In our opinion, car chasing is one of the most dangerous behaviours a dog can have (outside of aggression). A behaviour like this can get a dog seriously injured or killed, and humans traumatized who are involved. The one time a dog that displays these behaviours gets off the leash, runs out the front door, or pulls a leash through an owners hands could be life or death.
Now comes the question, why do some dogs chase cars? Because it works ! Just like chasing a squirrel, bird, cat, bicycle, basically anything that moves, it is highly reinforcing to dogs.
Car chasing for Iona is an OCD behaviour, but it is also fun for her! Every car she chases leaves quickly, and every time the behaviour is reinforced. This can be predatory behaviour in some dogs, and in Iona's case also a herding behaviour.
When Iona is in this mental state she cannot see or hear anything other than what she is locked in on (the cars). This means she will not perceive us talking to her, touching her, or offering her treats, she will not eat in this situation, she will not engage with us or toys. So what do we do?
Positive Punishment (one of 4 quadrants in operant conditioning) is a scary word for some people, but in a case like this is necessary for this dog to be snapped out of her fixation, and be open to hearing and seeing us start teaching her there is another way. Punishment will NOT be the solution as suppression does not fix or change behaviour, but in this life or death situation for this dog it has to be what comes first in order for us to be able to show her another way.

Puppy training should be fun! Filled with lots of movement, play, and upbeat voices and praise! Puppy sessions should also be short so they always stay fun, and never get boring/feel like work if the puppies brain fades and gets tired. But, you can do multiple short sessions a day !
