Vet med fun answer.

Question was: What do you think this picture is of ?
HINT was: it is parasite related!๐Ÿฆ

ANSWER is:
C.) Tapeworm

This is a scanning electron micrograph (SEM) view of the head of a tapeworm.
An adult tapeworm has a scolex (head), a short neck, and a strobila (segmented body) formed of proglottids.
Adult tapeworms can measure up to 4 โ€“ 28 inches in length. As it grows inside the intestinal tract, these segments (proglottids) break off and pass in the stool. Each segment is about the size of a grain of rice.

Tapeworms anchor themselves to the inside of the intestine of their host using their scolex, which has hooks, suckers, or both. They have no mouth, but absorb nutrients directly from the host's gut. ๐Ÿ™€

Did you know that most internal parasites are intestinal worms and single-celled organisms that can live in the intestines of dogs and cats? ๐Ÿ™€๐Ÿ™€๐Ÿ™€

Common intestinal worms include: roundworms, hookworms, whipworms, and tapeworms. Common single-cell parasites are coccidia and giardia. Some of these parasites can occasionally infect humans as well.

Roundworms are the most common intestinal parasite in dogs and cats in the world. Animals with roundworms pass the infection to other animals when the worm eggs develop into larvae and are present in the animal's f***s.

Tapeworm infections are caused by fleas and rodents! Fleas and rodents ingest tapeworm eggs found in the environment, which then hatch into larvae and live inside of them. After a cat or dog ingests a flea or rodent carrying the tapeworm larvae, adult tapeworms develop and live in their small intestines.

Coccidia and giardia are two species of protozoa that reproduce in the intestines of infected animals and shed their cysts (microscopic egg-like structures) into the environment through the infected animal's f***s. These cysts can survive in watery environments and soil, long enough to be incidentally consumed by other animals or humans. They become infected by drinking contaminated water, eating contaminated grass, or just walking through (or sitting or lying on) contaminated soil and then grooming themselves.

Is your pet experiencing diarrhea, vomiting, weight loss, scooting, and having a poor hair coat? If yes, they could have a parasitic infection. ๐Ÿ™€๐Ÿ™€๐Ÿ™€
A veterinary appointment is recommended to treat any of these symptoms. Having veterinary care for your pet will decrease their discomfort and the risk of intestinal damage from an infection.

It is also important to remember good sanitation habits as well as good hygiene when cleaned up after our pet. This will reduce the risk of infection to other pets and to humans!! ๐Ÿ™

Internal parasites are something we should be concerned with and do our best to prevent them from our pets. If you have questions regarding parasite treatments or preventions, give us a call at 613-384-8818 or email us at [email protected]. ๐Ÿพ

Does your pet have itchy, inflamed ears? Pesty ear mites may be to blame! ๐Ÿ™€

These very tiny parasites can cause significant discomfort, our beloved.
Ear mites also cause excessive production of black/brown wax. The combination of wax and dried blood creates the look of coffee grounds in the ears. (see photo)

If you see any substances in your pet's ear, they need to be seen by a veterinarian.
Call us today to book an appointment with our veterinary team and stop these parasites in their tracks. ๐Ÿพ

08/06/2024

Ear mites, commonly known as Otodectes, are a type of microscopic parasite that can live in the ear canals of our beloved pets. These mites feed off skin oils and ear wax and cause a lot of discomfort & irritation in their ears.

Signs your pet may have ear mites include:

๐Ÿพ scratching and itching at ears or neck area
๐Ÿพ head shaking
๐Ÿพ trauma/scabs to the external ear itching
๐Ÿพ Skin redness & inflammation
๐Ÿพ Black/brown debris in the ear canals

Ear mites are most commonly seen in our indoor/outdoor cats. However, they can affect ferrets and are rarely seen in dogs.
They can spread rapidly and can be transmitted from even brief physical contact with an infected animal.

If you have a concern about your pet's ear, call us at the clinic to discuss parasite prevention. ๐Ÿพ
