Did you know that working your dog all day long isn’t actually helping them relax?

While each dog does require a different amount of activity to fulfill them, even high energy dogs need to learn how to not just lay down but truly settle and relax.

A dog that is constantly on edge and just looking for their next adrenaline fix isn’t practicing a good mind state when they lay down because they are so physically exhausted they can’t continue.

Learn how to help your dog decompress in different scenarios and gain more emotional control through settling.

04/24/2024

In dog training, a treat ladder also referred to as a treat hierarchy refers to the ranking or order of treats based on their value to YOUR dog.

🥇HIGH VALUE treats, such as small pieces of cooked meat or cheese, are often at the top of the hierarchy because they are typically the most enticing and motivating for dogs. We often use these for teaching new or challenging behaviors or for rewarding exceptional performance.

🥈LOWER VALUE treats, such as commercial/“regular” dog treats or kibble, are lower on the hierarchy and are used for reinforcing known behaviors or for less demanding training situations.

By using a treat hierarchy, we can all more effectively reward and motivate our dogs based on the level of difficulty or importance of the behavior at hand.

The only one who can decide the order in the hierarchy is YOUR dog. They are the ones who decide what they are willing to work for. The best way to ask your dog is through experimentation with trial and error.

What happens when your dog knows some of the skills being taught in class?

First off, that’s awesome!
That is great that you have taken initiative and taught your dog different skills and worked hard at it.

What can we do?
Take it to the next level. Advance the skill and add different challenges. Class is also a great place to allow you to work through distractions and in new environments.

What is taught?
We teach more than just skill sets. We teach communication, how to read body language, how to problem and see behavioural change, how to build a confident, independent and friendly dog.

Join Working Wolf Dog Training at the Dog Rink to learn something new while unlocking different levels of challenges and fun!

Did you know???? Dogs have their own musical preferences!? While they might not be requesting a Spotify playlist, research shows that certain genres resonate with our furry friends. Here are some fun facts about dog music:

• Soft Rock Serenades
Dogs seem to groove to soft rock tunes! When researchers played soft rock music to kenneled dogs, it had a calming effect and reduced stress levels.

• Reggae Rhythms
Turns out, dogs are low-key reggae fans! The laid-back vibes of reggae tunes also help soothe our canine companions. Picture your dog swaying to Bob Marley—maybe they’re dreaming of sunny beaches and palm trees.

• Classical Canine Compositions
Classical music is like a spa day for dogs. It can ease stress and even comfort sick pups. Whether your dog prefers Bach or Beethoven, a little Mozart might be their secret remedy.

Next time you put on some music, think of what your dog would like. It’s just one more thing you and your dog can bond over.

It’s getting closer!! Easter is just a day away! This is a friendly reminder to be aware of any and all of your Easter treats and where they are in relation to your dog.

Ensure that things like chocolate are all stored out of reach to keep your dog safe and healthy. Note that the higher percentage the chocolate the more toxic it is for them. Just because your dog never counter surfs doesn’t mean you should leave any temptations out. It is never worth the risk.
