Fish might seem like a low-effort pet - and once your aquarium is set up properly, they can be! Knowledge about pet care has evolved over time, even for the classic “easy” pets like goldfish. Setting up your aquarium for long-term health might take more effort at the start, but it means less intensive maintenance in the long run❤️🐠
The number 1 priority is making sure the nitrogen cycle in your aquarium is working properly! This means that 2 kinds of helpful bacteria are living and thriving in your tank; one kind that turns fish waste into nitrites, and one that turns nitrites into nitrates. Since no one wants to be swimming around in fish poop (and high levels of nitrogen in the poop can burn gills and even kill fish!) it’s necessary to make sure both kinds of bacteria have colonized your aquarium.
To help kick-start the nitrogen cycle and make your tank safe for its inhabitants, bottled bacteria can be added to the water. Partial water changes, where decor and fish are left in the tank but some of the water is removed, will ensure that most of the good bacteria are kept right where you need them. Adding live plants, like java ferns or java moss, will give these bacteria places to live… Plus, the plants themselves will soak up some of the nitrates left over, easing the burden on your water filter! They’ll need to be trimmed occasionally, but they’ll lessen the frequency of your water changes and give your fish places to hide, or even a snack to nibble on.

We’ve been having some of the hottest days on record. Unlike humans, dogs and cats can’t sweat to keep cool. Certain breeds - like Bulldogs, Frenchies, Boxers, and other short-snouted dogs - are especially prone to overheating, which can lead to very dangerous states of heat exhaustion. It’s doubly important to make sure they stay cool.
Cooling bandanas and vests are a simple way to help your dog manage the heat: simply soak them in water, wring out the excess, and put it on your dog. Water will naturally pull heat away from the dog’s body, and as it evaporates it cools even further.
Cooling mats work much the same - water is naturally heat conductive, so it’ll draw heat away from your pet’s body. All they have to do is lie on it!
Make sure you and your pets stay hydrated, and have fun!❤️🌞😎
