Introducing our newest social media segment: Tuesday Training Tips! ⭐️
While we love working with and educating training clients in both private and group settings, we also want to share some of our knowledge with you, our followers! With that in mind, we will be sharing weekly tips and tricks that you can practice with your pups at home in order to improve your relationship with them, work through challenging/unwanted behaviours, and all around improve their quality of life!
This week we are focusing on the importance of eye contact 👀
Eye contact from your dog can mean many different things. Firstly, it is a polite way for them to ask your permission - think of it as the doggy version of “please and thank you”. Secondly, your dog being able to give you eye contact, especially in exciting situations, signifies that they are in a calm state of mind. And lastly, eye contact from your dog lets you know that you are their main focus, which is very important in distracting environments.
With eye contact being such an important and effective communication tool for you and your dog, it is important to try and achieve it as much as possible. BUT we also want to be sure our dog is giving it willingly, rather than you constantly having to ask for it. Going back to our earlier analogy, you don’t always want to have to tell your kids to say “please and thank you”. You want them to do it regularly on their own, and the same goes for your dog giving you eye contact!
So, the next time you go to give your dog something (food, a treat, a toy, access to the backyard), put them into a sit and wait silently and patiently for them to look at you. Once they do, give them the reward right away. If you start doing this regularly, you will be amazed and how much and how quickly your dog starts to give you eye contact willingly. 👏🏻
