last delivery day completed 🌱 now it’s time to say bye in-person 🤗 tomorrow it’s the last day of our farm store in Kingsville and we hope to see you there!
We’ll be open at 12 pm for the last harvest of our microgreens and final sales of all remaining superfood and beverages, merch, and other cool products, including many of the store’s equipment, furniture, decor, supplies etc ✨
“there’s no equivalent to what you guys do” ✨those were the kind words of a dear customer that came into the store yesterday.
We reflected a lot about it. We always push hard, whatever we put our minds to. That’s innate to us and consistently applied to all we do. So we know that whatever we create inherits our high expectations.
But it’s the market perception that validates it or not, it’s you. It’s also you who inspired us to continuously improve in every aspect, it’s you. It’s you who deserves the best and nothing but the best, and you should always demand it, because it’s you, and you’re worthy.
Your feedback has been positively overwhelming as we approach the end of this chapter, and yes, we know that there’s nothing equivalent to what we were/are creating, because that’s what we aimed for.
But we also know there’s no equivalent to you. It’s all for you.

The month was November of 2021, that’s when we sent to our subscribers a pack off the most delicious gluten-free bagels we ever had - everything bagel from Mary's Mindful BakeHouse Ltd. 🥯
Not only it was a huge hit among our subscribers, once we started selling them at the store, we’d have people that don’t need to eat gluten-free food, coming in to buy them, that’s how good they are!
On top of all the delicious food, Mary’s Mindful BakeHouse team makes, Mary is a talented, intelligent, and kind businesswoman. She also manages a beautiful family and in our opinion, she’s a wonderful role model for our communities.
Mary used her technical background to come up with recipes to solve her own health issues (mad scientist vibes 👩🔬), and ended up turning it into a successful business that we were proud to have as part of our journey.
I’m sure most of you are their customers (or will become soon) so you know what I’m talking about 😉 we all shared yummy recipes using her bagels (keep swiping) and we can’t wait to see what they’ll do next 😃
Thank you, Mary and your entire team, for all the amazing work you do, for solving a problem, and for inspiring others along the way.
September 2021 was the month we sent a bag of freshly roasted coffee from our neighbours from across the street
It was a big hit ☕️who doesn’t love coffee? (except for Alvaro 😒, although he sure ate his fair share of quiches and cookies there 😂).
Their fresh cup of coffee also saved many of our early mornings ☕️ and I’m sure we’ll continue to bump into many of you there 😉
July 2021 - our second surprise local taste was a pizza dough made by a young local entrepreneur who learned her cooking skills with her situ (grandma in Lebanese), which became the name of her company 😊
It was a pleasure getting to know Emelia and her wonderful family, who are all an integral part of Kingsville’s community.
She was 16 back then and she’s in college now 🥹 we even got the pleasure of having her younger sister, Sophia, working with us for a few hours before we decided to close.
After sending her pizza dough as a gift, we continue to sell them at the store, and customers would loyally come back for them!
Who remembers or still buys delicious and practical pizza dough?

Our first surprise local taste was an exotic mushroom from 🍄 back in June 2021.
Right after we launched ortaliza we met Denis, an individual that if you know, you know 😊 his long time passion for mushroom (probably genetic) is contagious and he got us all hooked to a completely new world in terms of food, nutrition, and fungi.
He overflows energy and creativity (which can sometimes be misunderstood) and he’s been out there, putting in the work for what he believes the world should look (or taste) like.
It started as a surprise gift and soon after it became a subscription add-on (with a break in between as he was also figuring out life and business during a turmoil).
Our customers always loved their mushrooms and we hope they’ll continue to support him and his team 😊

It’s been a pleasure to get to know you and your beautiful family, see you becoming a father, facing life’s hardships, and expanding your business. And thanks to your entire team, we feel very lucky to have got to know them as well, and have them as part of our journey as well.

Let’s kick off the recap series by talking one of the most joyous part of running our subscription program 👉 our SURPRISE LOCAL TASTE initiative 🤩
Every month, we sent a surprise gift to our subscribers as part of their subscription program. It was usually something edible or food-related, and always local.
Ortaliza was born in the middle of the global pandemic, so right from the start we looked for ways to do our part and support local businesses and our suppliers, while adding value to our subscribers by exposing them to a new product/new business.
In that process, we got to know not only amazing products, but more importantly, the incredible and passionate people behind them. Some of which became friendships and relationships that we hope to carry with us forever.
We’ll continue to support and cheer for them from the sidelines 😍
The initiative started in June of 2021 and we’ll share some of them with you now or remind you of them, as you probably received their products these past two years 🤗

SWEET POTATO TOASTS🫶🍠🌱
No these don’t replace our classic toasties or bread but they’re such a fun and healthy twist + a great way to get in some veggies!
You’ll need:
2 large sweet potatoes baked, cooked & cut into slices like so 🍠
Hummus - I used organic beet hummus💜
Cooked lentils & onions
Pink salt
Ortaliza microgreens of choice🌱
I recommend cooking your potatoes in advance and allowing them to cool in the fridge. Once you’re ready to make them, place them in the toaster for 5 minutes to toast.
Top them off & enjoy.
I’ll be making sweet versions next time for sure🙌

How short is the window to harvest microgreens? 🌱 Microgreens, as you know by now, it’s not a type of plant, it’s a stage of a plant’s life cycle. At that stage, cotyledons, which are usually two, heart-shaped, embryonic leaves, have fully developed, and the first true leaf might or might not (it depends on the varieties and growers decision), have emerged. Took some time off to check out fun local places including a barn yard sale and 🌱 tasting at @ortalizafarms before heading to two of the hosts of today’s W.E. ❤️ LOCAL OPEN FARMS by Tourism Windsor Essex 🍇 we had a great time at Oxley Estate Winery where we went to a guided vineyard tour, did some colouring, and drank some kid-friendly wine 🍷😂👩🌾 then headed to The Farm House Market for snacks, more colouring, and ready-to-go dinner made by them 😋 such a lovely family and business!

Another amazing idea from @recipes_by_rosa to brighten our spring days 🌸🌼🌱 ・・・ Roasted Asparagus Salad with a lemon vinaigrette. SAVE THIS RECIPE! You’ll definitely make this salad this summer. Perfect as well for a Mothers Day luncheon. Ingredients I used: * 1 bunch of asparagus, trimmed * 2 tablespoons olive oil * Salt and pepper * 1 romaine heart greens * 1 avocado, sliced * 1/4 cup of chopped almonds * 1/4 cup crumbled feta cheese * mizuna microgreens @ortalizafarms For the vinaigrette: * 1/4 cup olive oil * 2 tablespoons freshly squeezed lemon juice * 1 tablespoon honey * 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard * Salt and pepper to taste Instructions: 1. Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C). 2. Arrange the asparagus on a baking sheet, drizzle with olive oil and season with salt and pepper. 3. Roast the asparagus in the oven for 10-15 minutes, or until tender and lightly browned. 4. While the asparagus is roasting, prepare the vinaigrette. In a small bowl, whisk together the olive oil, lemon juice, honey, Dijon mustard, salt, and pepper until well combined. 5. In a large bowl, toss together the mixed greens, avocado, sliced almonds, and feta cheese. 6. Once the asparagus is done, add it to the salad and drizzle with the lemon vinaigrette. 7. Serve immediately and enjoy! such a yummy recipe idea 🤩 by @fueledbyroots ・・・ Jazz up your perogies with a healthy green pea and zucchini sauce 💚 This silky, creamy and deeply flavoured green sauce will have you puzzled on why it took you so long to discover. This sauce is so healthy, full of green veggies like zucchini, spinach, green peas and fresh basil. It’s vegan, nut-free, high in fiber and protein. 4 Servings Ingredients: 1 tbsp olive oil 1 small onion, chopped 4 garlic cloves, chopped 1 zucchini, chopped 1 cup spinach 1.5 cups frozen green peas ½ tsp salt ⅓ cup nutritional yeast ¼ cup fresh lemon juice 1 cup plant milk (soy or rice milk, preferred) ½ cup fresh basil (I used basil microgreens from @ortalizafarms ⅓ cup hemp seeds 1 tsp miso paste (optional) ⅛ tsp black pepper Instructions: Heat olive oil in a medium pan. Once hot, add the chopped onion and cook for 3-4 minutes then add the garlic and cook for another 1-2 minutes. Next, add the zucchini and cook down for about 7-minutes or until the zucchini is cooked. Stir in the spinach and green peas until the spinach is wilted. Remove from the heat and set aside. In a blender, add the cooked veggies and all the remaining ingredients. Blend until completely smooth.
