The heart-worm parasite. A serious parasite whose infection can result in severe lung disease, heart failure, other organ damage, and death. When a infected mosquito bites your dog or cat the parasite will travel to your pets heart to develop and multiply.

The lifespan of heart-worm inside a host is 5 to 7 years and the adult heart-worms look like strands of cooked spaghetti. The number of worms living inside an infected dog is called the worm burden. The average worm burden in dogs is 15 worms, but that number can easily range from 1 to 250 worms.

Unfortunately, heart-worm treatment is difficult and costly. The best treatment is prevention. Heart-worm preventatives do not kill adult heart-worms and giving a heart-worm preventive to a dog infected with adult heart-worms may be harmful or deadly. That is why annual testing of all pets on heart-worm prevention is recommended. Call us and ask about the best time for your dog’s annual heart-worm test.
