ANSWER is: A.) Botfly 🪰
This parasite was recently removed from a 3-week-old kitten by Dr. Paine.
Botflies are also known as Cuterebras.
Adult botflies are big and fuzzy (similar to bee) and lay their eggs near animal dwellings like barns, burrows, etc. (this kitten was rescued from a nearby barn)
As these eggs hatch and larvae emerge when a potential host is close.
The larvae will grab on to the animal’s hair coat and will try to enter the animal's body through any opening (like the nose, mouth, ear, or anus).
Once inside, they migrate through the body until they arrive in the tissues under the skin. They will then make a small hole so they can breathe, continue maturing, and eventually emerge and fall to the ground where they become pupae and then adult flies. The small hole in the skin is what we notice on an exam when cuterebra is present and is often found around the head, face, and neck area.
On our kitten friend, the cuterebra had entered the orbital cavity.
We are so happy to report that she is healing very well and recovering from her parasite infection! 🙏 We will post an update on her soon.
