Working with small dog breeds can be challenging, but it's a labor of love for me. While some groomers might find it easier to handle larger dogs, I find joy in the unique personalities of small breeds. They're like little children, with their quirks and charm, and they fill my heart with positivity. With my own Chihuahuas at home, small breeds have become my passion.

Each grooming session is a carefully tailored experience, considering the individual needs of every dog. I often receive requests from concerned pet owners asking to trim their dog's hair very short during the summer months, believing it's the best way to keep them cool. While I understand the intention behind these requests, it's essential to consider the potential risks and drawbacks of such a decision, especially when it comes to your dog's health and well-being.

First and foremost, many dog breeds have coats that provide natural protection against the sun's rays and help regulate their body temperature. Breeds like Shih Tzus, Poodles and Bichons may seem like they'd benefit from a close shave to beat the heat, but in reality, their coats serve a vital purpose. The longer guard hairs shield their skin from direct sunlight, insect bites, and even scratches, while the undercoat acts as insulation, keeping them cool in summer and warm in winter.
When we trim their hair too short, we inadvertently strip away this protective layer, leaving them vulnerable to sunburns, heatstroke and other summer-related hazards. Without their natural defenses, dogs can quickly become overheated and uncomfortable, putting their health at risk.
Instead of opting for a drastic shave, consider a stylish trim that maintains their coat's integrity while still providing some relief from the heat. Regular brushing can also help remove loose fur and improve airflow, keeping them cool and comfortable without sacrificing their natural defenses.
