or deceased) or very occasionally, with a few quills on the ground. There is no malice involved ...if a dog gets quilled it is because it touched someone who did not want to be touched.

2) A dog will learn from getting quills, especially in the face.

This one is a bit trickier, because it depends on the dog. Your dog *might* learn, but they also might not. The higher the prey drive, the less likely they are to remember in the moment.

3) Cutting the tips of quills will deflate them, allowing them to fall out naturally. Or, cutting them near the skin will make them fall out.

STOP!!!!! PUT DOWN THOSE SCISSORS!!!

Cutting the quills does absolutely nothing except make them much harder to remove.
Quills are barbed: this means their natural trajectory is to go forward, not backwards. If you cut them, it may certainly look like they fell out but this is only because they have now slipped fully under the skin or into tissue. They are still there - but now they are a much bigger problem. Never cut them and do not believe people who tell you to do so.

4) Porcupines quills are uncomfortable but not dangerous.

Untrue. Porcupine quills in the chest, abdomen, or quills that have been swallowed can all be life threatening. As stated above, due to design a quill naturally moves forward. Quills in these spots can migrate to vital organs causing death.

A few other points of note :

It's easy to say " A dog should be on a leash" but a lot of quill accidents happen in the dog's own yard, often late at night or early morning. Porcupines can easily climb fences or trees with overhanging branches.

Porcupines are here all year but become a lot more active in the spring. April, May and June are busy busy busy with quill removals - these can vary from a dozen quills to the nose to thousands of quills all over.

Pulling quills is painful for the dog and even the gentlest and kindest will object to more than a few being removed - not unreasonably! Sedation is used for both comfort and safety.

And it's not only dogs...curious cats and even horses will get quills now and then. Many animals just go over for a little friendly sniff and then...oops.

And finally : your veterinary team will do everything they can to remove all the quills, but due to many factors some may be left behind. Once the quills have moved under the skin or into tissue, there is simply no way to find them. If they can still be felt a small incision can be made to extract them, but often they cannot be seen, felt or found. It is not uncommon for quills to slowly migrate and then emerge weeks or even months after the initial incident.

How can you prevent hidden or " buried" quills? You might not be able to, but the best course of action is seek veterinary care quickly - the longer they stay in and the more your dog moves, the more likely it is that some quills will slip under the skin. This is especially true if your dog is very agitated and upset or if you try to remove them without proper technique.

So happy spring! Be sure to do a quick check of your yard before letting your dog out at night or early morning, be aware of your surroundings on walks, keep practicing good recall and remember...it's not anyone's fault, especially the porcupine! 🙂

If your looking for a small scale daycare program for your pup, Buddys Place is where to look.

Kelsey is a long time friend of mine, we go back to our scrub days as young CCA's, to now being mothers and spouses. It has always been a dream of hers to create a safe space for pups to come play and she has done just that ! And who knows, I might be lucky enough to get to snuggle your pups there too as I've been helping her out with daycare weekly ! 😉🧡

We hope to help one another out with caring for our community's furry companions. I have lots of space to offer towards her limited boarding availability as we grow her daycare program, and shes got so many new pups for me to groom! We have fundraiser ideas for our local rescues, fun summer events and so much more !!

Yall better keep an eye on us crazy dog ladies 😂

I'd like to take a moment to reminisce on the first business adventure Erin and I created.
I was just a groomer in a shop before Covid became a thing and shut down half the world.. including the shop I was in. I took a chance and created my own doggy daycare and groom shop fall of 2020. We made it a few years through many questionable moments, before life had other plans for me and we sadly closed the Parlour doors.

These pups are the drive behind the determination to one day be able to do this again.🤎 The love, the energy and the trust and respect I have received over the years from my pups is the best reward. The relationships Ive built with pups&parents have been so rewarding.

To my parents, I hope these pictures don't make yall cry, because I'd be lying if I said I didn't 😂
